Please talk to me about options for over-bath shower screens/ curtains blinds. What should I get?

Am just trying to decide between keeping the old shower curtain, which gets pulled down about once every 18 months (teenagers) and getting a glass one. I had a glass one years ago but it always looked minging no matter how much I tried to clean it - jsut could not get rid of water stains, limescale etc. But I hear there is more modern glass which has some sort of coating on it now so much easier to clean. Is this true, or do you have to pay a fortune for such a thing?

Also I have just discovered that overbath blinds exist, which sound good and far cheaper than a glass screen, but does anyone have one and are they good?

And are there any other options? I know there's something called outasight but it costs over £300 so am absolutely not interested.

I've had both screens and curtains and I have to say I prefer a curtain. I just replace them regularly so they don't get horrid and buy cheap ones - usually the hook less ones from primark or poundstretcher for about £5. I'd tell your teens if they pull it down or break it you'll deduct the cost from any pocket money!

I out my curtain in the washing machine with a squirt of bleach every few months and it always comes up fine :)

I don't mind shower curtains, it's jsut the rail will keep falling down, I don't know what we do to it

Ugh I hate it when the cold curtain sticks onto my skin. Screens for sure. We keep a squeegee thing stuck onto our one and just wipe down after shower. We also use viakel weekly during the deep clean, sponge around the screen, rinse and it's lovely again (esp if you then squeegee and wipe over with a microfibre cloth). Easy and looks great

Does anyone have a bath blind? It looks as though they're a new thing and I'm not sure how good they would be

the cheapest one is £50 but I'd rather pay £100 for a proper screen if they don't work

I used to have a curtain but I think that it made the bathroom smell damp. At the time we only had one shower and with four of us using it it always seemed to be wet, you have to leave it open to dry out and so the bathroom never looked tidy to me. We bought a screen that folds back on itself, it's in five panels. It looks much smarter and is so easy to keep clean. We all spray the 'after shower' spray after each shower and it dries to a streak free finish. Our screen wasn't expensive, about £60, it will last for years so probably works out cheaper than forking out for curtains a few times a year when they get discoloured or mouldy.

Where did you get your screen DD? £60 sounds really cheap for a folding one

The cheapest one I've seen is this:

Our one was from Homebase, granted not the cheapest place to look but I remember it being a bargain compared to others we had seen on line.

Anonynonny · 07/02/2015 11:20

Right, off to search the Homebase website

Blimey, they don't cost that anymore Shock

Well it was a few years back but I didn't think that the price would have gone up that much. Hope you manage to find one you like that doesn't cost a second mortgage Grin

We have a curtain at the moment but have been thinking about a screen and I like the folding four-panel one - will look into that!

nothingwittyhere · 12/02/2015 14:14

You can get a mini screen which you combine with a curtain. I've got this and I think it's the best of both worlds. It's part of the shower rail and strengthens that by giving it more support. It stops water leaking and seems to stop the curtain wrapping itself around you. It's fixed and small so easy to clean.

SolomanDaisy · 12/02/2015 14:17

A screen definitely. The easy way to keep them clean is with a microfibre cloth.

nothingwittyhere · 12/02/2015 14:30

My mini screen is this one: www.ideal-standard.co.uk/product-details/shower-guard-with-corner-pole/l8406.html

I have the shower curtain rail with mini screen and really like it. My previous glass screen didn't keep all the water in. I much prefer the curtain with mini glass screen. I got it from John Lewis.

Fadingmemory · 13/02/2015 18:00

I have a plain, glass screen. It gets "squeegeed" with a device I bought in John Lewis virtually every time I use it. It is then rubbed down with a microfibre e-cloth (also available in Johnny Lulu). I can only manage this because I work part-time and don't have children in the house most of the time. Until you can do that, just buy shower curtains and replace them regularly.(Plain glass screens from about 45 earth pounds plus fitting unless you are handy with a screwdriver and drill)
