How do you clean your floors?

Just that really. Not including carpets, how do you do the regular cleaning of your floors?

Do you hoover or sweep?

Steam mop? Normal mop? E-mop? No mop?

How often? Sweep daily and weekly mop? Weekly sweep and monthly mop? Spot clean only?

Ive had a steam cleaner but it broke a while ago and ive not replaced it. Before DS was born I just used to use one of those microfibre mops and squirt a bit of diluted stardrops on the floor, swish round and that seemed to suffice. Proper mop with fairy and bleach every now and then. Then I got the steam mop and got a bit obsessed with it. Then it broke and I never replaced it because im lazy and the floors are a bit neglected these days and although im not so fussed now DS isn't crawling anymore, I need to reinstate a better floor cleaning routine.

I think I'm a bit lazy with floors (excuse: pregnant with toddler; before that excuse: non sleeping baby; before that excuse: no time! Haha)

However, we have a mix of oak and stone.

Front room: Hoover rug every couple of days; once in a bye moon / if there's a big mess or dog poo on the buggy: wipe oak boards with very dilute all purpose cleaner and e-cloth followed by deep clean e-mop and method almond floor cleaner.

Kitchen and bathroom (uneven stone tiles): Hoover a couple of times a week. Wipe up spills with e-cloth and very dilute all purpose cleaner or washing up liquid. Swish cloth or wipes around bathroom floor. Deep clean both floors once a month-ish with very very dilute thin bleach and scrubbing brush. Wipe with clean water. Or steam mop. I don't find my steam mop does a great job. It's ok if the floors relatively clean though. I've just bought a string e mop for the bathroom and kitchen and intend to use to 2 buckets - one clean water and one with detergent. Apparantly string mops are better for uneven surfaces. Hopefully this is less intensive than scrubbing and I'll be more inclined to keep on top of the floors (which are minging at the moment) and haven't been deep cleaned since new year Blush

Upstairs: oak laminate - Hoover once a week-ish and wipes up spills with e-cloth. I've never mopped. They don't need it though.

I'd love to hear if anyone has used the method lemon floor cleaner as I might switch to this in the kitchen / bathroom when I've used up all of my ecover all purpose (which I only use for floors)

In non carpet areas we vacuum and then follow with method squirt and mop, wiped away with a microfibre mop- the heads get bunged in the washing machine after use. We don't wear shoes in the house though and any spills get wiped away immediately so don't get a chance to dry on or stain so floors really aren't that bad. They get done every week.

WittgensteinsBunny · 04/02/2015 12:17

wings are you using the lemon or the almond? Are your non carpet floors tiles or wood/laminate?

fuxache · 04/02/2015 12:25

I ignore the filth until it gets so bad that DH mops it! Easy peasy!

BauerTime · 04/02/2015 12:37

Witt that doesn't sound lazy at all!

All of our hard floor is downstairs (minus the bathroom) and shoes do get worn around the house so we do need to mop I think. I try to clear up all of toddler DS's food after each meal time but I can not shake the thought that the whole floor needs to be cleaned routinely.

I can drive myself crazy trying to work out how often it SHOULD be done so just wondered what other people do to try and normalise it.

•The best non-toxic floor cleaning solution is ¼ of a cup of mild liquid dishwashing detergent added to a bucket of warm water (for damp mopping).
• For scuff marks use a sprinkle of baking soda on a damp sponge and rub.

GraysAnalogy · 04/02/2015 12:54

We have one of those Vax hoovers that does a wet hoover too so usually use that.

Kitchen and bathroom though i like getting on my hands and knees and scrubbing.

FoxyMcFox · 04/02/2015 12:55

Mix of vinyl, laminate and carpet here.

All vacuumed three times a week plus sweep laminate whenever it needs it.

Steam mop vinyl and laminate once a week or maybe twice if we have visitors.

JuniperTisane · 04/02/2015 13:02

I sweep various parts of the vinyl kitchen & utility floor several times a day (preschoolers and animals) and use a spray mop all over every other day, spot cleaning with it under the table after dinner. Occasionally I have cause to scrub with a brush and some hot soapy water but nothing heavy.

Carpets get hoovered when DH remembers I remember, probably once a week.

atticusclaw · 04/02/2015 13:05

I use the method cleaner too (oak parquet) but am finding that it is less effective than it used to be. It used to clean so effectively that the floors became a bit slippery. Now it struggles to clean. I'm guessing they've changed the product which is annoying. Its also less almondy than it used to be (which is a silly move by them since thats the main reason I buy it).

WipsGlitter · 04/02/2015 13:52

I hoover once a week. I should mop more often but I cannot find one that I think makes the tiles look really clean (stone tiles). I have a steam mop - total waste of money, rarely use it. I scrub about once a year, that makes the most difference.

woolyflyer · 04/02/2015 13:59

Regular cleaning with dilute flash once a month a bleach clean with microfibres cloth - limestone floor

CremeEggThief · 04/02/2015 22:29

I use a sponge mop in a bucket of hot water and washing - up liquid, with a splash of bleach, on my vinyl once a fortnight week. Shoes off and no pets, so happy with that.

WingsClipped · 04/02/2015 22:34

We use the lemony one and it is on tiled flooring.

WittgensteinsBunny · 06/02/2015 13:39

Thanks wings.

On a very boring note, my string e-mop turned up yesterday and my bathroom tiles are cleaner than they've ever been! It's amazing! I just need to get a bucket with a wringer as I had to squeeze the mop by hand but I can't beleive how clean it got the tiles and with just a squirt if washing up liquid too.

The only thing it didn't do was get the grout super clean. But I think it needs bleaching and I think I'll have to do it with a small brush / cloth. Anyone got any tips?

can you tell that I'm 34 weeks pregnnat and nesting like no-ones business!! Grin

jazzandh · 06/02/2015 15:02

I hoover quickly most days (pale tiled floor that shows every hair and crumb) and run the emop over it every couple of days. Several heads that are used once and put in wash. It only takes a few minutes and keeps on top of it better.

Have a hand held hoover for quick crumbs, and use dettol floor squirty stuff and kitchen roll for quick spills.

Upstairs, I have wood, and I hoover, but occasionally use HG wooden floor cleaner with emop and it gives it a polish.

GoooRooo · 06/02/2015 15:08

We have laminate in our lounge (because we couldn't afford the real hardwood and I have a toddler, a dog and 2 cats and couldn't bear smelly carpets) and tiles in our hall and kitchen. We hoover (or sweep with a broom if I'm doing it quickly) then mop with an old fashioned mop and bucket. I use biological washing powder - it's brilliant. It gets the floors sparkly clean and the whole house smells like clean laundry.

Eastwickwitch · 06/02/2015 17:02

Silly question about emops (the ones with a flat surface)..can is use a tiny bit of floor cleaner or should it just be water?
Having moved away from a Vileda mop & bucket i'm confused.

Lulu3108 · 06/02/2015 18:34

Hoover.

Hands on knees.. Cloth. Best way.

Jbop · 07/02/2015 09:19

I do exactly what Wings does, except I use a bit of v hot water with my method cleaner.

WestEast · 07/02/2015 09:24

We have laminate, tiles and lino in our flat. Hoovered twice a week, steam mopped once a week.
