What is it please? I don't want to have to worry about marks or stains, be able to put something hot directly onto it, no maintenance etc.

I have not seen a zinc worktop for many years.

I think you have to accept that it will look grey and dull, so even if it is hygenically clean it will not look bright and shiny.

I would probably just sponge it clean with WUL, and possibly polish it with half a drop of cooking oil on a rag. I think the surface will be damaged by acid such as tomato juice or limescale cleaners.

I too am looking forward to seeing the slate worktop, MycleanArse. Is it tiles or large pieces?? I can't get past an image of roofing in my head, but I think I could love large panels.

These are rather lovely! Not at all like slate roofs. They are made from green slate from the Honister slate mine in the Lakes (near me). Would love some of them!

Are any closer to answer the OP question?

I've been pondering this for a few weeks and my head hurts.

SS, beautiful patina Grin

This is a cheap hob inset that IKEA used to do, I wish I could have it for all the worktops in the new kitchen.
