ikea opening

I know I'm a bit sad but a new IKEA opened about 3 miles from my house today and very excited. Haven't been there yet as I'm not in a rioting mood today. The nearest IKEA to me has always been too far for me to be really bothered. Where we are we shouldnt be affected by traffic. However they have built it in the MIDDLE of a town which is complete madness as very near by there is a large retail type estate with loads of empty land just off a m'way junction! anyhoo wondered if anyone could recommend any great purchases from said superstore-I'm always on the lookout for storage ideas.

Oh. which town? I have to go miles to get to an Ikea.

janebracelet · 19/10/2006 14:01

Ashton under lyne nr Manchester.I have a sneaking supicion it is going to be traffic hell because of location - even worse than usual IKEA traffic.I might have to walk there - now picturing myself walking home with flat pack wardrobe on back!

They've got some really lovely cuddlies in our Ikea at the mo. really soft, huge elephants and hippos for £6.99, wqith big dopey eyes. I was so tempted, even though more cuddlies are the last thing we need in this house!

themoon666 · 19/10/2006 14:18

Ah.. nowhere near me. I'm half way between Nottingham one and the Leeds one.

janebracelet · 19/10/2006 14:22

oh sorry themoon666, still think of all the pennies you will save not going- I am anticipating many wasted hours and much wasted money in that place.

DD is after a tiger type cuddly at the mo so will have a look. The few times I have been I have found it very sedcutive-not the big stuff like furniture, but all the 'bits' that you didnt even know existed.

janebracelet · 19/10/2006 14:36

I will look at bunk beds for you hotandbothered but now feel sorry for the IKEA-less masses and will not rub in it any further.

Ashton is about 15 mins nearer to us than Warrington but Warrington is easier to get to and that takes around 3 hours!
We are going on friday on the way home from holiday

paddingtonbear1 · 21/10/2006 22:58

ah didn't realise the new ikea was open! we live near Stockport so that will be our nearest. must pay a visit sometime soon, let the crowds die down first.
nikkie you will be doing a lot of shopping on the way to/from your holiday!

Visited Ikea on Friday -it wasnt too bad for traffic but inside it was sooooo busy -everyone was shuffling along at snails pace and I only wanted a quick glance round.By the time I was in the marketplace I was having a panic attack -had a jumper on that was too hot,was carrying too much stuff, couldnt get past anyone and then couldnt find way to the tills -started getting really sweaty and wanted to scream -dumped half the stuff I had picked up and pegged it to the tills!Next time I will go on a Tuesady morning or something similar-someone at work said it was open until midnight which might be a good time as well.

I am sooooo

cupsnakes · 23/10/2006 14:35

sounds like the usual Ikea experience.
We are travelling to the newish one at Milton Keynes in a couple of weeks. On a Saturday .
At least we are going without the children.
I always get the overheated panic attack thing.

Jbck · 24/10/2006 18:37

DD loves 'Smal-land or whatever creche is in Swedish [grin. Sometimes she begs me to take her & I just have to oblige.

catkins1000 · 24/10/2006 22:39

We've just been to the new A-U-L Ikea tonight and it was ok - lots of traffic management/police/people waving you on etc in place which made me think it'd be dead busy but it was ok - we went about 7.30pm.
Still have to walk around the whole shop though even if you only go for a cushion or something. I needed a lie down when we got home. And you get too hot. But it is good and cheap for certain things....
Oh and it is def open til midnight!

NOMurDErousPLUME · 24/10/2006 22:41

My oldest friend lives in Ashton... I'll tell her about Ikea. I'm sure she'll be thrilled

PretendFriend · 24/10/2006 22:42

DH happened to be in AuL this morning and rang me as he was leaving, so I asked if he'd spotted the new IKEA; he said, in the usual dozy male way, "what new IKEA?"

He rang back about 2 mins later to say he'd been alongside a huge blue and yellow building while he was talking to me and hadn't twigged

NOMurDErousPLUME · 24/10/2006 22:42

(We grew up together just down the road in Droylsden)

PretendFriend · 24/10/2006 22:43

(I think she might know already, Ndp )

NOMurDErousPLUME · 24/10/2006 22:45

She has been in the US for a few months. Although I'm sure she'll have seen the building works and banners .
