It's plastic rather than metal and the water tastes disgusting. Real plastic taste to it.

We've boiled it for days and chucked the water. Also had bicarbonate of soda in it, both while boiling and then left standing. It's made no difference.

Oh, I was going to suggest plenty of boiling sessions, but see you've already done this... I assume you've been filling to maximum capacity?

We are having to take a gorgeous Russell Hobbs kettle back for the same reason. I've looked it up on line and apparently the chlorine in your water reacts with something in the kettle. In our case it tastes of bleach/TCP. I'm gutted as I love the style of the kettle and it was expensive. This has never happened with cheaper kettles in the past.

I wanted to buy DM a kettle, but when I read the reviews of lots of kettles, they said that they made the water taste funny! You'd think that would have become apparent during testing. I never did buy DM a kettle; it was too stressful Grin.

Do you have any coca cola in the house? Pour a couple of cans in up to the maximum level and then leave to stand overnight. In the morning rinse out completely and then boil a kettle of water. It should be OK.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/01/2015 20:37

Yes, tcp taste. That describes it better!

I can't take it back. Got it from Amazon and have chucked the box.

Will get some coke and try that, thanks.

I did notice a couple of reviews which said about the bad taste but thought they must be imagining it as the other 95% of reviews didn't mention it. Dh reckons they must all be coffee drinkers and not notice it but I don't even think coffee would hide the taste.

Fwiw amazon have always been fab with refunds when I've had faulty products. In my experience if you complain that it is a fault (which it is) they take your word for it and refund you, and tell you not to return it

I have/will only but metal kettles for this reason. At the moment I have a glass one and it's great as its completely glass, so picks up no taste. Not very helpful, but I can't suggest anything. Suppose it does depend on your water, also in luck there too, water here comes from the Lake District.

Does anyone know where Voche appliances are manufactured, esp Voche kettles?

I just googled nasty tasting kettle water. This thread came up. I've just bought a metal Russel Hobbs kettle. It was ok for a week, then dh made a cup of tea that tasted really horrible. So I washed the kettle out and made another. It was fine. A few days later and the nasty taste is back. This morn. I poured some kettle water in a mug and left it to cool. Then tasted it....disgusting. Dh spat it out it was that bad. I'm currently soaking the kettle in bicarb. Disappointed 😞
