Why does my fridge freeze everything ?

Just that, really. I have turned it down - 4 to 1 - and defrosted it, but everything inside is still freezing solid. Not good for yogurt!

Maybe 1 is colder and 4 is warmer? I always presume the numbers on my fridge are degrees.

My fridge goes up to 7. 7 is very, very cold (too cold) but not frozen! I keep it between 5 and 6. But it is nearly 20 years old - so not sure how well it actually works.

This happened to ours! It turned out to be a part that needed to be replaced...I want to say it was a transformer?....aarrghhh, I can't remember the name of it, sorry.

But we managed to find the part for about 60 quid on ebay, dh fitted it (was easy to slot in) and saved us having to buy a new fridge.

I have a feeling you have the same problem, ours was freezing everything on the lowest setting and totally iced up at the back.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 22/01/2015 20:35

Cuddles, how did you find out that the part needed changing?

Have you checked the door seals and the little guttering hole at the back for blockages?
Check drip tray also.
If these are all clear there might be a problem with the thermostat controls.

Because its a fridge-freezer??!

StrikesMatches · 22/01/2015 21:29

Mine does this too, and I've worked out that it is more likely to freeze things when it is around or less than half full. The most likely victims are usually in the veg drawers or anything that is touching a wall. I would love a new one, but can't justify it until I knock my walls and get a whole new downstairs... It's to do with air circulation in the fridge (as I understand it!) so if fridge is overfull (so air can't circulate inside), or just a bit of a crap fridge, then the circulation is not efficient enough to ensure even temps throughout. When I had a cheap brand fridge in the past, this was a constant issue from new. Now that I have a v v good quality one, which has some special tech to ensure even circulation throughout, it is no longer a problem. (But I spent loads on it). There may be a part that's malfunctioning causing the temp issues.

It's really really soul destroying to keep having to throw out what should be perfectly good veg etc, because it's frost bitten, I feel your pain as I have been there

Luckily a friend of dh works in that area, so we were lucky enough to have him come round and diagnose the problem.

It could well be the problems that the other posters have suggested, but when you said that it still freezes even when turned down to 1 it sounded so familiar to me.

CuddlesAndShit · 23/01/2015 07:53

Also, I think the faulty part was a thermostat (thanks Blue for reminding me of the word! Grin)

Is anything touching the back inside wall of the fridge? That can make some fridges freeze the contents.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 23/01/2015 20:11

Will check how full the fridge is, if anything is touching the back and the little drainage hole ... Of which I have never heard ...

Is it old? They usually do that just before they die.
