The Book: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, Cathy Hirano

Summary of the process link from mipmop

Article of top tips by Marie Kondo

Thread 5
Thread 4
Thread 3
Thread 2
Thread 1

And BeCool's copy of Coughles list of ORDER from Thread 2 for everyone:

"ORDER TO DECLUTTER/LOCATE THE JOY*

Clothes folding by rummy
Books
Papers
CDs
DVDs
Skincare products
Make-up
Accessories
Valuables (passports, credit cards, etc.)
Electrical equipment and appliances (digital cameras, electric cords, anything that seems vaguely ‘electric’)
Household equipment (stationery and writing materials, sewing kits, etc.)
Household supplies (expendables like medicine, detergents, tissues, etc.)
Kitchen goods/ food supplies
Other (If you have many items related to a particular interest or hobby, such as ski equipment, then treat these as a single subcategory.)

KonMari stresses that sentimental items should be left till the end. So for example, when you are doing papers, don't include photos of your children, love letters, old school reports etc, leave anything with a sentimental connection for later."

*As discussed in previous threads, your order for decluttering and finding the joy/spark/recognizing may be different to recommendations.

hello all :) finally moved onto papers (finding it hard to get time to sort) what do you think I should do with old good food magazines? they are lovely to look at but all recipes are online aren't they? and I've never actually looked at a back copy... feeling bad as it's a subscription from my mum but they are read as soon as they arrive!

BrandNewIggi · 31/01/2015 16:14

Weasel you could free cycle them - there might be someone who's had to move or is learning to cook who would live them.

LinzerTorte · 31/01/2015 16:25

Dragonflies MK gives the dictionary definition of komono as "small articles, miscellaneous items, accessories, gadgets or small tools [etc.]" - basically, all the stuff/bits and pieces/clutter you have lying around that doesn't really fit into any other category.

Accessories and valuables done; on to electrical equipment now. I think this category may take a while; we have so many leads, cables and chargers from years back and I'm not sure what half of them belong to.

weaselwithin · 31/01/2015 16:35

thanks @brandnew (how do you do bold?!) another thing, do I sort pencils, pens etc along with papers? or maybe komono?? as a teacher my friends laugh whenever they come over - we played a board game and they were astonished at how many pens I have! I didn't realise it was so unusual!!

BrandNewIggi · 31/01/2015 16:57

You don't need all those pencils though do you, you just need a selection of ones that work, in a place where you can get at them easily. Bring the rest into work for the children to steal borrow.

BrandNewIggi · 31/01/2015 16:58

... Bold is word but without the spaces.

HermioneGrangerHair · 31/01/2015 17:55

Weasel, in this house, pens and pencils deserve a postcode category all of their own!

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 31/01/2015 17:56

Just keeping on top of incoming stuff atm, too busy at work for anything else. Moved two huge IKEA stools from kitchen out to garage and am loving the space.

I haven't had any time to Kondo either but I second the idea of putting all the komono together to sort, that is why my spare room which was almost empty before Xmas now looks like a jumble sale! Hopefully DH is putting up a shelf near the computer tomorrow for all my school stuff so that will get some of it tidied.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 31/01/2015 19:14

ohhelp that's adorable Smile

Today 2 bin bags of clothes; one bag of komono and 2 outgrown bikes left our house - woohoo!

Zippidydoodah · 31/01/2015 20:04

Hi everyone! Aw bless your Ds, oh help!

I have done my baby's clothes, woop! I have a box to give away to family, a bin bag to charity, a bin bag half full of rubbish (nappy packets etc) and a little basket of stuff that I am going to wash and keep! Tops, pjs, leggings are all folded and rolled! Wonder how long they'll stay like that?!

TimeGoesBy · 31/01/2015 20:25

ohhelp that's beyond cute!
anzu I know thread has moved on but with dryer not drying clothes enough, this used to happen to me too but I give the clothes an extra spin in washing machine first and get really dry, much faster... A mumsnet tip from before.... I sometimes feel like this website is teaching me how to be a grown up!!
weasel with things like pens I treated them as there own category and did them when I needed an 'easy win', on the days when wanted to keep up Kondo momentum but couldn't face anything too challenging.
Happy weekend everyone. Kondoing some wine tonightGrin

I had a amazingly busy Saturday with the family, brunch, walk in the forest, bought 5 chickens at the local auction house (!), set up a new hutch for our rabbit, several loads of washing, bought a new blender as the old one broke (a Magimix, love it! Already have a Magimix food processor, it's like it's less lonely now)), cooking, washing up by hand FOR 1 1/2 HOURS as dishwasher is still waiting for a part, bed time story, took the dog out and have just finished a bit of work - the amazing thing is, although I am absolutely shattered, the house is not a complete tip! This kondoing really is working!

All my discarded summer clothes is still on my bedroom floor - but it's not in my wardrobe ;) I am learning to look at the positives ...

ItIsntJustAPhase · 31/01/2015 22:32

Does anyone remember the end of Labyrinth, when she looks around her room and says, 'It's all just junk!'?

I feel a bit like that when I look around my house now. Not all of it, obviously, but I feel like there is so much more to life than managing all the bits, and dealing with all the stuff.

I want to live life, not wallow in the energy of old objects from a past time. I can have confidence that life holds a lot for me in the future, although I don't know exactly what. I just need to get my house in order and then, who knows? Grin

My Lakeland shoe racks had arrived so I was in the middle of sorting the cupboard under the stairs (shoe and coat storage area) when the book arrived! Have not been able to read it yet and I have shoes and coats everywhere. It has started - can't wait for the journey with you all.

LinzerTorte · 01/02/2015 05:06

bring I treated hair products as a separate category and did them in between skincare and make-up (but I think they're more skincare than make-up). For accessories, I (re)did scarves, bags and jewellery.

HermioneGrangerHair · 01/02/2015 08:15

Exactly what Linzer says about shampoo and accessories. In the end, I dealt with quite a few subcategories under "toiletries":

Skin care
Hair care
First aid
Medicines
Makeup
