The Book: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo, Cathy Hirano

Summary of the process link from mipmop

Article of top tips by Marie Kondo

Thread 5
Thread 4
Thread 3
Thread 2
Thread 1

And BeCool's copy of Coughles list of ORDER from Thread 2 for everyone:

"ORDER TO DECLUTTER/LOCATE THE JOY*

Clothes folding by rummy
Books
Papers
CDs
DVDs
Skincare products
Make-up
Accessories
Valuables (passports, credit cards, etc.)
Electrical equipment and appliances (digital cameras, electric cords, anything that seems vaguely ‘electric’)
Household equipment (stationery and writing materials, sewing kits, etc.)
Household supplies (expendables like medicine, detergents, tissues, etc.)
Kitchen goods/ food supplies
Other (If you have many items related to a particular interest or hobby, such as ski equipment, then treat these as a single subcategory.)

KonMari stresses that sentimental items should be left till the end. So for example, when you are doing papers, don't include photos of your children, love letters, old school reports etc, leave anything with a sentimental connection for later."

*As discussed in previous threads, your order for decluttering and finding the joy/spark/recognizing may be different to recommendations.

Thanks for the thread, and all the marvellous links.

Have just realised that I've basically already done books, and they're well arranged and happy, so next step is papers. Ugh. Suspect there will be much procrastination, but I also definitely cannot do them when the babies are around so this is going to be the worst one for me.

I know, though, that I will be extremely pleased when it's done.

I think I last post d on thread 3!

Came to a halt when we started putting out the xmas decs etc.

Now I have no excuse.

Although I am not really following the MK prescribed path.

Can I jump back in but go at it my way sort of?

Today's job is to clear a cupboard in the hall where the overflow xmas stuff goes. It's still all over the dining room. Blush

Cider and lina, keep reading, it will get you started again!

Hoping to wipe the memory on my old pc and freegle it today + do a bit more in DSs room, but work is getting in the way ;)

I am sleeping great, and I think it's related to Kondoing. I don't sleep well when I am stressed, and it got quite bad before Christmas. I have started using Evernote and making lists so that I don't try to keep lists in my head. I think it works!

Thank you for the new thread :)

Just popped in to say that I decided that I should take out all the toiletries that I was given for Christmas/ birthday from their packaging, I am now going to try and fit them in the cupboard. There is way too much so I might give some more away.
I keep on thinking that I am almost finished when another job pops into my head, I just did the sewing drawers, which I had forgotten about. I have donated some lace that my grandmother bought for me as although I have kept it for about 20 years or more and I like it, but I will never use it ,so the kondo method really helped me let go. I like the idea of somebody really loving it and using it.

Maybe we sub consciously forget about the categories we least want to do, I don't know but at least that is one less to do.

Ooh another shiny new thread Thanks
Don't know why exactly but I've been feeling shy about posting my latest kondoing but here goes, yesterday I finished the spare room of doom (not in order I know but needing reclaiming following Xmas and my craft area kondo) didn't actually get rid of much more but reorganised the wardrobe where we keep out of season duvets, snow/ski gear, my big bag of sewing fabric etc so everything that's used most is accessible like the foot spa which me and dd love but rarely used as it was on the top shelf, it's now low down so we can use it more often Smile
Kondoed a lot of my dad's paperwork which has made the stuff I need/want to keep fit much more happily in the file and I put his small collection of personal possessions in a nice smart box we had at Christmas, which for reasons I can't really explain, makes me feel happier. I looked at the stuff and toyed with getting rid of a few bits but am not ready, I'll maybe look at that again when I am officially at the sentimental items stage, but in the meantime they are nicely stored on the top shelf for when I want to look at them. I must say I have been into the spare room several times already today just to admire it and say to myself, this whole room is done!! Aaaah! Have also spent some time sewing today just for fun so something about this is really magic!

Temporary link to photo of fridge magnet collection: expirebox.com/download/3128c608e796efaab8a0fddec7e16662.html

Was about to put these in the chazza box but found myself reluctant. Will have to put them back and wait until I do the sentimental stuff I guess.

Tell me they're just a bunch of souvenirs and I don't need them to prove that I used to travel a lot before I had kids and my life as I knew it ended.

I've been thinking about getting rid of them for ages, but when I actually dug them out to take a look I thought nooooooo!

Did find a heap more stuff for tomorrow's collection though, including my Harry Potters which for some reason I was saving for the kids to read someday. If they want to read them in 4 years' time (earliest realistic possibility), I will buy new copies. They're not exactly hard to find. The books themselves were a present, but I don't have any particular sentimental attachment to those particular copies. Just remembering that I was given them is enough.

I did the gloves drawer and then took ten pairs of children's gloves to a local refuge. I am about to start on the children's clothes that no longer fit.

RandomFriend Grin You just reminded me... I kondoed my 4 pairs of gloves, sort of, when I did my sock drawer. I moved gloves to the unkondoed scarf drawer. Then the freeze came and I couldn't for the life of me find my fingerless mitts! Blush

Steptoe, are you sure you want to get rid of your Harry Potters? We kept ours, and DH has now read them all to the kids, and they loved that he was reading the copy that he read to them. DH also kept all his Terry Pratchet novels, and DD age 10 read the ones for children.

I returned 4 unread books to the library today. I took them out before Christmas, but still haven't started any of them and keep renewing them. Really happy they are not staring at me from my bedside table anymore!
