Vacuum cleaner recommendations please

Need a vacuum for downstairs suitable for carpet and wooden floor with attachments to do stairs, curtains etc. Current Vax upright seems to be on its way out. Power switch permanently on and brushes not turning. Any recommendations please. This one is about 3 years old and I seen to have a record for destroying them so is it worth paying a lot ?

If you prefer uprights, I would highly recommend the Sebo Felix Pet. The brushroll can be turned off for use on hard floors, but turned back on for carpets. Comes with a 5 year guarantee too.

If you prefer cylinders, look at the Miele C3 Cat & Dog. Very quiet, powerful and with all different attachments for different floors.

Both are bagged, but have a very higher filteration level and are made in Germany - far more reliable than anything bagless.

I came on to recommend sebo too.

"brushes not turning"

you have replaced the drive belt, haven't you?

LIZS · 14/01/2015 19:38

No haven't looked into it further yet as only realised this afternoon that it wasn't picking up. Will talk to dh whether he wants to try or replace.

I don't know Vax, but it usually takes some minutes to open the bottom and look at the belt. It might have fallen off the pulley, or broken, or (if the rollers have been jammed for some time) it may have been damaged by rubbing on the motor shaft.

Thanks I'll have a look later but I couldn't immediately see how to open it.

There should be screws on the underside of the vacuum that come out. Have a search online for the manual, that should explain how to do it

Henry. I've had several hoovers (and killed them) and nothing has come close to my Henry and his smiling face.

There's a reason cleaners use them!

rabbit123 · 17/01/2015 23:18

cleaners use Henry's because the replacement parts are so cheap

Trying to get the bottom off to access the brushbar as per support.vax.co.uk/power-vx-2-upright . However the screws are very deep seated and the 5th one is proving particularly tricky to get purchase on , any tips ? Suspect it is to make most think it easier to just buy another Hmm

is your screwdriver too fat or too short to go down the hole? Is it a precise fit in the screwheads you have managed?

ihatethecold · 21/01/2015 11:06

I have a Miele cat and dog and it's great.
It costed me about £150 a couple of years ago and I would recommend it.

Hexiegone · 21/01/2015 11:08

Sebo Felix for me too.

LIZS · 21/01/2015 11:10

The screwdrivers seem to fit , gave a thinner and fatter one but visibility is very limited as the screws are sited the full length of the metal head down tubes so may not be fully engaged.
