What's happening? The clothes absolutely stink when they've been washed to the point im not doing any more washing til it's fixed..

Everything I've googled says white vinegar bleach soda crystals etc..but the machine is only 2 weeks old so no mankiness yet anyway?

I'm now assuming it's a drain problem but I have no idea how to go about it...and how would dirty water get into the machine anyway as 1 pipe in and 1 pipe out? Any help/ideas/suggestions? Please??!!

It's definitely the drain, you need to ensure that the pipe behind the machine has a u bend, this stops the dirty water hanging about or going back up the waste pipe.

Does it smell just musty, or like actual foul water?

ToeFluff · 13/01/2015 16:38

Hmm I'm doing a self clean cycle atm but will pull it out after its finished, thank you for the tip! shouldn't the installation guy have said if there wasn't? Or not his job/problem?

It doesn't smell of sewage but it smells like a nasty but sweet musty smell..if that makes sense?

But really overpoweringly strong

Are you using liquid and/or washing at low temperatures exclusively? That can cause washing machines to smell and go mouldy. If so, try switch to powder and washing at 40 & 60 degrees, that should help.

No, his job's literally to connect the new washer. I'd say it's the drainage pipe too. It can fill the washing machine with stagnant, dirty water, hence your problems with laundry freshness!

I occasionally do mine with a cup of white vinegar on a rinse cycle, had my machine 13 years, it loosens the muck off inside and you have to clean that out but I would not expect anything after 2 weeks.
That said, water does linger in the pipes some how and there is usually a smell when something disturbs it but it hasnt effected the smell of the clothes.
Clean all the pipes out with bicarb, vinegar then hot water?
Caustic soda in drain if desperate, its what my landlord recommended to me once.

Boak.. Oh dear, sounds like I might need a plumber then? Hmm

I'm going to sound stupid.. How do I clean the pipes?!

I would go with cleaning the drainage pipe and other have mentioned check that there is a U bend. Sometimes as people route flexible cable under the worktop you don't get a true u-bend that traps the bad water.

AmantesSuntAmentes · 13/01/2015 18:34

It depends on the drainage system used, op. If it just sits in a down pipe, that pie should have a u bend which you can screw off and clean out. If it's attached directly to the drainage pipe (mine is), you'll have to unscrew the connector, screw the valve compartment loose and clean out whatever's blocking the valve (allowing free-flow back into the machine). It should be manageable but it will reek!! Oh and use a bucket to catch any nasty water!

your washer has a waste pipe, usually grey, convoluted plastic. It might go into a stand-pipe or it might connect to the trap of the sink. It should not connect direct to the soil stack.

You have to raise this waste hose in a loop, where the top of the loop is up against the underside of the worktop. if the waste hose does not rise higher than the highest water level in the sink, then, when you pull the sink plug out, dirty water, tea leaves, bacon fat and fish eyes will run down the hose into your washer.

First rule of drains is that water runs downhill.

Often, the waste hose can be made to rise by putting it through a very high hole in the side or back of the sink unit. If not, use a pair of cup hooks and some nylon cord, or look for a place to tie it up very high on the back of the machine.
