Ah, I love the thrifty cleaning tips that you get in 'womans own' etc so I thought we could start a list on here. My best tip is...

To remove pollen from anything use sellotape, just press down on the pollen and whip off....ta da!

another one is...

To remove water marks from wooden surfaces, clean with silver polish...weird but true (works on my indian wood chest of drawers a treat!)

Bicarbonate of soda. Best thing to keep in the house, good for cleaning the fridge when mixed with water, good for unblocking drains with some vinegar and a capful of bleach followed by a kettle of boiling water 1/2 an hour later, good for scrubbing things with when made into a paste, no nasty smells or fumes and great as a treatment for exzema or chicken pox.

microfibre cloths, they clean even the toghest stains with little or no harsh cleanser.

and dilute multi purpose cleaner to a very mild solution in and old spray bottlea dnuse this on the tougher stains or on surfaces where food will be prepared, it works just as well as a stronger solution but no need to rince, and the bottle will last forever so its money saving too.

and wd-40 for pencil or crayon on walls, another MNer suggested it and it works brilliantly.

keep your cleaning things where you use them. then when yuo see a bit of dust or a scuzzy bit behing the bathroom sink you can whip them out and do it there and then, rather than thinking must do that later, takes 1 minute and it gets done

Bleach for everything.

Pour it all over, leave and mumsnet for a few hours. When you go back everything will just wipe clean and look sparkling.

Lazy, moi?

Could do with a tip for how to get paint and spaghetti sauce stains out of clothes!

Ooh WD40 for cleaning slate too, a builder told me that. Darkens it up beautifully.

oooh good tips....
I read somewhere that if you put an apple in your bag of potatoes they keep fresh longer...haven't tried it yet but will be doing so soon.

scarymaryme · 14/10/2006 18:09

Oh yes and my all time favourite tip..
Lemons.....
Half a lemon in your dishwasher..makes the crocks sparkle,
Half a lemon in the fridge absorbs bad odours and keeps it smelling fresh,
And squeeze lemon juice into a cup of water and microwave on full for 2 mins.....helps the grease to dissolve so you can clean it easier

SpookyMadMummy · 14/10/2006 18:35

baby wipes are good for loads of things bar bottoms... Are regularly used here for crayon on the walls, chalkboards etc

Gingerbear · 14/10/2006 18:41

use a window squeedgee in the shower cubicle straight after a shower - no limescale marks when it dries.
Bicarb in fridge works better than lemon IMO.
vinegar for windows
bicarb/vinegar for smelly plugholes.
