how often do you open your windows to air your home?

We do most days upstairs, even if it's cold and wet, if only for 15 mins or so, but usually for longer I'm home a lot during the day and so can't help noticing how infrequently my neighbours open theirs. All our houses are the same with main and third bedrooms at the front so these are the neighbour's ones I see but I swear we're the only ones in our close of 20 or so houses who ever open the front windows. Even in summer, some neighbours windows stay closed. I'm clearly the odd one out where I live. What's it like where you are?

In summer quite a bit , this time of year not so much.
Always if I'm doing a big clean though to get rid of dust but otherwise I don't.
Our house isn't fusty nor does it suffer from condensation.
The bathrooms & kitchen have good fans, the other rooms all have chimneys/fireplaces. The tumble dryer is properly vented.
The house is well insulated but also has proper ventilation added as we renovated the house.

stardusty5 · 31/12/2014 13:08

I open the bedroom windows every day and prefer to sleep with them open unless i have to get up really early into a freezing cold bedroom! Usually have the back door open flowing all through the house several times a day which does the job for our small house!

Thinkingg about it, our bedroom is also at the back so my neighbours might never see and appreciate my airy ways.

Iggly · 31/12/2014 13:09

Bedrooms, daily. The kitchen, most days. Living room, every other day.

LeonardWentToTheOffice · 31/12/2014 13:11

Have recently woke up to realise I left DS's bedroom window open all night including when I went out for the night! Whoops - didn't mean to do that - and I'd left loads of lights on especially as paranoid about burglars at Christmas!

TheReluctantCountess · 31/12/2014 13:13

Everyday, for as long as possible. Even if we are out at work all day, the windows are open for half an hour before we leave an a couple of hours in the evening.

ToomuchIsBackOnBootcamp · 31/12/2014 13:19

Our and Ds bedroom window opened every morning, even if just for a few minutes when it's really cold (we are North scotland) just to change the air. Otherwise it smells of male/dog farts urrgh. Spare room and DH office done as needed, prob every few days. Only sleep with windows open when it's summer, as I feel the cold too much and can't sleep.

Downstairs, I usually open the kitchen window when cooking, and the living room window when hoovering, so that is daily too. Front and back doors open several times a day to let dog in/out so that helps air circulation too.

I also live on a modern estate with similar houses and notice not many people open their windows, at least not at the regular times I'm out (school run, dog walk, evening work). I wouldn't like that, I like the smell of an aired house.

TheQuibbler · 31/12/2014 13:22

My bedroom window is never fully closed. I cannot abide a warm bedroom (no heating, either).

All windows opened for at least 30 mins. Come rain or shine.

redcaryellowcar · 31/12/2014 13:25

I open ours every morning after we've showered until we get back from the nursery run. Our neighbour thinks something is wrong if our windows aren't opened? Dh doesn't seem so compelled to open them, but we have a new ish house which is a bit too well insulated so it starts to feel damp if we don't open them wide daily and leave then just a bit open most of the time! I was amazed when we moved here that the windows were painted shut, suggesting the people before us only opened the trickle vents??

HermioneGrangerHair · 31/12/2014 16:29

Well, I wouldn't judge my neighbours on their airing habits, because if they worked on the same principles as us, we'd never notice them opening the windows.

Bedroom and bathroom windows are open at least to a crack round the clock except when it's utterly baltic... Even then at least the bathroom window and spare room window open a crack to keep some airflow going. Bathroom window is open all the time we're at home. Kitchen window open whenever we're cooking. Open fires and bare floorboards ensure good air in the dining room and sitting room. I think having "low level" ventilation all the time means we don't need a daily routine of opening the windows, so perhaps our neighbours assume our house must be fusty, but they'd be wrong! And we have no trace of damp or mould .

usualsuspect333 · 31/12/2014 16:32

In the summer all the time, rarely in the winter except for the toilet and my bedroom window.

No way am I freezing my arse off with the living room window open.

Happynapi · 31/12/2014 17:06

Do air but only for an hour max if i am the only one in the house if others are home then 30 minutes max if that. Trouble is heating the house then feeling that very icy temperature makes me feel like i am burning money. How do you cope with windowsopen at night?

TwiggyHeart · 31/12/2014 17:13

Every day, I hate smells (bit obsessed with it) my MIL constantly tells me my house is freezing, it's not but hers is too hot and stuffy. Our tenanted flat never had mould but every tenant we have had has suffered with it, we suggested opening windows....they asked why!

financialwizard · 31/12/2014 17:17

4 days a week. The rest of the time we are out the house for most of the day.

IssyStark · 01/01/2015 14:46

Kitchen window is open all the time except when we're away on holiday (and opening it is the first thing I do on returning). Trickle vents are always open in every room and from spring onwards our and doc bedroom windows are always properly open (at the moment they are on the storm latch). Plus in winter on those cold but dry weekend days, I try to air the bedrooms and downstairs for half an hour at least.

BertieBotts · 01/01/2015 14:53

I've only ever heard of this on mumsnet. I don't like open windows, I like to be warm. DH opens them all the time though.

WineWineWine · 01/01/2015 14:55

Only if there is a reason for doing so, to cool down in summer or clear a smell or steam.
Why would I pay good money to heat my house, then let it escape out of the windows??

And I cannot imagine why anyone would even notice their neighbour's window opening habits!

mausmaus · 01/01/2015 14:58

we open all windows as far as they go at least 15 min a day.
can't stand stale houses and want to keep condensation at bay.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/01/2015 15:09

People who never open their windows probably don't notice how stale the air in their house is. There is a fusty fetid feel to an unaired house - MIL and FIL keep their windows permanently closed except in the bathroom., even in summer cos she's scared of flying insects. I hate visiting it - it just smells/feels unhealthy somehow when you walk in from the outside fresh air and makes me feel so lethargic when I've been there for anything longer than 20 mins. Stuffy, over warm, fetid, airless, unhealthy yucky staleness.

Can you tell I hate an unaired house?! Grin

In our house I open all the upstairs windows the minute we get up and showered. Then when we're going out the house 40 mins later maybe I'll go round and shut them all. I don't bother at night during the winter usually if it's very cold. But if it's warm/feels stuffy then I'll open a couple of windows for half an hour or so.

Clearly our windows are not open for a long time each day during winter but it is enough to prevent the "low in oxygen" feel that I feel at PIL house.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/01/2015 15:11

I think you can really noticed an unaired house when someone is ill too. It just feels like a house of germs when it's over hot and airless. Dh thinks I'm mad (same argument about heating costs), but I'm not sure how much money you lose by opening most of the windows for half an hour each day. Not much I bet. Especially if it's just as the heating is going off as everyone leaves for work/school.

MulledWineMincePie · 01/01/2015 15:14

every couple of days. I tend to air the children's room less, even though it probably needs it more Grin because their window opens at the bottom and they are on first floor, so worried that I might forget to close it before they go back in. I need to get a safety catch for it, but keep forgetting.

Have skylights in our loft bedroom, which gets really hot. If we don't air it often, it gets really hot and stuffy up there, so we often have the skylights open at night a little to keep the air cooler.

I also often have the windows open on the air filter level, brain not working well so can't remember the name of it - the little catch which opens it just a tiny bit and locks it there.

In the summer, the windows are open most of the time.

MulledWineMincePie · 01/01/2015 15:15

issy just read your post properly 'trickle vents' ! that's the name I was thinking of, I think Grin

CurlyhairedAssassin · 01/01/2015 15:16

On a roll here. There is a morning breath slight smell to a bedroom first thing. What happens if you never open the window to let that out? Does that stale smell just build and build?

People used to be paranoid about making sure people (esp babies and children and invalids) got enough air in the old days. It was seen as vital to health. I hate these modern hospital wards where there is only air con. I always want to open a window for proper fresh air when I visit. Maybe I was a matron in a past life!

MulledWineMincePie · 01/01/2015 15:16

But. I can't say I have ever observed the window opening habits of my neighbours. I will, of course, not be able to help myself now...

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 01/01/2015 15:20

Every day - the bedroom and bathroom windows are almost always locked on the latch to allow airflow, the kitchen window gets opened when we cook, and at least once a week I open all the upstairs windows wide for an hour.

Our opposite neighbour never airs, their windows are always streaming with condensation. It can't be healthy.

Mini05 · 01/01/2015 15:21

Everyday! There open now(not wide)
