my evil smelly cellar

over the summer my new cellar has Grown Things on the skirting boards. (not big things, just occasional little spots)

I think the warmer weather has made it more humid.

I have cleaned them all off but they have crept back (admittedly less this time) and I have ordered a dehumidifier

but in the meantime it smells all icky - we have a carpet down there which was probably a bad idea. I want to give it a really good clean and then stick the dehumidifier on which should get rid of the excess water etc and stop it happening again

however any ideas what to clean it with? I have googled it but I just got websites more or less telling me to throw the contents of the room away entirely before burning them in controlled environments

or any other general cellar advice? (the prob is caused by condensation not damp, since it has been recently dampproofed to within an inch of its life and constantly inspected by independent professionals)

Carpet probably harbouring a lot of fustyness and may need binning.

Use an allpurpose spray containing bleach and a brush to scrub with.
Are there any windows or outside walls you can fit an airbrick/vent in? Or stick a flexible pipe out via the ceiling? If you can afford it or it's feasible a sunpipe might help prevent fungi by letting more natural daylight in.
Teatree oil in a ceramic ring around the lightbulb? Smell of teatree oil may be the lesser of 2 evils

MamaGhoul LOL .

A certain brand of Mould and Mildew thread is good for freshening up your mouldy bits, leaves it all very fresh and smelling a bit like a swimming pool.

can you use bleach on gloss paint?

A bleech based cleaner should be OK, maybe test first. I wouldn't pour it on neat but a scrub with a cleaner should be OK.
