Washing

So we are a very large household of 8 sometimes up to 10. Last year I bought a new Miele washing machine which I'm thrilled with as very economical on water and electricity. Although cycles do take a while up to 3 hrs. So I'm beginning to think I need a second machine for occasional simultaneous use on days it's just getting out of hand. Miele cost £900, second machine needs to be more of a budget brand with productive but shorter cycles. I have lots of muddy boys Sad. Looking forward to your suggestions, that include me not moving out Wink

Beko!
DS2 (appliance enthusiast) has an 8kg model, and Ive used it as well, its a cracking machine with lots of flexibility and it wasn't too expensive either, £250 from ao.com IIRC

Clutterbugsmum · 24/10/2014 21:34

I was just looking at this BEKO one for £249. I wash looking as it has a 28min full 8kg wash.

My mums has one it she has had no issues with t all, where as I have had a Hotpoint washer/dryer for 6yrs and the drum, concrete base has been replaced twice already a long with other parts.

Clutterbugsmum · 24/10/2014 21:36

I was looking not wash even

Missingsleepandthecat · 24/10/2014 21:45

DS2's is similar if not the same as that, its in our garage with a few other machines he has, the Beko is the one he uses the most because it gets through piles of washing in 3 hours, the daily wash is what he uses the most.
DS2: If you use cool a lot, gunge builds up in the outer drum meaning you need to buy machine cleaners periodically, this has like a drum "wash" on it which gets quite hot and flushes the drum and tub out completely meaning your washer stays spotless inside and that it keeps washing perfectly first time, oh, they also have a non catch drum in them too

He loves reviewing stuff too, OP :)

MrsExtraOrdinary · 24/10/2014 22:18

Brilliant thankyou! Was wondering about beko as I know they are generally cheap. So will have a good look.

DD2 was really impressed with DS2's Beko, she bought one and finds it washes well and that DGD's skin isn't irritated like it was with her old machine

specialsubject · 25/10/2014 14:03

is there no way of cutting it down? Muddy outdoor clothes don't need washing every single time, they just change when they come in. Also why are you doing it all?

MrsExtraOrdinary · 25/10/2014 14:08

I do expect the children to do other jobs around the house. Hoovering, windows and dishwasher loading, reloading, but in the past when it comes to washing they are awful at it. I'm not moaning about the amount really just trying to think of ways to get through it quicker. I have a cleaner but she can't get her head around it at all. She puts everyone's clothes away in the wrong people's rooms and it just becomes chaos in no time.

MrsExtraOrdinary · 25/10/2014 14:10

Any way they can't really help if the washing machine is already in use, which is the current problem. It's on continually and I can't catch up with the backlog.

My Miele has a 32 min expresswash
Was why I bought it tbh

Catsmamma · 25/10/2014 14:15

3 hours is a ridiculous time for a cycle....I am furious if the programme on mine is more than an hour, and then it is an hour in Washing Machine World....which seems to be completely at odds with real life time.

rabbit123 · 25/10/2014 16:11

3 hours in a Miele? Ours takes 90 minutes, max! Even less if I use the "short" option. I don't like using quick wash cycles as they skip a rinse and don't reach full temperature, but I did find that the daily quick/time saver with extra rinse selected did a good job on my partners old Beko.

Thewildthingsliveatmyhouse · 25/10/2014 16:17

we have a large load Indesit which is great, but the wash times average 1.5-2 hrs. Maybe catch up at the launderette if you can?

MrsExtraOrdinary · 25/10/2014 16:25

I have tried the short options and that's fine for just a few bits but full loads need the longer cycles on my Miele. I'd had a hotpoint prior to that lasted me10 years and only broke down once. But was advised they were rubbish these days. Went for Miele as didn't want it breaking down on me. But cycle length is becoming a problem.

I think that will a little (more) organisation you could do it with the Miele alone, without too much hassle.

If you keep doing the sorting all you have to do is put the next couple of loads by the machine with the tablets etc that need to go in with it and get some laminated cards with the wash type on them.

You could easily have a wash in at 7am, one at 6pm and one at 9pm and that's assuming there's no one home in the day - so that's 15 loads in during the week, more if anyone is home in the day and others at the weekend.

If you aren't home, roster the loading and hanging/tumbling between everyone else.

Then again, I suppose if you have the space for one - why not.

MrsExtraOrdinary · 25/10/2014 17:31

Well im not that unorganised considering the number of people there are in the house. We both work full time running our own businesses. The fact is 5 loads a day is more realistic than 3.

OP posts:
ChillingGrinBloodLover · 25/10/2014 20:21

I didn't say you were disorganised dafty Grin Maybe I needed a wry grin after my comment? I'm trying to limit my emoticon use... my posts have started to look like an episode of the Simpsons! But maybe they would have been well placed in my previous posts... I was kind of going ShockGrin[MORE ORGANISED IS THAT POSSIBLE>>> POOR WOMAN] but clearly it didn't come across like that - sorry :(

Have a bank of them if it works for you Grin

notsoold · 25/10/2014 21:00

MrsE.... I had a beko and it was ok. Not brilliant but ok. Got ourselves a Samsung. The daily wash is just over a hour ...

Missingsleepandthecat · 25/10/2014 22:00

DS2 has had 2 bekos, the first one was rubbish and he vowed never to have another one, but, he decided to give them another go and its much better and its better made as well compared to the last one

Purpleroxy · 25/10/2014 22:03

There must be a better cycle on the Miele than 3 hours. That is such a waste of time. My standard wash takes 1 hour and that can be made quicker or longer depending on what you need.

Superlovely · 25/10/2014 22:19

Have you tried using the auto cycle not the cotton?
I like my Miele but agree cycles can be long. I often set timer to start at 6am so I have a load fine when I get up.

MrsExtraOrdinary · 26/10/2014 09:06

Thanks chilling! I'm probably a tad defensive about washing status ShockConfusedBlush

OP posts:
MrsExtraOrdinary · 26/10/2014 09:10

Don't get me wrong there are some good shorter cycles on the Miele, if it was just for a half load perhaps they'd be ok, or perhaps not heavily soiled clothes, but I've got sweaty teenagers and those cycles don't seem to get the BO out of PE tops and mud and grass strains out of white shirts by the hundred. I think white shirts were sent to push most mothers over the edge. Blush

I have the cheapest washing machine that Argos had for sale last year when my very expensive hotpoint washer drier bit the dust.

It has a 30 min quick wash which is what I use for most stuff, and a 90 degree wash for whites and then a sports wash for the sports kit.

It's fantastic and it was on an offer at £129. When it dies, it dies. Cheaper than repairing the bearings on the utterly crap hotpoint.

agoodbook · 26/10/2014 09:27

I love my Miele too - second one after 1st gave 20 years of faithful service :) - and it was still going strong when I bought the new one. But - they do have long cycles. I tend to put my washing on at night ready to hang out next day if I have lots - Sounds like you need one of those enormous American top loaders !
