Washing machine making a burning smell

My washing machine has stopped mid cycle, and when I tried to turn it back on it made a burning smell when the drum was turning. DH thinks it is an 'electrical' type burning smell. It's just over 4 years old and was one of the cheapest at the time (Bush).
Does anyone reckon there is any point paying someone to look at it or should I assume it's dead and get a new one? It's just last time when my quite expensive LG washing machine died I paid for someone to look at it, but it was going to cost so much to fix it was better to get a cheap new one.

I would bin and get another one. Once the brains gone it's just not worth getting repaired.

and meantime make sure you unplug it.

Hi. Bush has recalled some models because they caught fire, mine is about the same age as yours.

It is model number: WM 1270 TVE

If you contact Bush customer service, and say you believe they have concerns on this model, they are really pleased and relieved to hear from you. They send you an engineer within a couple of days and he takes out the mother board from the machine, and puts in a new one completely free of charge.

forgot to add they told me not to use the machine if i was not in the house.

It's worth moaning at Bush. My zanussi dishwasher caught fire when 2yo and out of guarantee. I rang zanussi up and they had someone here the next day fixing it free of charge.

I forgot to say it was only this year when Bush contacted me about the model number above - just about 3 months ago thats all, and they were really good on the phone. They sent out the info themselves as a number of the machines with the model number were causing fire concerns.

Thanks for all your replies. Doggeanie thank you so much for that. Mine is a 1460 TVE so not on the recall list as far as I can see, but I will give them a call and see what they say. I have been cautiously using it after a short cycle under close observation didn't show any problems (it was near the end of a long hot cycle when the problem occurred before). I definitely won't be leaving it on when I go out like I used to!
Thanks again everybody.

I wouldn't use it at all until its been checked. Whether I'm in the house or not!

There was a thread on here ages ago from someone whose tumble dryer caught fire while they were in the house. They were 6ft away from it, smelt some burning, saw a wisp of smoke. They got the kids out the house, ran over the road to neighbours to call fire brigade. Ran back to the house and the fire was raging. I believe most of the downstairs was gutted.

I'm not been funny but what are you planning to do if it catches fire while you're in the house? The only benefit of been at home is that you can potentially stand in the garden watching as your house burns down.

Sorry I don't mean to sound arsey but I'm just worried for you.
