bizarre I know but I have a question re Dog Poo!

We've bought a house and will be moving in within a couple of weeks, the only trouble being that the previous owners had a big dog, and have kindly and thoughfully left a collection of dog poo in the gravel in the garden.

What charming people.

I have gone over the gravel with a rake and thrown out all the poo I can find but I'm feeling rather paranoid about my ds, who is four, and who is a real outdoor boy, spends loads of time in the garden and if there is anything yucky to find, he WILL find it and put his hands in it! Am i correct in thinking that dog poo can cause nasty things in children or is that something else?

Am I right to be worried?

Dunno what else I can do though anyway, have got rid of what I could see but am still concerned that as the gravel gets churned up ds will discover more

thanks for any advice!

oooh, that's nasty. Dog poo can be dangerous to children - which is why dogs are generally excluded from play areas in parks.

Is there loads of gravel? I might be tempted to replace it.

Yes you are right dog and cat poo can contain toxiplasmosis which can lead to serious illness and blindness in children. As long as you've cleared up all you can i'm sure it'll be fine.

pressure washer?

WigWamBam · 02/10/2006 11:41

I have to say I'd err on the side of caution and replace the gravel.

Gingerbear · 02/10/2006 11:43

Charming!
how big an area of gravel is it? I would hose it down first, then get some Jeyes fluid or bleach in some hot water in a bucket and pour some over the gravel.
If it is just too big, then I would be tempted to replace at least the top layer.

Sunnysideup · 02/10/2006 11:50

oh gosh thanks everyone. There is lots of gravel and it's laid very deeply....however I would consider replacing it as ds' health more important! I will try the hosing down and bleach thing first I think.

Thanks for the tips. Will have a serious chat with ds about not touching anything that looks like a lump of mud!

People are so GROSS aren't they, letting their dog poo in their own garden rather than getting off their lardy bums and taking them out...or even scooping up from their own garden - definition of laziness, isn't it!

Our dog, positively most definitely will not poo in our garden - never has, even as a pup . I always scoop the poop when we are out too, I hate seeing turds lying around.
Very lazy of the previous owners - I bet it stank!

I would not worry about replacing the gravel - but I would make up a bleach type solution and liberally splash it all over the gravel - and then with a broom rub over all the pebbles, effectively washing them.

Then I would hosepipe off all the gravel to get rid of the bleach type solution.

If the dog belonging to the prev owners was vaccinated (and being a pet I assume it was) then the risks are very small.

When we moved into our house, the previous owners had a dog, but they said 'don't worry about poo in the garden, we have a 'dog loo'. I didn't realise it's a bin dug into the floor that you put the 'scooped poop' in, I thought the dog went and squatted on it.
