how to clean mouldy painted wooden window frames?

Our window frames are not in great condition. They are wooden and painted white but some of the paint in flaking.

They're getting mouldy. How do I clan this off without scraping off more paint?

Also, in the winter especially we get really bad condensation which drips down onto the frames which I guess makes the mould worse.

Would it be worth getting one of those karcher window vacs to suck up the condensation every day?

A damp expert recommened Milton baby bottle sterilising solution to me. I haven't tried it yet so can't actually recommend it, but it'll be less likely to take the paint off than bleach based things. I use dettol mould and mildew spray (it comes in a bright green bottle) and it works a treat but does dissolve the paint a little.

you have to cut down the moisture in your home which causes condensation. You can't paint wet wood.

How long each day do you open the windows?

Do you drape wet washing around your home?

I have this problem in my bathroom. Wooden frames, flaky paint, mould and no extractor fan.

Thanks for these responses- I'll def try milton- prob still got some somewhere, I am just worried about more paint coming off.

We have a heated clothes drier which is downstairs in one room and its upstairs which is v damp- actually it doesnt feel damp but the windows are just always full of condensation.

should i be opening the windows in winter?

thanks

water vapour is lighter than air so it rises (hence clouds)

If you tip a couple of pints of water into your home, it will cause damp.

Yes, you should open the windows to let the water out, otherwise it will accumulate and cause condensation, damp and mould. In the UK, the greatest cause of this is wet washing draped inside homes.

Has your bathroom got an extractor fan that works? Has the kitchen?

Karcher window vac works for us to suck up the condensation - before we were using towels which then had to be washed and dried which just compounded the problem. Then yes, you need to heat the bad rooms properly and also open the windows. We open the windows when go to work and close them before the heating comes on in the evening. It helps.

Just spray all around the frame with HG Mould Spray. Leave for 10/15 mins and hey presto - clean window frames. Just done my bathroom window - so easy and makes it look likes its just been repainted.

thanks!

HG is brilliant.
I use an old toothbrush to clean with it.

Yes my frames are wood. I have just been sitting in the bath this morning admiring them!
