Carpet/rug cleaning

Hello ladies! I'm saving up for new flooring upstairs but the carpets need a good clean in the meantime...however I don't want to spend money on getting them professionally cleaned. What's the best way to do it myself? Hands and knees with a bucket and cloth? I don't have a steam cleaner. Thanks

Hi there,
The bottom of your carpet is full of embedded dust and grit. This is unavoidable and happens on all carpets. It's what makes the pile go flat and discoloured. Wetting the carpet without using a proper carpet washer to suck the dirty water back out will create dust-mud in the bottom of your carpet.

Maybe you could hire a rug doctor? We hired one for about £35 from B&Q for 2 days, they do a great job.

Failing that, I'd try one of those spray foam carpet shampoo's that you leave to dry and vacuum out. I think Vanish and 1001 both do them. Those won't be as good as a proper carpet cleaner but would be better than just water and won't leave all that wet dust in the carpet after you vac it up

Thank you, I never thought about hiring something and doing it myself. It would definitely be cheaper!
