hey minimalist folks; how many kitchen pans do we need?

We are replacing our gas hob with induction so need to by a complete set of pans again (except for a very heavy hob, which we've got covered.)

We are minimalist kind of people so only want to buy what we need. I am thinking:

  • frying pan
  • big, medium and small saucepan
  • medium and small non stick saucepan
  • smaller wok

How does that sound?
What have you got?

We have

  • big and little frying pans
  • milk pan and 2 medium non stick pans (nesting)
  • 1 big, non-non-stick pan

Also a Le creuset casserole which can go on hob or in oven.

Picklewickle · 20/10/2014 12:19

The small frying pan is used for heating children's spaghetti hoops etc, reheating their bolognese etc or even boiling their veg! I love the way it takes up so little space in the dishwasher

In terms of what we use regularly (we have 3 cooked meals a day so they get a lot of use):

  • small, med and large saucepans
  • milk pan (use for sauces and small amounts of veg - v useful)
  • large frying pan (just done a curry in this so not just for frying)
  • small frying pan
  • wok
  • wide, shallow Le Creuset casserole.

We then have a few things we've acquired a long time ago before I became more minimalist - 3 tier steamer, 3 sizes of Le Creuset casserole and a large stockpot used for bulk cooking of chilli etc. They come out occasionally but I would never buy them now.

larryphilanddave · 20/10/2014 19:25

We have:

  • 2 frying pans (1 large, 1 small/20cm)
  • 1 large pot/pan (like a wok)
  • set of 4 nesting saucepans

These are all non stick and we use all of our pans regularly which is how we decided to keep them, we got rid of others. We will however be adding a pressure cooker, which we used to have but I threw it out because I spontaneously repurposed it as a sick bowl during bad D&V bout and couldn't face using it for cooking again

WingsClipped · 20/10/2014 19:48

We downsized to a smaller house earlier this year and we have got
1 frying pan- largish size
2 saucepans- 1 large, 1 medium
1 milk pan
1 le creuset casserole
Tempted to add a griddle pan but haven't decided yet so trying not to cave in and buy it

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/10/2014 19:52

I have 3 saucepans
Mahoosive stock pot saucepan
2 frying pans
Griddle
Flat iron thing for doing drop scones and Welshcakes on.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/10/2014 19:52

Oh yeah, and a wok.

CremeEggThief · 20/10/2014 21:15

I have a wok, frying pan, milk pan and three sauce pans and a casserole. I couldn't cope with any more!

poocatcherchampion · 20/10/2014 22:04

most of you are saying the same: approx 4 pans and a frying pan or 2. I think we will start there and then as to it if required.
fab!
thanks.

Pressure cooker, small, medium & large saucepans and 1 small frying pan - tiny kitchen!

MrsPear · 23/10/2014 17:52

Sauté pan - for chilli etc
Milk pan - boiled eggs, beans etc
Small and medium saucepan pasta rice etc
Small frying pan - 20cm Spanish omelette

Larrytheleprechaun · 24/10/2014 22:42

One of the best thing I ever bought was a three tier steamer saucepan. It is used about six days of the week in my house.

poocatcherchampion · 25/10/2014 22:30

oh we've had one of those since we got married. never used it once. won't be replacing.

4 pots of various sizes with glass lids.
4 pans of various sizes -I tried to cull the pans when I decluttered but they are all perfect for what they are so I kept them all:

  • small cast iron pan, prefect for frying eggs, spices, seeds, heating small amounts of food (I don't have a microwave), can also go in oven etc;
  • old black well used medium sized pan. It's not non-stick but it's non stick IYKWIM - my go to pan for smaller meals, pancakes etc;
  • larger silver pan, usually used to roast chicken etc in the oven;
  • quite large ScanPan titanium coated pan, this is the BOMB and I love it. It also doubles as a 'wok' and I can cook large meals in it.

I would quite like one of those steamer pots. But I resist.

atticusclaw · 27/10/2014 14:18

Do your pans definitely need replacing. Check them with a magnet. We were lucky and only need a new deep frying pan.

I also bought a hob top kettle to save on clutter on the work tops and because it boils so much more quickly that an electric kettle.

I love my induction hob btw, it's amazing.

Oh goodness! I clearly need to downsize!! I have tonne (literally - they are SO heavy) of Le Creuset: four pans starting from milk pan up, a pair of casserole (one med size and one large) and two frying pans. Plus I had a skillet, jam pan and an omelette pan. I had them from my catering days and wouldn't be parted from them. Then we have the ones we got as wedding pressies - stainless steel wok, large casserole, steamer with 3 layers and a frying pan. Tbh we could probably get by with just what we got for our wedding, it would make a lot of space in our cupboards! Thank god DH's exW took literally everything he owned or we wouldn't be able to get in the kitchen!!
