Was sad enough to have 1/2 watched "How clean is yr house" the other day . But aside from the rather pathetic bloke (who surely had some MH issues to have lived like that for 10 yrs?) I noticed they were recommending home-made/natural stuff for cleaning - home-made pot pourri/bath cleaner etc. Anyone got any tips/recommnedations on things they use aorund the hosue? TIA!

Hmm,i was thinking MH too.

Soda crystals good for cleaning floor with mop.
Lemons get limescale offstuff.
Steam cleaners pretty eco sound too I reckon-just steam.

RanToTheHills · 30/09/2006 18:30

Your new best friends are bicarb, vinegar and salt!!
vinegar (put in an empty 'spray' bottle, dlute with a little water) and newspaper is unbeatable for cleaning glass! Smell disappears very quickly.

Bicarb of soda mixed with vinegar is excellent sinkhole cleaner/unblocker

Vinegar and Salt. Mix together for a good surface cleaner.

Baking Soda. Dissolve 4 tablespoons baking soda in 1 warm water for a general cleaner. Or use neat baking soda on a damp sponge. Baking soda will clean and deodorize all kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

To clean loo - Baking Soda and Vinegar. Sprinkle baking soda into the bowl, then drizzle with vinegar and scour with a toilet brush. This combination both cleans and deodorizes. DO NOT use bleach with vinegar as fume combination is dangerous.

Baths - Vinegar and Baking Soda. To remove film buildup on bathtubs, apply vinegar full-strength to a sponge and wipe with vinegar first. Next, use baking soda as you would scouring powder. Rub with a damp sponge and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Soap. Regular cleaning with plain soap and hot water will kill some bacteria. Keep things dry. Mold, mildew, and bacteria cannot live without moisture.

Borax has good for its disinfectant and deodorizing properties. Mix 1/2 cup Borax into 1 gallon hot water and clean with this solution. (Not sure where to get Borax anymore though - I used to gt it from old fashoned ironmonger place which has now closed down )

oven - Baking Soda and very Fine Steel Wool Sprinkle water followed by a layer of baking soda. Rub gently with a very fine steel wool pad for tough spots. Wipe off scum with dry paper towels or a sponge. Rinse well and wipe dry

Porcelain Cleaner - Cream of Tartar. To clean porcelain surfaces, rub with cream of tartar sprinkled on a damp cloth. Works well on light stains.

Indian washing nut shells are good for washing clothes and nappies.

thanks all! Shall save those tips and try to convert to them when I've used up my various potions (rather toxic mix actually as some came courtesy of previous owner of our house)
