Electric to gas hob - cheaper bills?

We've got an electric hob which I hate. It takes ages to heat up and then to cool down again. I'm thinking of switching to gas and wondered whether anyone had done this and seen a difference in their energy bills? We cook a lot so I think it would make me much happier but it would be good if this was an added bonus.

According to Which?, gas will work out cheaper. The biggest difference with a hob is instant heat, which makes up for more bits to keep clean - I really like ceramic hobs in that respect, but have never owned one.

The amount of gas or electricity you use for cooking, is far less than the amount you use for hot water, and in winter, for heating. don't believe you'll notice the difference, unless perhaps you are running a caff and have the hob going all day.

If your mum had a gas cooker, you will probably only be happy with the same.

Ovens use very little power so matter even less.

Interesting. Thank you. Will try and investigate that information with Which.

Love PigletJohn's wry observations. I now know why I love my LPG hob so much!!

Ha Pigletjohn, actually I learnt to cook on an old Aga but there's no way we could afford one or even fit one in our kitchen! I miss the gas hob in my old house though.

I had no idea that ovens were so cheap to run. I always imagine that it's costing a fortune every time I switch it on.

We've got an induction hob which I love. Apparently more economical than gas, it heats water faster than the kettle, and it cools down quickly. Also like that it turns of automatically when you remove the saucepan/with a timer. AND easy to clean.

Induction hobs are more efficient, but energy from electricity costs about three times as much as energy from gas.

As cooking uses only a fraction of the energy you use for hot water, and especially for winter heating, I think it's a red herring.
