How to stop a favourite friend stinking of wee?

DS is yet to be dry at night and his beloved stuffed toy has taken the brunt of it all. He's an old plush dog with what feels like beans inside. Surface clean only (of course Confused.

I've washed him in bio powder, stuck him in a the machine and hung him on the line on a sunny day. If anything, he smells worse.

Anyone had a problem like this and solved it?

We had some results with locking toy in a plastic box of (clean!) cat litter for a few days, then rewashing. Or bicarb of soda apparently has magical odour removal properties... But my nose is highly sensitive to these things so in the end we cut open, removed the stuffing and replaced it with new.

Open heart surgery? On spot?

Thanks quietly, might try the bicarb and cat litter first...

I would start with an exploratory laparotomy via a key hole incision to see what sort of beans he has. If they can't be washed I would do as shocking suggested and go for an organ transplant.

If the operation is successful at least he can be washed happily whenever he gets a bit whiffy, or if the beans look like plastic beads just close up your keyhole incision and chuck him in the machine.

scalpel at the ready...

Stick him in an airtight box and cover him in bicarbonate of soda for a few days. Give him a good shake every now and again...

Soak him in the cheap white vinegar, then launder him again - that might help.

Go to a pet shop and buy some Simple Solution Enzyme Cleaner.

Ooooh great ideas, thank you all so much. As soon as I can convince DS1 to art with him will try them one by one. Will report back...

Maybe whatever he is filled with is reacting to getting wet (with wee or when you're trying to wash him)?

Could you perform major surgery.....make a hole in a seam, tip out contents, wash his outer 'skin' and then refill with something that can be washed and sew him back up ?

britishbakeoffblues · 08/10/2014 21:24

My DS's toy that he sucks gets washed and then tumble dried on hot. Smells much better afterwards!!

minesapintofwine · 11/10/2014 16:29

See I am just really devil may care idiotic as I would just chuck it in the washing machine!

CakeUpWall · 11/10/2014 16:44

There are 2 products which I've found effective at eliminating odours, when used in the washing machine. Halo Sports Wash (available in some supermarkets) and, for a cheaper option, Tesco Expert Sports & Workwear liquid. This latter one is actually really good for stinky trainers, so may do the job for you too. Smile

tea tree oil works a treat on nappies. ..

littlesupersparks · 11/10/2014 16:47

I have heard of freezing toys to disinfect them?

BertieBotts · 11/10/2014 16:50

Some bean filled toys have the beans in a net.

diggerdigsdogs · 12/10/2014 06:32

What brand is the friend?

Dc have some jellycat toys. I've merrily chucked them in the machine and tumble dried them.

Iggly · 12/10/2014 06:37

How old is ds? I would lift him at your bedtime to minimise accidents. And also rearrange said toy i.e out of wees way!
