Just bought a dehumidifier..when's best to use it?

SO..after much deliberation I've bought a dehumidifier from Aldi. Our three kids share a room and there's always loads of condensation on the window in the morning. Can I just put it on in the morning or does it have to be on overnight to extract the moisture from the air?

I have mine on during the day. I find if its on overnight it makes the air really dry and we start coughing. It's amazing how much water they collect!

That makes sense, it's the noise factor as well that's making me think that daytime would be best.

in the morning, you can open the windows after pulling off the bedclothes. It ventilates out the most air FOC.

Hi Clarabumps, how is the dehumidifier? Saw it in Aldi this morning and was tempted. Figured that if it's £129 in Aldi then it would be going up for £200 elsewhere. Recommended or not? Thank you

I'd go with opening the windows wide in the morning to clear the air, then run the dehumidifier in the afternoon. They help to warm the air so you'll feel toasty in the evening.

We only have a dehumidifier downstairs- I open windows upstairs in the morning, then run the dehumidifier downstairs in the room where I dry our clothes with all the doors open.

I like running it in the day as it means we don't need to pop the heating on but can still be a bit warmer.

Hi,
Sorry I forgot all about this. It is a good machine, relatively quiet. I've been opening the windows in the morning around 7am, then I close them at 9 and the humidity level is still around 80 (whatever that means-I did read the manual, kind of)
I then put the dehum on for a few hours and the moisture level goes down to about 50 and there's a good 5 inches of water in the water catching thing. It's a 5 litre well so it's probably about half full.

I really like it. It's worth the money, the condensation is a lot less in the kids room and the windows haven't been as mouldy. I've only had to clean the sills once since getting it.

£120 well spent.

I put mine on in September and turn it off in April - without it the house is full of damp even with windows open regularly

EarSlaps · 22/10/2014 19:58

Yes, even with windows open and fans moving the air we still had a damp house before the dehumidifier.

We live in the south west, so it's hard to get much dried outside. I would like to rig up a shelter out the back really so I could dry things outside even when it rains.

I'm on the west coast of Scotland here and it's damp constantly. It's my new favourite thing. I think DP is getting fed up of me coming in with the tank saying "LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF WATER".

We have had a second hand little one for over a year but the Aldi was is a behemoth of a dehumidifier Grin and sooooo quiet.

It's just running gently away upstairs and I've cleaned the mould off the windows Blush to see how long they stay clear for - they are old wooden sash windows and we live near the sea in Cornwall so it is almost always damp Grin. Only had to empty it once so far whereas I empty the little one daily?

Clarabumps · 25/10/2014 10:09

I'm glad it's not just me who gets window mould.

We could do with replacing our double glazing. It's the old metal framed windows and they're freezing and ugly(the diamond pattern at the top).At least sash windows are pretty.

I have mine on today, have a mountain of washing to dry, it's very drizzly and freezing so no way to open the windows. Ah... I love this machine.
