Extended warrantee for a washer that takes a hammering - yay or nay?

BeepingWasher · 30/09/2014 15:22

Bosch washer, just coming up to the end of its initial 3 year warrantee and they've written offering another 3 years for £123.

Usually I turn these things down thinking that it's just more money to them for nothing, but this time I'm wavering. Our washing machine probably does about 20 loads a week and it feels like it is always on (family of five).

I think it's quite likely that it will need some kind of servicing in the next 3 years, just because it is used so much.

So, WWYD, extend the warrantee or not?

yes, OK, it's very dull but come on, WWYD?

Ages and ages ago, we took out an extended warranty on a washer-dryer. With three dc, we knew it was going to work very hard, and we wanted the security of knowing we could get it repaired when it broke down.

The first time it broke down, the repair process took weeks - far longer than it should have done - but dh complained to the MD, and the upshot was that we were offered a replacement machine, even though we were outside the first year of the warranty - and they gave us the five year warranty on the new machine.

That machine also become down within the extended warranty,,and this time the mechanic said it couldn't be repaired - so we got another new machine. This time we we added a bit extra to the value of the old machine, to get a better machine, and we did have to pay for the extended warranty, but we felt that, as we'd had two new machines out of the money we'd paid for the first machine + warranty! we thought this was good value.

This has happened a couple more times since - basically we haven't paid full price for a washing machine for over 10 years - so I would say that the extended warranty has definitely been worth it for us.

I hope this helps.

I spent the money on a Meile and it hasn't needed repairing in over 10 years.

erin99 · 02/10/2014 09:41

I think technology is improving all the time. If you bought a new one now, it would probably be bigger capacity, more efficient in energy and water, faster spin. So paying to keep an older one going is a bit of a false economy, especially as it might not break down, and there are often clauses that mean you have to pay extra for parts etc. Me, I would keep using the old one until it dies and put the £123 towards the next new one.

This assumes that I can afford to replace it if it breaks at short notice (as in, it wouldn't stop me putting food on the table), or if not, that I'd be able to use one of those 'pay over 2 years' type deals to buy the next one.

mausmaus · 02/10/2014 09:52

do it
but check first if your high usage is actually included. I'm not sure if 3 loads a day are still considered normal household use.

GoodboyBindleFeatherstone · 02/10/2014 09:53

Check SOGA. It may be unnecessary.

i would, ive got a Hotpoint, the first year the drum went then some other things

my mum originally bought the machine had it two weeks and hated it so gave it to us so a Free machine

if i had paid for it i would of been really hacked that it had so many problems in the beginning,so after the first year i took a warranty out,ive had it 4 years now and every year warranty it because every year something has gone wrong and every year of warranty has more than paid for itself

Indesit now own Hotpoint i think and it shows

Dont buy Hotpoint,my friend bought one less than 2 yrs ago and it unreparable

And 3yrs for the money works out as a £1 a week, well worth it imho

ilovechristmas1 · 03/10/2014 21:23

sorry meant to add do approx 7-9 loads a week

sanfairyanne · 03/10/2014 22:48

for hotpoint etc, definitely get the warranty
i always get it and get loads more years out of the machine, but hotpoint are a crap make. bosch might be more reliable?

Elvish · 04/10/2014 08:44

Look online for a warranty, you may be able to get it for less (check the cover is comparable). It could be quite a bit cheaper than going with the supplier or whoever they have sold your details onto.

Also, how much was the washer? If it was £200 then probably not worth extending the warranty vs. buying a new one in the next year or so. But if it was a £600 machine then the extra cover might be worth it?

Elvish · 04/10/2014 08:46

Also, I have a theory that a washer lasts 1 year for every £100 spent on it. Never had a cheap machine last over 2 years. Our current washer was £500 and has a 5 year guarantee included. Miele have a 10 year guarantee but cost £1000.....

Orangeanddemons · 04/10/2014 08:48

You are actually covered by your statutory rights for up to 6 years after purchase. Extended warranties are a waste of time IMO.

Hmmmwhatnow · 04/10/2014 08:51

We took out extended on our hotpoint and they have been out and fixed it 3 times. Always quick service. Well worth it. In fact I think the only nit of the original washer left is the casing!

bimbobaggins · 05/10/2014 18:33

I have never heard that theory Elvish although it certainly rings true. Have just purchesed my 3rd machine in 5years. Paid a bit more but this one comes with a five year warranty.

Paulocookie99 · 05/10/2014 20:11

I'd go with no .... Generally overpriced so save the cash and sure all will be fine. I have wasted money in the past and often various clauses that can lead to rejections on claims.

Have set up this forum to share good and bad service experiences ... Feel free to add your experiences.

Shop around for a comparable policy but I would be tempted to be honest. We went through 3 Hotpoints in 9 years (we only replaced like for like as they matched) and have finally given up and bought a Bosch (5 year warranty). We do 10+ loads a week.

DayLillie · 06/10/2014 12:17

meile with a 5 y guarantee are £650. I think mine was about £550 10 years ago. The useless hotpoint I had before (died irrepairably just after the guarantee ran out) was about £400. I had a friend with the same Hotpoint machine and a warranty that covered all her Hotpoint applicances (she only bought Hotpoint, partly because of buying this warranty). The same thing went wrong with hers and it was mended (Drum, housing and motor replaced) However, she was shelling out for it every year, and was without the washing machine for a few weeks whilst they were waiting for repairs/parts. Another paid for a yearly service and repair contract and worked out she could have got an expensive washing machine several times over the 15 years.

Our washing machine is on all day Saturday, sometimes into Sunday, and 2 or 3 times during the week

Elvish · 07/10/2014 13:32

It's a very special theory BimboBaggins based on a sample size of just my house!

Branleuse · 07/10/2014 13:36

Even good brands still do the whole planned obsolescence thing now, so It might well be worth it.

I rented my last dishwasher because i was so fed up of ones i bought, not working as well after a while, or breaking down

BL00CowWonders · 09/10/2014 02:31

Probably depends on your water. We have extremely hard water (snd 3dc) and washing machines just don't last. We've always had John Lewis machines with extended warranty and are now on our 3rd machine in 10 years but only paid for the first one...
