Heartfelt thanks to Engels (and Bitchy!) for leading the thread throughout September (Sept always being a busy one) despite feeling a bit poorly and despite being pregnant. Hope beneficial effects of injections kick in soon! Thanks Thanks Thanks

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons . Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

Sultanas with brie is lovely. Envy Dad used to make us slices of apple with melted cheese on top (cheap cheadder so not posh cheese) and it was the only successful bit of his cooking from my childhood

Stewedcoot · 07/10/2014 12:54

Oh dear, beat myself over the head I meant (can't even do that right) Confused

Hang in there - literally - Pushme Grin! I see you are practising the Enoch Powell method of sharpening your oratory! Grin (Full bladder technique - not the racism - obviously!)

Goth so you are not married to Ray Mears by any chance are you? Grin Grin

Good luck with it all! And yes to lining cake tins being a chore all on its own! (Especially for Christmas cakes!) I feel your pain as have to treble line here as my oven has only one setting ie scorching.

First one is in! Only 4 1/2 hours to go.
Will do the second one tomorrow rather than squeeze both in today. Hopefully be ok mixture tastes yummy

Sc TREBLE LINE

Off to wrap Bday presents now.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 07/10/2014 14:42

Is this where i am very glad that no one here actually likes/can eat fruit cake so our Christmas cake is just a poshed up and delusional sponge.

Utterly lazy day here. Weather is not inspiring effort and brain is a bit fuzzy.

ta da
Food shopping
Am almost 1 quarter through the 1st of this years Christmas blankets
emails and admin
look at route for a road trip

Weather is completely and utterly vile. Is it too early to go into hibernation?

NightOfTheCactus · 07/10/2014 16:23

Hey there folks - any room for a newbie to join in?

I am in utter chaos and I've always found housekeeping difficult. Hoping this might help to focus me.

Castlelough · 07/10/2014 16:26

TaDa:
*Work

*Munch a lot of chocolate while mulling over a mounting number of work-related tasks that need doing now asap.

*This one is DH's but I'm so happy about it: trip to the dump, including decluttering a knackered mattress which has lived in hallway/under the stairs here since we moved in. Grin Can now really tackle that zone for packing/decluttering/moving!

To Do:

  1. Wash dishes (from last night Blush)
  2. Load knitting supplies into a labelled black sack for moving house.
  3. Drop off dry cleaning on way to pilates class.
  4. Meet friends for dinner Grin
  5. Before bed routine (dust off CJ to remind self what this routine consists of!)

Waves and bbl!

Stewedcoot · 07/10/2014 16:45

Well done Goth! Is it ok to leave the mixture overnight [genuine question; not being snippy] because it would be very useful to know if so. And does your recipe contain bicarb? Just wondering if rise affected.

Bitchy arf at delusional sponge Grin

A very warm welcome to NightoftheCactus of course, always room for one more Grin!

You are ahead with tomorrow's baby-step Castle Wink

OP posts:
GoingGoingGoth · 07/10/2014 18:35

SC no problem leaving overnight, it gives the dried fruit a chance to absorb the alcohol. No bicarb, just SR Flour. To be honest it's a heavy cake, stuffed with fruit.

Bitchy I'm the big cake fan in this house, usually end up eating most of it, so I can't complain at the effort.

Hello NightoftheCactus I hope there's a good story to that name.

Done
Cake out Grin
Laundry in
Towels lovely & fluffy, so able to put away
Presents wrapped
Dinner about to be served up

Stewedcoot · 07/10/2014 19:46

Thanks Goth that makes complete sense! Very useful to know too! (You sound v. organised atm btw!)

Going to post links now and put dd to bed ... see you all in the morning!

Baby-step no. 8 for Wed 8th Oct is writing down morning & afternoon routines for what will eventually become your Control Journal. But don't feel obliged to do this if you don't want to; lots of people on this thread don't!

We are in Zone 2: the kitchen here!. Declutter for 15 mins in this zone.

The detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 2 is here.

Today's mission is : here. Clearing your fridge and fruit bowls of "science experiments"!

The daily focus for Wednesday is: anti-procrastination. Do something you have been putting off!

The monthly habit for October is getting rid of paper clutter: www.flylady.net/d/habits-of-the-month/october/ .

For a summary of the above, see the flight plan : www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-120 which should update itself daily.

Big encouraging wing flaps to one and all!

Swanhildapirouetting · 07/10/2014 21:45

sorry not much time...but I'm back from Vienna.
Ds2 was a lovely "amiable" companion, and took loads of photos of us both (beside various trams and tube signs! with occasional grand building thrown in) He guided me through all the tube junctions with great aplomb, although he was a bit impatient when it came to great Art Smile
We went to Belvedere and Schonbrunn and the zoo...and it was the most idyllic summer/Autumn weather throughout for walking around. Missed dh when it came to restaurants and cafes though as my German is non-existent. We finally dared go into a recommended (by hotel) Gasthaus on the last evening and ended up with a gourmet menu (think pickled pumpkin) that I do not think ds2 (v fussy) appreciated! My sense of direction is also atrocious which seems to be a new failing, possibly linked with being too shortsighted and longsighted to see map and street signs at same time Confused Reading ds2 The Star of Kazan SC which I recommend to your dd - all about Vienna and cooking Grin by Eva Ibbotson.

Castlelough I am so happy to hear your baby is doing well, but so sorry that you had to lose your MIL just at this time. Getting ready for babies is stressful at the best of times, (there always seems to be some project to be done before they can arrive), but I do hope you can make a nest in the new house somewhere where you can be cosy and warm and have running water at the very least. Please don't lift anything heavy as SC says.

Whoknows hope next week feels a bit calmer.

Toffee Happy Birthday to ds1. Is he 15?

Nicknacks hope you are feeling better and can have happy memories of the thing you lost even if it is gone Sad

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 07/10/2014 22:55

Finally, I have sent all my statement stuff off. Assuming it gets there safely, nothing to do but wait now, bloody hell that's been hard work.

Hopefully normal service Flying-wise will resume tomorrow.

ToffeeWhirl · 07/10/2014 23:49

Just deleted my long post .

Instead of rewriting it all, just want to say well done to WhoKnows on sending off the statement application and welcome home to Swan. Glad you and DS2 had such an enjoyable trip.

Welcome NightoftheCactus.

DS1 wouldn't come with me to the psych appointment today, so I went on my own. At least it gave me a chance to talk freely with her and she's agreed to come here next week.

This evening I told DS1 that a teacher was coming here to meet him tomorrow. This did not go down well. I can see a rocky road ahead.

Castlelough · 08/10/2014 00:19

Hmmmm I did the nice bits of my list (pilates class, dinner with friends, packed up my knitting supplies for moving house) but failed on the flying bits - including tomorrow's babystep Sc!!! Grin

But I did manage to unearth my missing GHD hair straighteners under some knitting in a drawer! Grin I was convinced a guest had taken them home with them by accident and I had persistently queried the innocence of both my sisters Blush over the last 2 years...! Oops! Great find, as they were too expensive to justify replacing!

And DH's Ta-Da list now also includes hiring a new carpenter to come and lay the wooden floors (bedrooms, hallway and sitting room), hang the doors, skirting and architraves! I am so relieved and happy - and he can start on Friday/Monday! Our original carpenter let us down at the very last minute, so thus is great progress! Grin

Thanks Swan for the lovely message. Glad your Vienna trip went well. Good luck with DS1 and teacher tomorrow.

Weary wingflaps to everyone else and welcome to the new fledgling. I'm on phone and can't scroll back to check your name, apologies.

Stewedcoot · 08/10/2014 06:50

Urgh [props eyes open with matchsticks] thank you dh for texting me from Frankfurt for a completely non-urgent reason at 4.45am and thank you dd for changing my text arrival announcement tone to Farmyard Medley Confused. (I sleep with mainline phone and mobile by my head in case of middle-of-the-night probs with fil.)

Whoknows many congratulations on sending off the statement! It all sounds like such an ordeal. Thanks

Welcome back Swan! We missed you! So glad you and ds2 had such a splendid time! Hope the Klimt at Belvedere lived up to expectations! (Have exactly the same issue with directions btw!) Thank you for book recommendation! Will be perfect for dd's Christmas stocking!

Toffee good luck today with ds1 and the visiting teacher and very positive that the psych has offered to come to your home too (even if ds1 may not think so!).

Great news about the carpenter Castle!! (And don't worry, the same baby-steps will come around next month Grin think you have more than enough to contend with as it is atm!)

Right, off to do the school run ... looks beautifully grey and rainy outside ...

Have a good day everyone!

OP posts:
Stewedcoot · 08/10/2014 08:48

Right back from school run and quick dive in to supermarket. Time for cup of tea, quick re-boot of laundry, and off to volunteering slot. Wish I could post some thing less dull but days just seem to consist of boring chores here atm. Cannot even be bothered to post list! Should be being more inspirational as thread leader I know! Blush

Sorry SC am giggling at Farmyard Medley, I bet you wondered just what was going on at such an ungodly hour.

Swan Vienna sounds lovely, will look out for that book, I'm sure DD has read some previously.

Castle Grin at straighteners. Are you going to 'confess' to your sisters? Or just wait for them to notice your hair? Good news re carpenter.

Congrats to WhoKnows and fingers crossed for Toffee hope today goes well.

Cactus make sure you read the OP, and don't try to do everything. Start with the Babysteps.

DH has taken DD to school again this morning, which has given me a head start at home.

Hi to Cactus.

Glad you had a good time in Vienna, Swan. V Envy because I've translated guide books to Vienna, books on Klimt etc, but never been there.

Hope everything goes well today Toffee.

Very grey and miserable here too, SC.

I did get spurred on to flick a duster around a bit just now, and will try and hoover later so at least there's a semblance of tidiness...

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 08/10/2014 10:13

Crazy couple days here, but back to normal life (hopefully) now.

ta da
usual morning routine, school run x2
checked bank
updated budget
rang council to set up repair
replied to some emails

to do
ds to dentist
organise timer on heater
2 loads of laundry (1 in now)
clean floor upstairs bathroom
clean drain out upstairs bathroom
vacuum living room
15 min tidy on bedrooms
finish meal plan for this week and next
make grocery and errand list
get electrician booked to install lighting
get the flaming couch to 2k programme going that I keep putting off
find (or take) picture of us for new white antique-looking frame

Plus a few other fiddly little things. And coffee. Lots of coffee. (2 cups so far this morning.... )

Later this week I need to take ds1's glasses in to be fixed again, as they got broken at school and are practically in pieces. Shock Not happy.

GoingGoingGoth · 08/10/2014 10:59

Found my earring! Smile And not by treading on it

NickNacks · 08/10/2014 11:06

Thank you everyone.

It was a video of my 20week scan with ds2. They taped it for us.

In my haste that we could just get rid of all our videos since we don't have a VHS played anymore I forgot I had it.

I can't help it I just keep crying everytime I think about it.

GoingGoingGoth · 08/10/2014 11:28

Oh NickNacks

ToffeeWhirl · 08/10/2014 13:55

That's so sad, NickNacks. I'm sorry.

DS1's new teacher is absolutely lovely and I'm sure he'll get on very well with her: he refused to come down today until the very end, when he did at least say goodbye to her (from the top of the stairs). But it's a start. She suggested to me that they work on a project together about something that interests him. When I said he's interested in Japan, she said she travelled there - perfect! He'll really like her, I'm sure.

Had to do a quick hoover and tidy up before she arrived, so that's my Flying done for this morning.

Eating lunch now, then will start home ed with DS2.
