Heartfelt thanks to Engels (and Bitchy!) for leading the thread throughout September (Sept always being a busy one) despite feeling a bit poorly and despite being pregnant. Hope beneficial effects of injections kick in soon! Thanks Thanks Thanks

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons . Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

Indeed, Bitchy. I fear for us all if such a thing came to pass. It is therefore your duty to save us from fates unknown by keeping a small token in each Grin

I fear the laundry god is a capricious one, Alice - we must be careful in our dealings with it.

Stewedcoot · 02/10/2014 20:48

Snap Bitchy! My laundry basket is also painfully shy and rarely, if ever, shows its bottom to anyone Grin

[Muses on appropriate offerings for laundry God] Alice, after the mess dh has made in the kitchen tonight, I could happily construct a large pyre made out of his socks ...I'll even volunteer to light it...Wink

Arf at cheese research Gladhoc (my dh would have loved that!)

Waves to Toffee and everyone else!

Ta da:
morning routine inc rabbits, wm, dw and extra thorough s&s
carried laundry panier down to basement and sorted in to piles
folded dried towels
washed a load more towels (still on hyper nit alert)
changed double bed
quick supermarket shop
30 mins French
another load of washing on and hung up
washed sports kit
washed ballet kit
prepped a load of baking and then remembered that my friend only eats gluten free so er, didn't do any Blush
wrapped two presents and wrote two cards
hwk supervision
fish and chips for supper (dh did the chips)
wrote thank you note to dd's form teacher - who found dd's coat - yay!

Should have done a lot more but could not be arsed ... hopefully having my friend pitch up early-ish tomorrow will scare me in to some action!

Big feathery waves to one and all!

How very public spirited of you, SC Grin

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 02/10/2014 22:32

Didn't get everything on my to do list for today done, but did managed to get stuff that wasn't on it done.

Friday's to do
ds to school with added extra bits
work
laundry
folding
ironing
pack ds' stuff for wkend
long drive
sort out stuff to drop off with charity shop/tip/recycling etc

I think realistically that is about all that will be possible to achieve tomo. In the grand scheme of things there is sooo much that needs to be done that anything is a drop in the ocean but still the only way to eat an elephant and all that...

GoingGoingGoth · 02/10/2014 23:40

Popping in before bedtime, I seem to have walked for miles today, but as my pedometer app is playing up I have no idea just how far Sad

Didn't get the ironing done as I had a meeting this evening, but we did plant 112 garlic cloves and 168 red onions, plus do a lot of weeding at the Croft this afternoon. It was lovely there. We cleared the remainder of the giant radish bed, which was greatly appreciated by the goats and pigs.

Day in the city tomorrow, got to get birthday presents for DD, she's 10 next weekend (where does the time go?!)

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 03/10/2014 07:07

Huge list of "to do"s today. Will pop back on later and post.

Good morning all!

pushmepullyou · 03/10/2014 07:21

Train to London this am. Still need to tidy round the house before I go and do finances when I get back. although could be a bit late by then!

My laundry basket is empty but this is because I threw half my clothes away in a Marie Kondo inspired tidying frenzy!

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 03/10/2014 07:34

pushme goodness, lots of travelling for you this week. Is that through work? (nosey and curious me, so obviously you don't need to tell me if you don't want to - just jealous of you getting around to different places!)

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 03/10/2014 08:50

Can i go back to bed? Hmm

Ds has been despatched to school with all the extra gubbins he needed this morning. next stop work.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 03/10/2014 09:02

Ha. I want to go back to bed too, but unfortunately I can't.

Just got off the phone with ds2's school. Had to ring them to let them know he'd be late due to an appointment, but also to give them his lunch choice. The boy wants cheese salad. Which is basically cheese and salad, right? But he is allergic to cucumbers. So... the salad is pre-mixed with cucumbers. School says "we can pick them out.." Um, no.. because the cucumber has been IN the salad, he could still have a reaction. Hmm So, basically cheese then. Grin They offered a veggie baguette, but he is adamant that no, he doesn't want that, he wants the cheese.

Finally agreed with the school that he can have cheese, chips, and the dessert because they're not sure what else to flaming do, and I can't be bothered to stress over it. He normally has a well balanced diet. I can't imagine one wonky meal is going to plunge him into malnutrition. Grin School agrees, thankfully. The main option is, of course, fish fingers, which he has decided (god only know why) that he does not want to eat for lunch today.

Kids. Are. Fun. Hmm

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 03/10/2014 09:04

Oh, and I cannot send him in with a packed lunch, because he is packed lunch obsessive and will want a packed lunch EVERY DAY if I do that. They get free hot lunch and budget wise, that really helps. Dealing with a packed lunch for ds2 every day will be more expensive and a huge hassle as he changes his mind constantly. And then ds1 will want a packed lunch as well. No no no!! He has even more food issues than ds2, and it took me a full year to get ds1 eating the hot lunches because of his food/sensory issues. I'm not letting that slide now!

dizzyday07 · 03/10/2014 10:47

Still trying to concentrate on the basics when yesterday DH threw a curve ball into the mix and resigned Shock. I know it's been a long time coming but still worrying that he has nothing to go to! He reckons he can contact some interim agencies now and set off down the path of being his own boss as a Management Consultant. Hmm

At the thought of having no money to pay our humungous mortgage I got DD's old clothes photographed so that I can get some sold - though a few pennies from some second hand trousers are not really going to cut it!!

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 03/10/2014 13:49

dizzy oh goodness, that must be stressful for you. Fingers crossed he finds something suitable very quickly.

After ds2's appointment and taking him back to school, I managed to waste a bit of time while grocery shopping at Waitrose by leisurely sipping my (free Grin) latte while browsing all the new JL Christmas stuff that has been put out recently.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 03/10/2014 15:35

Friday's to do
ds to school with added extra bits
work
laundry ds' bedding on to wash
folding
ironing
pack ds' stuff for wkend
long drive
sort out stuff to drop off with charity shop/tip/recycling etc rummage in loft and remove 2 bags worth of stuff
Send emails and do a whole heap of admin type stuff

Urgh, just started thinking about the Christmas plans, there is a lot, a hell of a lot. And only so much time to get all this stuff done.

Stewedcoot · 03/10/2014 16:44

Don't Bitchy, I was thinking myself just now how come I am in exactly the same position as last year with the same amount of decluttering to achieve before Christmas [tired and confused emoticon] Confused Blush

That must be worrying for you Dizzy but here's hoping your dh finds an alternative soon.

Hope your ds survived lunch time OK Alice!

Hope you survived the smoke Pushme and I need to declutter my clothes too. I'm fine with more formal stuff: it's all those soft, worn, comfortable loungey-type clothes that are the problem, although I know Mrs Kondo takes a rather hard line on that sort of thing!

Shock Goth at 12 garlic cloves and 168 red onions!! That's amazing! And good luck present hunting.

Big feathery waves to Gladhoc and everyone else!

Ta da:
morning routine inc dw, wm, and rabbits
stripped 2 more beds
did extra bits of washing up that didn't go in machine
cleaned and tired entire downstairs and replaced hand towels/tea towels etc
quick supermarket shop
bakery run
sewing and natter and lunch with lovely friend Smile
washed yet more ballet kit
washed yet more bedding
gambolled with rabbits Smile
school run
measured dd for clothes
e-mail to dsil

It was an absolutely gloriously sunny day today and I had a lovely time with a friend this morning but feel absolutely cream crackered now. We are just off out on a small expedition so going to post links early and sign off for the night!

Have a great Friday evening everyone!

OP posts:
AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 03/10/2014 16:58

I have a tried and true method of dealing with Christmas "to do" things. I make 3 lists:

  1. Must do.
  1. Want to do.
  1. Would like to do, but lower priority.

Keeps me in focus. Be brutal in making your lists - only put things in the "Must do" list that are absolute essentials.

I find that if I have limited time or resources, then I am less likely to do it all - I will look at my lists and say "okay, this is the most important, I'll focus on this. THEN if I have time, I'll worry about that. But if I don't, I've already deemed it nonessential and it can fall by the wayside without trauma."

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 03/10/2014 17:00

SC and yes, he survived lunch just fine, thanks for asking. Such a silly boy. Grin

Stewedcoot · 03/10/2014 17:00

Baby-step no. 4 for Sat 4th Oct is imo the ignorable one about post it notes

Here it says we are in Zone 1 until the 6th : Entrance, Front Porch & Dining Room here! but I am not sure that is right! Will check! Anyway, if you do zones at the weekend, then declutter in Zone 1 for 15 mins per day!

No mission because it is the weekend.

The daily focus for Saturday is family fun!

The monthly habit for October is getting rid of paper clutter.

For a summary of the above, see the flight plan which should update itself daily.

Can't think straight so please let me know if I have missed out anything/gone wrong anywhere!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 03/10/2014 21:11

Tbh it is more the fact of who, where, when and why... Logistics of extend family/non conventional family etc...

GoingGoingGoth · 03/10/2014 21:12

Dizzy eek!

Successful shopping trip for DD's birthday, as we're 300 miles from the rest of the family, we buy for grandparents as well as ourselves. It sometimes feels like we're going a bit mad, but if it looks like too much I can put some stuff away for Christmas. But we got her this which she's been wanting since last Christmas. It's the only thing she's really asked for.

I've also got a couple of my knitted cowls and headbands dropped off at a local "handmade shop" for sale. She wants me to make more, plus some of my wolf hats and paw-print scarves. I may actually get some sales!

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 03/10/2014 21:12

Ah crap, hit post too soon.

I also use those categories for general life as well as christmas Alice it helps keep expectations and hopes in check to a realistic level.

Swanhildapirouetting · 03/10/2014 21:13

done
bought some new autumn clothes, blackberry forest and golden
fin de siècle top
new jeans

(not very glam all from M & S..other shops too skimpy in cut)

Packed two rucksacks for us both.

printed out various tickets, info and boarding passes

went to Home Ed football with ds2, he had a wonderful time and socialised afterwards playing more football. Met two more new people with sons between 10 and 12.

On the flip side he has been very very all over the place this evening, too excited to settle with idea of going on British Airways tomorrow (he is more interested in airline than the city of destination Confused We usually travel on AerLingus.

Cooked salmon and potatoes and cauliflower this evening

Cleaning lady cleaned kitchen and utility today, and I sorted out the big fridge, and various recycling.

No formal home edding today though. too much sorting to do, and fresh air trumped anything else.
