Heartfelt thanks to Engels (and Bitchy!) for leading the thread throughout September (Sept always being a busy one) despite feeling a bit poorly and despite being pregnant. Hope beneficial effects of injections kick in soon! Thanks Thanks Thanks

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons . Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

Argh! Typed out a post and accidentally closed the browser. Angry

Anyway..

WhoKnows have fun at the Tower. We went years ago and I loved it - fascinating place. I would love to go again, but it will have to wait until the dcs are older.

I've gone through one more box of old papers this morning. (been up for hours as ds1 has been awake since before 4am again.. coffee, anyone? Grin) I have a whole box of old school workbooks for ds1. Seriously, why do they send these home?? Does anyone actually SAVE all of them???

fuzzpig · 26/10/2014 08:05

I've been wondering what to do with all DD's school stuff too. So much of it is just 'meh'

coffeeandcream · 26/10/2014 09:15

Morning fledglings, there was no extra hour for me this morning either, DS bounced out of bed regardless!

Who Knows, we are also going to see the poppies at the Tower in a fortnight, it looks amazing. I love the Tower; to walk in the same places as some of the most memorable people in history gives me shivers!

We have a large family gathering descending upon us at lunchtime, only arranged yesterday Angry. Crisis clean required....

Done
Cats fed
DS breakfast, medicated and half dressed
Dishwasher

To do
Kick DH out of bed
Put away dry laundry
Empty and reload dishwasher
Hoover downstairs, stairs, landing and lounge
Put away all the random crap that finds itself in the lounge but doesn't bloody well belong there!
Make buffet lunch
Sweep leaves off lawn (family want a tour of the garden too Angry )
Shower
Grind teeth whilst MIL inspects the lack of show home standards in our humble dwelling...

Is it too early for gin?

coffeeandcream · 26/10/2014 09:22

On a less stressy note, I love all the Narnia books, TLTWATW is the best one to start with, but I think The Silver Chair, The Magicians Nephew and The Horse and his Boy are for older children as there are some darker, more complicated themes.

And The Hobbit rocks! (Peter Jackson should be shot for what he has done to it [stabby emoticon]) great book.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 26/10/2014 10:29

Which is weird Coffee because it was the film that got ds wanting to read the Hobbit. He loves the book and has read it several times. He is slowly slowly plugging his way through the lord of the rings but is distracted by faster paced and less wordy books (Divergent/Percy Jackson etc etc)

Had a nightmare with the computer yesterday so couldn't get on to mn. However, spent most of the last 48hrs asleep so no real flying unless you count turning several part balls of wool into projects that will be leaving the house in the next few weeks? Also tempered by the fact that the amount that will be leaving is less than what was bought on Thursday Blush

I have also noticed that if my room is not set up just so it has the ability to end up junked 10 times faster. Hmm Needless this is because the room is currently junked Blush

I have put some lively music on, about to grab a shower and then hit the housework. There is an awful lot that is needing doing. Goodness knows what happened last week. I think I must have been feeling particularly shocking as it would appear very little got done of even the most basic routines Hmm I have until 12:30 to get stuff done before I have to go out for the rest of the day, hoping to get loads done.

CallingAllEngels · 26/10/2014 10:43

To Do:

*Interior/homes magazine purge (huge stash)
*Laundry reboot by as many loads as I can get dry indoors on this wet day.
*Mount Ironmore is beckoning - must tackle and then tidy away.

*List some books on eBay
*Write letters outstanding from Dad's funeral
*Write letter/wrap parcel for old employer

*Watch two missed episodes of Downton Abbey
Dinner & kitchen tidy-up/dishes
Contact cousin to reconnect via FB (he has promised me a copy to our branch of the family tree, which includes information on an ancestor who escaped from the Tower of London - is that where you are going WhoKnows
? My aunt and uncle were filling me in over the summer and it sounds sooo exciting!)

NickNacks · 26/10/2014 15:42

Engels how is your pregnancy going? How many weeks are you now? My lovely friend is 10 days overdue and slowly going crazy Smile

I've carried on in the background still Flying, decluttering mainly. My sitting room is stunning if I so say so myself. I have decluttered, including furniture pieces, and redecorated. We just need a new carpet but money wise it will have to wait until the new year now. We only have what's needed, loved and looks pretty. Next room is boys' bedroom and I'm off to ikea in two weeks to get some storage to swap for the old broken stuff they currently have. We're also moving the bedrooms around.
Beef stew is in the slow cooker tonight and dh is due home any minute. Have lovely Sundays evenings all.
waves to everyone

CallingAllEngels · 26/10/2014 15:55

31 weeks nicknacks . 2nd trimester was hard but half term and a course of b12 shots has perked me up. Feeling more prepared for baby and maternity leave though lots of planning (mainly for school) still to do.

Stunning living room sounds good!

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 26/10/2014 16:13

NickNacks Well done on the sitting room. I'll bet you're enjoying it. I still love looking at my living room now that it's redecorated. I've finally decided on what to do in my bedroom, and I'll be painting the boys' rooms this week. Eeeeeek! While they're home from school!!! THIS could be interesting. Grin

I've gotten through more paperwork today - two more bags of shredding out to the rubbish bin, and hopefully one more will be done tonight while I'm watching television after the dcs go to bed. I have a lovely sachet that spices cider, which apparently can be used with apple juice as well (since I have no cider handy), so I may try that tonight - like a warm spiced cider. Smile Yum.

And making pasta for the boys for tea/supper/dinner (hahahaa - covering all bases there!), and brownies in the oven for later. The boys were outside running all over the garden and jumping on the trampoline this afternoon, even though it was kind of chilly out, so here's hoping they'll sleep well tonight. (well, ds2 anyway. ds1 never does - how he survives on such little sleep I will NEVER know - I only manage with loads of coffee!)

Stewedcoot · 26/10/2014 17:01

Afternoon all. We've been out at an agricultural show all day. Saw some fabulous heavy horses.

How are you all doing? Sorry to hear that quite a few mini-fledglings didn't cooperate when it came to lie-ins this morning!

Nicknacks great to have you back! And evidently Flying high too! Congrats on stunning sitting room !

Right, we are ready for our final week of Flying for this month ... .

Baby-step no. 27 for Mon 27th is here. An important one about planning dinner well in advance.

We are in Zone 5 this week: the sitting room here. Declutter for 15 mins in this zone.

The detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here.

Monday's mission (and all the missions for the week ahead) can be found here. Spend 5 mins surveying your sitting room and getting rid of unwanted/unloved ornaments and papers.

The daily focus for Monday is: our favourite home bleugh! (not!).

The monthly habit for October is getting rid of paper clutter: www.flylady.net/d/habits-of-the-month/october/ which Alice is doing very well! Smile

For a summary of the above, see the flight plan : www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-120 which should update itself daily.

Have a productive start to the week everyone!!

Btw Fuzzpig dd has found the book I mentioned, hidden deep inside the warped and wobbly Ikea 'Gorm' that is currently serving as her book case ...

It is called "Hilda Boswell's Treasury of Children's Stories". If you can find a second hand copy anywhere, I bet your 7 yr old would love it. First published in 1971 by Collins (which shows how ancient I am!)

Castlelough · 26/10/2014 17:28

Yes Sc if you google 'escape from London Tower' he comes up! His wife disguised him and smuggled him out.... Wink(after riding all the way from Scotland through snow - pity her name is so dubious; if I had a baby girl she would be an inspirational character to be named after!)

Stewedcoot · 26/10/2014 17:44

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 26/10/2014 18:40

Evening all,

Just back from London, we've had a lovely day. The Tower of London area was absolutely rammed with people, so we decided not to go in today, but had a good long look at the poppies and will come back another time to visit properly. So we had a nice amble back through the City (not an area we go to often) and headed back to Oxford Street / Chinatown / Leicester Square / Trafalgar Square / London Eye, so lots to see and talk about (there was a big Free Kashmir rally going on in Trafalgar Square) and the DCs loved the London Eye. I used to live in outer London and go in frequently, now we are an hour and a half away by train so it's more effort (and considerably more expensive) but we really should go more often.

coffeeandcream · 26/10/2014 18:47
