Heartfelt thanks to Engels (and Bitchy!) for leading the thread throughout September (Sept always being a busy one) despite feeling a bit poorly and despite being pregnant. Hope beneficial effects of injections kick in soon! Thanks Thanks Thanks

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons . Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

Blue really admire you for being a governeur after everything you've gone through but I guess the most effective way to change things (or to at least lobby for change) is from within. Hope it goes well.

Toffee beef stew sounds delicious and arf at kittens traversing keyboard!

Well done wrt decluttering Castle and thanks for kind offer. I'm very, very tempted and I'd absolutely love to say 'yes please' but I have so many patterns here that I've never used and so many books with free patterns in them, that, in the spirit of Flylady (curses) I daren't accept! (Besides overseas postage costs a bomb!) Over to Bitchy ... and/or you may like to try on 'arts and crafts' thread on Mnset. THANK YOU though! Thanks

It's at this point I should perhaps confess to having 25 or so copies of 'Marie Claire idées' by our bed, each with about 10 free patterns in the back! Blush

Baby-step no. 17 for Fri 17th Oct is here. Here it is, the 'setting a bedtime and sticking to it step' that so many of us find difficult!

We are in Zone 3: the bathroom and one other room here . Declutter for 15 mins in this zone.

The detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 3 is here.

Our last mission (for Friday) in the bathroom can be found here. Mopping the bathroom floor and doing a full 27 fling boogie in the other area.

The daily focus for Friday is: decluttering our cars, purses and handbags.

The monthly habit for October is getting rid of paper clutter: www.flylady.net/d/habits-of-the-month/october/ .

For a summary of the above, see the flight plan : www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-120 which should update itself daily.

One more day and it is nearly the weekend! Keep going everyone (even just making a concerted effort for 5 mins makes a difference!

Stewedcoot · 17/10/2014 07:39

Good morning!

Not the best of starts today. DD ill in night. I've had to cancel my sewing pal and lovely cleaning lady. Never mind. Hopefully will spur me on to do some decluttering!

OP posts:
Swanhildapirouetting · 17/10/2014 08:42

Last night I went to bed a bit earlier, and despite my 630 start feel soo much better. So it is as simple as that Blush I have a habit of ferreting around late at night and it really backfires.

SC I'm sorry dd is ill.

today
two children off to school, relatively uneventful, seem to have cracked ds1 shower, and uniform prep and sensible breakfasts. Dd beginning to notice untidy kitchen and saying things like why is everything so messy..to which my response is..because I didn't tidy it...ergo..your room is your responsibility

yesterday
revived sufficiently to go to Morrisons with dd and buy the groceries
watched Educating East End with two cuddly children.
Ds1 doing Music GSCE homework upstairs instead, for once seems to be concentrating..
hung out washing
small steps in right direction.. ds2 remade his bed with clean sheet and unloaded saucepns from dw
ds1 laid table
ds2 put his own fish fingers in oven

Todo
home ed football group
cleaning lady is coming at 9.20
washing
rubbish out
dh is returning at 5pm

so...I have 40 mins decluttering time before cleaner gets here..soo frustrated if she has to clean round the current mess. will tackle hall cupboard so I can put shoes in there at least.. and leave pans and tins to soak in utility room to clear kitchen sink. And I need to put the clothes away on the landing too.

ToffeeWhirl · 17/10/2014 09:00

SC - so sorry your DD is ill. Hope she's better soon. Annoying that you've had to cancel cleaning lady and friend.

Swan - I do the same thing (went to bed at 2am this morning because I was busy writing my blog). It's because it's the only time I get to myself and that's probably true of you too. Am so jealous of you having a utility room, by the way Envy.

Another appointment for DS1 this morning, so a repeat of yesterday, attempting to get him to shower or bath, then to actually get him out of the door. And also meant to be taking the kittens to the vet (they run a Kitten Club every month, where they weigh them, etc., although I always have visions of it being a social club where kittens meet up Grin).

CallingAllEngels · 17/10/2014 09:15

Sorry to hear dd is ill sc . Ds woke us at 1am and promptly threw up so am staying close to sofa today.

feeling tired...good job I'm on half term. Though we have a house full on Sunday for ds's birthday. Dh has to fix the leak weve finally discovered in our central heating over the kitchen which has been affecting one of our walls, and the house is a tip.

It's Dora all the way today and at some point I will get off my behind and do something in the house.
did manage to lean downsta I rs toilet yesterday so one less thing.

fuzzpig · 17/10/2014 09:59

Hi everyone! Sorry to head about ill children :(

ta da
Ordered tesco

to do
Hang out wet washing
Dry clothes away
One more wash load
Clean out bags/purse (glad I've been 'told' to do this!)
27 fling boogie (:o) in DCs' bedroom

I keep trying to add more stuff to the list but no, I'm quitting while I'm ahead!

fuzzpig · 17/10/2014 09:59

Hear not head Blush

Stewedcoot · 17/10/2014 10:05

Thanks all! Waves to Swan Toffee Castle and Engels and everyone else!

[Hands bottle of Dettol over to Engels] Sorry to hear your ds is poorly. Hope he recovers in time for Sunday visits and that you don't succumb! Take it steady!

Unfortunately, there are a lot of these flu-like/ bugs about atm that cause shivers/headaches/dizziness/nausea - loads of friends and colleagues have succumbed here - I am taking zinc tablets!!

DD not feeling too good right now. Shouldn't joke about it but a small voice in the middle of the night said "Mummy, have I got Ebola?" We've kept dd away from a lot of the news reports (Bxls is transport hub for W. Africa) but it's amazing what they pick up from the ether!

She is also v. upset because she wanted to get to school for exchange of bks relating to reading competition (going to see if dh can pop in for her later).

Didn't strictly speaking have to cancel cleaner, but she has been unwell recently, so didn't want to expose her to anything nasty! So just going to potter with dd and try and do a few chores as and when. Fortunately, I already prepped supper yesterday.

Swan glad baby-step no. 17 is helping Wink Also congrats on getting your dc to pitch in!

Toffee hope ds1's appt went/going well and that kittens enjoy their socialising Wink

although to be fair, I wouldn't mind painting it all blue if he would agree to a lighter blue, not the darker blue he wants... maybe I can convince him that lighter blue is nice. Grin

Yes, think easier to update/renew if background fairly neutral and you are just replacing accent bits says woman living in house in worst decorative order known to man

Alice in DS's room we have 2 walls white and two in a colour. Actually we have the same in our room with white/pale blue. I remember that as kids me and my Dsis's wanted My Little Pony Wallpaper but it was $$$ and hideous so we had one MLP wall and the rest painted. Kept us happy and meant that when we realised how awful it was a few years down the line it was only one wall!

Ta da
emailed dh photos and things to print (our printer hasn't been reconnected since the shelf came crashing down a few weeks ago)
ordered my Liz Earle special edition cleanser Smile
hoovered lounge
changed DS's bed
wool wash on
emptied bathroom bin

To do
finish upstairs unpacking
change our bed
tidy downstairs a bit in prep for Sunday
hang up wash when finished and do a bedding wash

DS is currently wearing his Gruffalo suit (I got it as a bday present for him but won't fit for long as the child is MASSIVE!) and watching Thomas the Tank Engine in Dutch.

No more vomit, think it was a one off but he's full of cold and very thirsty (doesn't want to eat much).

Not bothering with supermarket as have to go tomorrow anyway and pick up the cake

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 17/10/2014 12:28

I have lost my cup of coffee :(

CallingAllEngels · 17/10/2014 12:40

Uh oh bitchy

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 17/10/2014 13:44

ok sorry, must ask... LOST your cup of coffee? Confused I mean, tragic in all circumstances, as coffee is gold in this house.... but lost it?

sigh. I have become a Waitrose snob, I think. Ok, perhaps not a snob. But I've been going to Waitrose since this summer, because quite frankly I was irritated with Sainsburys over the comments they made to (and about) my son and his disabilities. So I resolved not to go back there. Aldi is impossible with ds1, due again to his disabilities. And I don't really like to flip flop to different stores all over the place if I can avoid it (plus to some extent how much is it saving £1 if you drive to a completely separate store?) So anyway... shopping at Waitrose. Free latte. Less crowded. Quieter. Yep, I'm hooked. Blush The prices are higher on some things, but for the most part it's relatively comparable to Sainsburys. And it does make me stick to my list more. Grin Twenty lashes with a wet noodle. Shame on me.

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 17/10/2014 14:11

For lost read put it down somewhere and can't remember where and not stumbled across it.

Solution is a new cup of coffee. I am about to do this so i can drink it whilst sorting through the paperwork so can make the important phone calls.
