Heartfelt thanks to Engels (and Bitchy!) for leading the thread throughout September (Sept always being a busy one) despite feeling a bit poorly and despite being pregnant. Hope beneficial effects of injections kick in soon! Thanks Thanks Thanks

If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

Flylady link here.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework, which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons . Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:
(1)No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine
(2)You are never behind just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
(3) It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking lists but don't let that worry you! Do what you can, anything is better then nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders!

Oh and don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey – some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome!

Ah. Chicken cooked. Pumpkin bread cooled. Chocolate cupcakes done and cooling. Now I can relax for a few minutes before off for an appointment.

ToffeeWhirl · 15/10/2014 14:05

Mmm, your cooking sounds delicious, Alice. Re: the melatonin - I have no idea why it's taking so long. I requested a repeat prescription from DS1's psychiatrist at our last appointment five weeks ago and have chased it up twice since then. It doesn't come through the chemist or GP, but from a separate organisation that CAMHS use. Am getting desperate!

DS1's new teacher has been here and she and DS1 got on really well Grin. Am so pleased. She gave him free choice over what to study and he's decided he wants to study Science, starting with the periodic table. I feel really happy that he's getting some proper teaching. Hopefully, it will encourage him to re-engage with education once he gets back to school.

Not a lot of Flying done here this morning, as I spent most of my time working on the solar system model with DS2. Managed to get some washing up done whilst DS1 was with his teacher and DS2 was upstairs having a bit of a sulk over my stars being better than his.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 14:12

Ds1 used to get it prescribed by the paed, but she has turned it over to the GP to prescribe, so I just order it as needed, the chemist picks it up from surgery and orders it in, and I pick it up from chemist. Usually about 3 days from ordering online until getting it at chemist. I just ring the chemist as soon as I put in the online order so they're aware it's been ordered so they can pick it up. I cannot believe you have to wait that long! Can you ask them if your GP can prescribe it for you, since it's an ongoing med that he's been on for awhile?

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 15/10/2014 14:38

When ds used to get it from the pead they used to say order it 6 weeks in advance but would give us 100 doses/script. I would chase it and point out that it was detrimental to his health and ability to cope if he is not sleeping. Does he have the slow release or the one hit variety? (clue with be in the dosage as the slow release only comes in 2mg where as the one hit is variable and general starts dosage wise at 4mg)

I have slept. And now going to shower. I feel like a zombie. A sniffly snuffly scratchy voiced zombie.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 14:57

Ds1 has the liquid melatonin. They tried the tabs but paed wanted him to crush them and chemist refused to fill the prescription if we were going to crush it as it says you shouldn't. I spoke to the GP (who had just taken over prescribing the liquid from the paed a few months previous), who was happy to continue prescribing the liquid if it worked well for ds1, so that's what we do. It was really just the paed pushing the tablets. (cheaper for NHS, I suppose, but she's not the one that has to get through a meltdown every night trying to get it in him Hmm)

So he's on the liquid. Chemist has a 24 hour turn around time for it. That's our small chemist around the corner from our house. The bigger ones (Boots, Lloyds, and such) take up to 1-2 weeks to get it in on order. Go figure. Confused

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 15/10/2014 15:08

A lot of kids have issues with tablets. When ds started melatonin the first time he had capsules and the advice was to empty the contents into jam. He can't have liquid forms of meds though. Luckily this time around he can swallow tablets to it is much easier for all around.

Tbh i think I need something to help with my sleep pattern. It is non existent and I do find it impossible to sleep a lot of the time. Not good when you have fibro and everything gets worse if you don't sleep and it takes you months to recover from one bad night

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 15:20

yeah, I've gone round and round with paed over this. She wants me to up ds1's dosage of melatonin or add the time release capsule (which he won't take in capsule form and refuses to eat any types of foods that you could actually put it in if you opened it upHmm due to sensory issues).

Currently he takes liquid before bedtime, which helps him get to sleep. He sleeps from about 8/9 pm until about 1am consistently. Then from 1am until 4am it's a bit of a crap shoot - he wakes up, sometimes out of bed, sometimes not, sometimes for short periods, sometimes for longer, sometimes for remainder of night . Then usually by 4am he crashes and sleeps until 5am.

So I am literally up and down most of the night, and have been doing this for the entire 8 years of his life. Actually worse when he was younger as it took him HOURS to go to sleep before he was on melatonin. I can sometimes catch a little sleep during the school day - an hour or two here or there as I can around appointments and the like. But he's only just gotten dry at night in the last year - if he is dosed up on meds, I'm concerned he'll sleep through it as he usually gets up to use the toilet during the night. And the wet pyjamas and sheets did a nasty number on his eczema. I'd rather lose some sleep myself (as I'm in the position to catch up during the day if needed) and allow him to function as he obviously needs to, than dose him up to the eyeballs to get more sleep.

I'm a bit Hmm with the paed anyway as she is pushing for Ritalin (can't take due to family history of heart problems, but paed thinks he'll "probably" be fine with it - charming, eh?) for daytime, and more melatonin at night. It sounds like she just wants to turn him into a zombie. Really, how is he ever going to learn to function on his own if he's dosed up to the rafters 24/7? Confused

BitchyTakesOnManagement · 15/10/2014 15:50

Sometimes you have to stick up for him. Despite having the slow release ds still gets up in the night and will happily get up for the loo then wake me up to put him back to bed. I am considering the single hit as well as he has been having more problems getting to sleep and it is noticeably affecting his ability to cope and the number of meltdowns. I don't find ds is a zombie on the meds at all, just that he is more able to cope with life and less likely to go from calm to screaming tempers over the slightest thing. And if i am honest I would rather he control his anxiety with a good night's sleep than have to go on anti depressants. which is the other option for dealing with it. The whole sleeping thing and meds is a proper mine field though isn't it?!

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 16:02

I'm actually more concerned about the possibility that Ritalin could make his heart stop due to a family history of heart problems. Apparently paed thinks it's an acceptable risk. Hmm But I'm just irritated as she just seems to want him medicated 24/7 - Ritalin all day and Melatonin all night IYSWIM. I guess zombie was the wrong word, but I think you understand my frustration.

Stewedcoot · 15/10/2014 16:11

Hmmmm, this morning was a bit stressful. (Thank you dh for not getting dd to sort her own gym kit, or apron, or uniform last night, for not signing her hwk Agenda and for not helping her to weigh out her cookery items for today, despite leaving half of this prepared and writing you a long note) but for managing nonetheless to leave me with greasy baking trays, numerous plates and crockery dotted throughout the house, along with a trail of discarded clothing, plus the form I left specifically for you to fill in Biscuit. Hwr he did feed and water the furries so can't be too cross (plus dd should have been able to sort most of stuff herself but didn't)!

Anyway, just about made it to parish vestiare on time for volunteering slot, did quick supermarket shop, post cookery-class pick-up and having sneered at Flylady for reminding us how to use a calendar, got my come uppance when I realised that I needed to send off my god-daughter's birthday present (fortunately already organised) very urgently indeed. So just having a quick cup of tea and a catch up with thread before heading off to post office before it closes (queues smaller at very end of day).

How have you all been getting on?

Sorry so many of you had fraught evenings (and in the case of Shannara mornings) yesterday trying to settle restless dc.

Toffee, Bitchy and Alice have been discussing sleep meds. Hats off to you all (and others on here) for functioning so well despite having continually broken nights which must be so very draining.

Toffee has been providing post-midnight feasts and creating a model of the solar system. (Sorry to hear about ds1's blood test. If it's any consolation Vit D deficiency is quite common in us city dwellers I think, and easily remedied - over here it's little phials of something called D-cure which you can put in oj and drink (once a month I think). YOu can't taste it.) (And could high white blood cell count poss be in response to flu jab - not sure?) Btw, if he eats broccoli, then it has more iron in it than spinach apparently - if not - Floradix is good (and reasonably palatable). So glad your ds1 enjoyed his teacher's visit and had such a positive start!

Bitchy worked her way through a mahoosive list and has been off-setting the negative effects of paperwork, politics, and sinusitis (hope latter doesn't develop in to anything serious) and zombie-inducing sleep deprivation with hash browns and ice cream! Thanks for kind words [dabs corner of eye with handkerchief] Grin and hope you can catch up on shut-eye tonight!

["My understanding is that if you can hear him snoring, you're not holding the pillow down hard enough."] Grin Alice made me cackle and communed with Sir Alan and has been baking like a domestic goddess! (Hope your sinus headache has cleared too.)

Fuzzpig has been battling illness today (lots of horrible nausea-dizzy bugs going around here at the moment) and has, very wisely, been taking it gently. On the positive side -she has resolved her childcare probs for Sat, been tackling her finances and Flying high! (Glad the system is making a difference!) (And 'ark at you and the stash and dash!! Wink Grin) She is also planning to do some major decluttering with her dh during half term. (Sympathies as I also have two rooms and an entire basement that mimic hoarder-next-door Blush). Suggest poss ring-fencing specific parts of specific days for decluttering with your dh ie Mon, Wed and Friday mornings (or afternoons if dc settle better having gone out first) and then arm yourself with DVDs to keep dc occupied while you do it! Good luck! Think dc (and dh's for that matter) are always more bribe-able amenable to cooperation if they 'know the plan' ie "today is a cleaning afternoon then we going out to have some fun tomorrow" ifyswim! (Now need to follow my own advice Blush.)

Goth tackled a post-parental-visit clean-up (good to hear you all had a fab time!). Arf at year-old jigsaw!!

Shannara had a stressful start to the day but went on to sort yet more birthday/half term and wedding plans (inevitable that Flying takes a back seat for now with all of that to contend with!) Good luck with it Thanks

Poor Pushme has been gamely ploughing on through her list, despite having a dreadful cold. (Hope you feel much better today and you can get the rest you need.)

Coffeeandcream has been preparing herself and her pets for their holidays (glad you managed some much-deserved time-out for yourself!).

Castle chose a propitious moment in which to order custom-made bathroom cabinets (think I will definitely take inspiration from this and go direct to tradesmen by-passing dh; which is obviously where I have been going wrong and where most long hoped for plans vaporise in to nebulous cloud). Wink Hope potentially difficult meeting turned out to be otherwise!

Swan has been trying to incorporate maths activities in to home decorating (argh just had flashback to those sort of real-life-problem maths questions which would fill me with abject fear "if it takes 4 litres of paint to cover 9.5 walls and 3 ceilings, but you have 27 walls and 7.5 ceilings to cover, how many etc" Confused).

SC is feeling a bit haggard!

Have a good evening everyone! BBL!

Having just re-read - apologies for first couple of paras - which seem very trivial in comparison to Ritalin/child med issues Blush

OP posts:
AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 16:17

SC no need to apologise. We all have things that are stressful to us - your stresses are just as important as everyone else's. We are an "equal-opportunity stress" group. Grin

BlueEyeshadow · 15/10/2014 17:37

OK, have tidied up the study a bit so I'm sitting in less of a bomb site. In helping DS2 tidy the boys' room I discovered a whole load of baby jigsaws under their bed so got them out and now got to decide whether to give them away or put them in the loft for hypothetical visiting grandchildren...

Stewedcoot · 15/10/2014 17:47

Grin Thank you Alice but I'm an expert in the 'moaning' of life ... Wink

Chuck 'em Blue! You know you want to! [Says SC who is hanging on to toy cars from her own childhood, dd's toddler trains for visiting dc, and has a 50 yr old toy cat without a face]

OP posts:
AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 19:38

give them to a local nursery. That's what I've done with TONS of perfectly nice toys and clothing that the dcs have outgrown. They were pleased to get them.

Swanhildapirouetting · 15/10/2014 20:04

House in chaos again today [sigh] Dh being away is not doing what it said on the TIN!!! BlushHmm I am soo tired from waking up at 6.30 am that I'm failing to be very incisive. However today I had a long nap so feel a bit more inclined to do kitchen sides..

done
One hour and half counting in church (left ds2 at home as he had a plan to do another aeroplane picture and seemed quite happy)
returned to find he had not been able to manage picture alone [sigh] as he had lost the pencil..
(okay leaving ds in house does not work, will scrap idea of unsupervised 12/13 year old child)
lit fire with ds
read our book
comprehension
aeroplanes
nap
supper (two layered pasta bake)
phonics with ds2
discussed Halloween with dd (a mistake)
wash in
dw unloaded finally
dw reloaded
rubbish out at 6,30am

and no, I did not manage to paint dd's bedroom (I think I fell asleep in her bed yesterday instead Blush

Swanhildapirouetting · 15/10/2014 20:08

Blue my BIL always says if you want a new baby, give away your baby things! As a result my sister, who already has three children, has kept an enormous stash of baby clothes as a prophylactic Confused

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 15/10/2014 20:10

One would think having 3 children already would do the trick. When would you have time (or the energy) to try for another? Grin

fuzzpig · 15/10/2014 20:53

Thanks for summarising our successes, SC, it always sounds so much better when you say it!

I made it through work but only just (it's not a bug, BTW, it's the symptoms of my chronic illnesses) and just did the bare minimum this afternoon of washing uniform. Fuck everything else, frankly!

I like the power of three idea. I'll keep that for bad days :)

Also ring fencing specific times, SC, for half term - that will help. We are starting to book in a few things so I'm determined not to write off whole days - eg if we are going out somewhere in the afternoon then yes we will use the morning for decluttering!

Stewedcoot · 15/10/2014 21:20

Thx Fuzzpig but merely describing what you have all achieved! Oh that's even worse if symptoms recurring - I'm sorry - that must be so hard to deal with. Don't forget to ring fence rest times too!

Grin Alice

Swan Congrats on your long list and arf at prophylactic baby-clothes! Sleeping in the room which is to be decorated is my kind of DIY btw! Grin

Big feathery waves to everyone else!

Baby-step no. 16 for Thurs 16th Oct is here read something from the website (if you can be bothered!)

Just fell over the blasted jigsaws in the dark, so very much inclined to give them away at the moment! Grin (although was Angry when hopping around a moment ago...)

Have also been to Zumba, cooked tea and got the bread machine set up for the morning.

But laundry fail means I've had to sew a name tape in the horrible new academy jumper for DS2. Swore I never would until all his existing jumpers were absolute rags... Same colour as the old one, but with the ugly new logo that was imposed on us not only without consultation, but also after they said they wouldn't change it. :(

fuzzpig · 15/10/2014 22:28

Yes ring fencing rest a good plan too. Especially as I've just arranged two things in half term already Hmm I'll try to make sure they are afternoons only for a start!

fuzzpig · 15/10/2014 22:29

That's annoying about the logo! Uniform changes suck. Expensive.

fuzzpig · 15/10/2014 22:32

I feel really down today. I think I'll try and get some stuff done in the morning and then take myself out for KFC a cheap lunch if I manage a few bits. Otherwise I'll probably spend all day on the sofa.

Castlelough · 15/10/2014 22:48

Haha Sc I think it is the only way forward! Mind you, we had a wobble today when double checking the wooden floors (purchased in June- yes, 4 months ago)... I had pulled quite a few boards (one lot oak, one lot walnut) out of the boxes to admire them in the light of the rooms they would be laid in...and left them there. When the underfloor heating was switched on in August they remained were they were until we discovered today that they were warped badly with rising damp. So, we now don't have enough floorboards to do the 4 rooms we had thought we could get out of our fantastic bargain clearance semi-solid flooring. Only enough to do two with a lot of leftover flooring, but not enough to do any of the remaining unfloored rooms. grrrrrr. It is so irritating as we are only short by a couple of square metres of each type of flooring.

There you have it, self-build house at it's best, and only ourselves to blame Sad.

And need to find replacement flooring for the hall and sitting room while the nice stuff goes into bedrooms Angry.

Oh dear, rant over. On the plus side the doors have all been hung. Grin

Coffee don't be impressed by my piano skills! Blush I have my lesson tomorrow and haven't practised...this is the third week in a row that I haven't practised BlushSad. Life just seems hectic, and I always have some excuse not to.

Rebooting laundry and have done most of the dishes.
