exciting world of bread bins

I've got a pine roll top one. keeps bread lovely and fresh but not very attractive. Friend said you can keep bread fresh in a cotton bag. Is this true? Do you all have bread bins? Are they an absolute kitchen necessity?

Does she mean this one from Lakeland maybe?

JackieNo · 27/09/2006 12:41

Haven't got a bread bin. We only generally use bread for toast, so (heresy, I know) keep it in the fridge.

i've got a lovely brushed steel one from john lewis - made by zack

nailpolish · 27/09/2006 12:43

i keep mine in the fridge too

nailpolish · 27/09/2006 12:44

only because (mainly) it frees up bunker space

milward · 27/09/2006 12:47

I'm never convinced that they do much. We have a 'bread bag' which takes up less space, but not convinced that does much either. Keeps the crumbs in one place!

I really notice the difference in freshness with my bread kept inbread bin vs left out. Maybe I'f I'm really bored I'll do an experiment today & buy 3 bread buns and have 1 in bread bin, 1 in bag & 1 not and see the difference. Can't wait. WIll post reauls. Maybe 4 actually - 1 in fridge too

We keep ours in an old enamel bread bin that used to belong to my Gran -it holds about 2 loaves, not that we ever have 2 on the go but theres usually something like pittas or rolls for DDs lunch box in there too.

MIL has a cotton bread bag for a French stick that, funnily enough, she bought in France -not sure if it works or not though

The one from Lakeland has a plastic liner....so how is that a cloth bag?

monkey · 30/09/2006 09:22

exactly katiemac, I wondered that too, if it's lined with plastic, what's the difference to just shoving the bread in an old carrier bag?

I keep my HM bread in a teatowel - but it doesn't stay very fresh - which is such a waste

Kidstrack · 30/09/2006 09:33

got the cream ceramic one from Argos with wooden lid as wedding pressi, it keeps bread really fresh, but does take up quite a bit of workspace

lynneclynne · 30/09/2006 18:31

I dont have a bread bin...did have but was taken up too much space..so got rid of it,started buying hovis best of both and this stays really fresh no matter where it is!
