Condenser tumble dryer in cupboard under stairs?

Since moving from a house with a vented tumble dryer to a house with no room for any sort of tumble dryer, I've been considering getting a condenser dryer and putting it in the cupboard under the stairs. There's honestly nowhere else where I could put one, short of building an extension to create a bigger kitchen.

Reading some reviews though, I get the impression that these dryers do chuck out a lot of heat and/or steam (something I never noticed with a vented dryer) which would be extremely hazardous, since the cupboard also houses the electricity meter and the fuse board Confused

I'm a bit stuck now. I can't suffer another winter spent air drying clothes all over the house (we have a big enough condensation problem as it is). Do ALL condenser dryers create so much heat and steam when in use? Is it a total no-no to keep one in a confined space?

A condenser drier shouldn't emit steam. That's the point of them.

Mine gets slightly warm, but nothing alarming. If I could fit mine in the CUTS, I would.

Hi,

We have one in our kitchen which does create a lot of heat and steam. If we have the kitchen door shut there's a lot of condensation on to the windows and outside door. Our kitchen is small but larger than a cupboard so am not too sure whether it would work in your scenario.....definitely feel for you, we air dried clothes (and still do to an extent) and had a similar condensation problem for a while.

We had one under our stairs for years and it was fine. When we moved it there wasn't any damp to speak of but shit loads of fluff everywhere!

A condenser dryer isn't working properly if you're getting excess condensation or damp.

Mine doesn't emit steam - I really don't think they're meant to.

Mine doesn't emit any steam, but the utility room gets awful hot and I have to have the extractor fan on.

I didn't think they were supposed to emit steam either, but have read lots of reports saying they can create a lot of condensation if stored in a small room. It's the electrics I'm worried about, obviously.

I have mine in a large hall cupboard - it doesn't emit any steam but I do leave the cupboard door open when it is running. It's been in there three years and no problems with condensation so far.

Mine is in a cupboard under the stairs, beside the fuse box and electric meter and we've had no problems. It gives off a bit of heat but no steam. I just leave the door ajar whilst the machine is running - sorted.

I have idea as I've never owned a dryer but am dreading washing all over the house again this winter. I'm thinking of getting a dehumidifier and putting it on next to the maiden in the kitchen overnight.
I don't even have a cupboard to fit a due! Waahhhh! Sad

Mine is in a cupboard, although not the one with the fuse box. No steam or condensation that I notice; it does give off quite a bit of heat though and I keep the cupboard door open when using it. Was also told to allow an inch or two of space behind it to allow the air to circulate (which made finding a dryer with a shallow depth a bit of a challenge). If you want to/are able to throw money at the problem you could consider a pricey Miele type with a heat pump exchanger; they supposedly give off much less heat.

Thanks everyone, lots to think about! Wish I had the money for a shiny Miele...

Mine is a Hotpoint if that helps. Never had a single problem with it in four years.

Mines a Beko condenser senor dryer. less than £200, automatically stops when washing dry, holds a good load and dries clothes real quick (45 mns or so at the most). Worth every penny ! I'd say go for it, just leave the cupboard door ajar when it's running.

Momagain1 · 01/10/2014 22:26

Mine is in walk-in closet /storeroom. I leave the door open when it is on.

Oh, who am I kidding, our shoes are stored in there too, that door is left open 98% of the time.

Arent there some you can plumb for drainage?
