Getting sick smell out of sofa cushions

Dd was recently sick all over 2 of our sofa cushions. She'd had milk, so it was that horrible milky smelly sick (she's 2, not a baby). I've cleaned it with Vanish carpet & upholstery cleaner, and left it to dry, but it still whiffs when I sit on it. What can I try next?

I can never seem to satisfactorily clean up pet accidents (poo or sick) or children's sick, any tips for particular products?

You can try bicarb or a solution of biological washing powder.

My personal favourites (we have a doddery old dog who has accidents) are enzyme pet stain and odour removing products such as Mr Muscle or Simple Solution from Pets at Home. Just wet the area with the product, blot up any excess and leave to dry. The enzymes are what make the difference and get rid of the nasty niffs.

I'd dump them in the bath with some gentle cleaner (I've been reduced to bubble bath before), and then spin on a low a speed as possible in the washing machine.
Out on the washing line, unless it is chucking it down for as long as you can.

Good luck!

Thanks for the product tips fudge, sounds like I ought to get one of those to keep in the cupboard! Do you think they'd still be ok, given the sofa is a dark, terracotta colour?

Addicted, not sure the covers are washable, do you think that would still be ok? I love the idea of giving them a proper wash, with two dogs & two small children, they've certainly taken a battering!

Mine aren't washable, but were not rescue-able otherwise!
The big ones are foam. I didn't get them in the machine.
The little ones have some sort of wadding in. They don't survive as well, but the covers zip off, so the middles can be replaced from Dunelm or similar if you can't stand it.
But for me, the smell of sick would be worth it.

Yes I agree, the smell is awful, I couldn't have anyone to visit as they are! Will give it a go this week I think.

OP I would take the covers off the cushion pads and treat the cushion pads first. Try the enzyme solution on a hidden area of the cushion cover - e.g. the side where it meets the sofa arm and see if it affects the colour. If not, try it on the smelly areas of the cover. If it does affect the colour of the cover then try sprinkling bicarb on the cover, leave 24 hours, give a good airing (outside on the line if possible) and see how it is. I'm guessing the smell has permeated the cushion pad.

Thanks fudge, that makes a lot of sense, I hadn't even thought about it going into the cushion pad! Obvious really. I might give the cover a cool wash in the bath, can't see what harm that would do.
