Toilet cleaning question (sorry gross)

This is for my Dad's house. Sadly he has dementia, is at home with my bro who does minimal tidying (he has his own issues with mental ill health). Anyway I visit fortnightly and like to do some cleaning every time I go. Prior to Dad's diagnosis he was a borderline hoarder, so you can imagine the state the place is in (it's actually better now than it has been, i must have gradually removed a skip's worth of junk and he has daily carers, but they don't have time to do in depth housework).
Anyway (rolls sleeves up , deep breaths) I want to clean the toilet but so far it's toilet 5, me nil. It is gross. I have tried pouring bleach in, leaving 30 mins then flushing (minimal impact). I have gloved up, scrubbed: minimal impact. There's limescale, there's old poo I can't shift (sorry) and it is just revolting.
Any suggestions? And sorry this is such an unpleasant one.

Coke?

chocolatespiders · 28/09/2014 14:02

Having you got limescale remover? If not coke works.
Then get a nail brush and scrub.
Could try white vinegar

I will try the coke. Is diet coke best or does it not matter? Do you pour on, wait a while and scrub? How does it work?

As long as he hasn't got a septic tank, try Harpic toilet cleaner www.harpic.co.uk/products The power plus one. Leave it for as long as possible and scrub.

30 minutes isn't long enough to leave the bleach. Use a whole bottle of extra thick bleach, cillit bang is my final resort brand, and leave it for 8 hours at least. That should get rid of surface dirt. Pour it in by squirting it up round the rim concentrating it on the areas of the rim above the solids you want to remove. Sorry for the revolting detail. For limescale caustic soda and/or pumice stone will work. Very nasty stuff so you need to don protective clothing. Do not use the caustic soda any time near when you use the bleach. I think you need to try to get your dad and brother out the house so you can do a gut and a proper clean.Local estate agents or solicitors should be able to point you in the direction of commercial cleaners that will do a deep clean and clear out at reasonable cost. Try social work for respite care for dad and perhaps your brother could have a holiday staying with you or other family member. They cannot manage with your once a fortnight visits and I would be raising this with social workers too. You have my sympathy. Spent a lot of time cleaning up for those who cannot and very upsetting.

Try 2 litres of hot water mixed with half a bottle of white vinegar and a tub of bicarb of soda. I generally use a cloth to slop it all over the outside of the loo and around the seat and bowl then pour the rest into the bowl and leave for a good few hours.

Not sure if it will hep the lime scale but very good for deodorising

I've heard denture cleaning tablets are good.
But you need to be leaving them for longer than 30 mins.

A poster on a previous thread on this topic recommended citric acid crystals that you can buy in Wilkos. Push the majority of water past the u bend and sprinkle into citric acid crystals and leave overnight. I did this with a toilet that had very stubborn limescale stained a delightful shade of brown. Next day the limescale had literally fallen off in a big pile in the toilet and a couple of flushes it was gone. In Wilkos it's quite a small box and I had to get help from the staff to find it.

Thanks everyone and especially Dinah. It has been hard indeed, mum died 20 years ago, Dad has always had a remarkable talent for messing a space up, and as dementia set in it became quite awful ( if I had a PC I d insert the emoticon of the person with raised hair screaming). So it became my responsibility by default and had me in counselling for nearly 2 years. We tried settling dad into a care home but he went into meltdown and I was told the staff couldn't cope. The only way he'll leave ( even for respite) would be through sectioning, and I don t want to put him through that, not yet anyway.
I have some experience of caustic soda as I make all my own soaps. I have safety goggles, so maybe that would be an option. The citric acid might the one to try 1 st I guess, there s a Wilko in his town so I'll do that and if it doesn't work I'll escalate to caustic soda. I also take the point re needing longer, I could stick the product in when I arrive and do the final clean before I go, usually about 7 hours.

Just get Harpic and make your life a little simpler. It works. Take care all. Smile
