Getting black mold out from the inside of bath toys - can it be done ?

I've neglected the tub of bath toys and now need to start using them again.

What will shift the black moldy lining that seems to have built up inside the lovely set of ducks, bearing in mind there's just a small hole in their bottom for access (just big enough to squirt fluids in and out of).

Please advise me otherwise a load of bath toys are destined for landfill.

I've never managed it. They get put in the plastic recycling and replaced when they get disgusting. All the water needs squeezing out after each use but it inevitably gets forgotten.

Soak them overnight in diluted Milton fluid. You'll need to squeeze the toys so that they take in some of the solution and squeeze it out again in the morning. It will be full of black crap.

What I do now is if we get new bath toys is to squirt some super glue into the hole and water never gets in again. I've never been able to totally clean out toys and just slung them in the end

I've tried soaking in Milton overnight Veruca - just doesn't seem strong enough. - am tempted to try bleach and then to rinse very very throroughly.

I can remember putting a whole load of bath toys into a hot wash in the dishwasher. Not sure that'd solve the problem here though as the mould is inside. Tbh I'd throw them away. Lots of germs lurking in that mould I think.

Don't bother, you will never get rid of it. Chuck them in the bin then user the superglue trick on the new ones. Or use a set of those ikea stacking cups in the bath, they won't get moldy.

WanderingTrolley1 · 27/09/2014 16:17

I'm not duress there's an easy way to get rid of it. Mine go in the plastics recycling.

MokunMokun · 27/09/2014 16:34

I just buy cheap ones and chuck after about 6 months.

Give it a bleach enema! Seriously a much stronger bleach/water ratio than usual, squeeze the toy to fill it with the bleach solution, leave it overnight - rinse it out with as hot a water as you can manage and do it again if necessary.

I used to do this whenever they needed it and didn't have to bin anything until outgrown.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 27/09/2014 17:17

I'm with lavender with the "bleach enema" (I'm so stealing that btw Grin) before leaving overnight I suck some bleachy water up give the toy a bloody good shake/bash on the sink, squirt the bleachy water out and repeat (with finger over the hole unless you want bleach sprayed all over your bathroom!)

Then when toys are totally knackered/having to bleach more regular they get binned.

fairisledog · 27/09/2014 17:18

Bleach enema it is the lavendersun

I really don't want to chuck them all away as some are part of a lovely and treasured Winnie the Pooh playset that fits on the side of the bath and you need the right sized figures to go in the various activities.

Will hone my enema skills on the ducks first before I try the pooh set.

I use dettol mould & mildew spray as the enema - works well.

bonzo77 · 27/09/2014 20:46

I do the bleach enema with neat bleach. Big bottle for about £1. Fill the toys and lie them on one side for a few hours, then rotate to lie in the other side for a few more before emptying and rinsing. Make sure all the water is squirted out after each bath, it means they get mouldy less quickly.

Princesspond · 30/09/2014 21:50

I've used mould and mildew remover and squeeze, fill, shake, squeeze repeat. Quite satisfying watching all the black slime come out. But I have since had a purge and chucked them and only consider open bath toys that can't fill with mould. Good tip re superglue though!
