Condensing tumble driers..

Any recommendations ? Or are the regular vented types better ?

We have to have a condenser in this house as we've nowhere to vent one. We had a vented dryer at the old house. The condenser is ok, but it gets a lot hotter than the vented dryer and tends to get a build up of steam in the drum, which can cause some things to shrink. It also takes a lot longer to dry than the vented one.

We used to have a basic vented Bosch dryer - just a timer and 2 heat settings. That would have most things dry in 50 minutes, but our new Miele condenser takes a lot longer, even though it gets hotter.

I would have preferred to stick with a vented dryer, but the condenser is better than nothing at all if you can't vent it.

I've been trying to figure out if we could connect the vent into the downstairs cloakroom venting - would need a one way valve sort of thing otherwise the toilet would steam up....

I am very pleased with my John Lewis condenser dryer. No problems with steam or damp.

LadySybilLikesCake · 18/09/2014 21:19

I have a Candy, I've had it for 6 years and have never had a problem with it (touch wood).

ShoeWhore · 18/09/2014 21:36

Mine's great, it's an AEG. Have had it 10 years and had a (not massively expensive) repair done last year - repair man recommended Bosch. It's still going strong btw.

May09Bump · 18/09/2014 21:40

Had my condenser AEG for a year now and can't fault it. It's in a basement and we have no dampness or steam .

Follyfoot · 18/09/2014 21:42

We've also got an AEG (had it for 5 years now), its brilliant and no dampness at all.

ShoeWhore · 18/09/2014 21:45

Should have said - repair man said AEG and Bosch v similar but Bosch slightly easier and cheaper to repair. Hence he recommends Bosch.

I have a bosch condensing tumble dryer and I love it! There is a 40 min quick dry, I dry all my clothes in it and nothing has shrunk, its easy to empty and clean.

We have a miele and love it.

No vent, less of a fire risk (apparently) and I use the water on the garden so green too. G

CillaBlacksOrangeBouffant · 18/09/2014 21:52

I have a condenser and it gets a load dry in about 80 mins. I've not noticed any of the issues pp have mentioned. Much prefer it to the vented one I had before

FrostNixon · 19/09/2014 10:18

I have a Siemens model. It was the Which? Best Buy about five years ago.
It was very expensive at the time - almost £1000. But it came from John Lewis with an excellent warranty. Never had a problem with it. Very cheap to run. Good design.

I read a lot of scare stories about them, and had a few tradesmen telling me that it would ruin my house.

Technology moves very fast. Would recommend.

madamginger · 19/09/2014 10:24

I have an indesit one. I love it. My last one lasted 6 years when the heater went and I bought the same one again. It was £200 from tesco.
My mil has the same one and hers is nearly 9 and going strong, albeit getting less use than mine in as a family of 5.

AnnOnymity · 19/09/2014 10:24

We have a Siemens one too. Excellent and as good as a condenser.

didireallysaythat · 19/09/2014 10:40

Sounds like I should look up Bosch condensing ones (not sure I have a miele budget). Thank you all

I have a beko condenser and have no complaints here. Dries dead quick.

Sizzlesthedog · 20/09/2014 21:14

My old condenser dryer has come to the end of it's life. I need a new dryer and could do with recommendations.

I had to empty the filter out and jet wash it to get the fibres out every month or so. Such a palaver. Do condenser dryers still need this doing? I don't mean the lint collector, this was a big section of the dryer underneath that came out.

Monica101 · 20/09/2014 22:08

I have a samsung heat pump condenser. One of the cheapest to run, I think around 20p an hour. It's great and has not made a dent in the electricity bill. It was about £700 6 months ago.

emsyj · 20/09/2014 22:20

I have fairly recently bought a Bosch condenser dryer (Exxcel 7 according to the front panel, just been in kitchen to check the model number). It was quite expensive as it's a fancy heat pump model with super energy efficiency but it is AMAZING - wish I'd bought it years ago.

Previously we had a Miele and it was a big pile of shit. We had the thermostat replaced FIVE times in 2 years and still Miele hotly denied that there was an intrinsic fault with that model even though there were pages and pages of forums all over the internet discussing this EXACT fault with this EXACT model. Hmm They were so fucking obnoxious to deal with that I will NEVER buy another Miele appliance as long as I live. I tweeted them with my complaint and they replied asking for my number so they could resolve things and then never bothered to contact me. Utter utter utter shite customer service. It's a shame because we have a Miele washing machine and dishwasher in both our own house and the house we rent out and none of them have ever (touch wood...) given us a moment's trouble. My DMum has a Miele washing machine that she has had in constant use for at least 15 years with never a single fault - but their customer service if something does go wrong is, frankly, shocking.

Sizzlesthedog · 21/09/2014 09:18

So it seems a heat pump one is the way forward. They are a bit ££ than I wanted to spend. I will look at the ones you recommend. Thank you.

My condenser drier is a Beko. I got that particular one after a recommendation from someone else who had one and liked it. I'm very happy with it, and generally it runs at least once a day.
