Rust (?) marks on laminate worktop - and rust on hobs while I'm at it!

Ages ago, someone left a couple of tins on a damp laminate type worktop, and it left 2 dark circular marks on the surface. Tried all kinds of cleansers but can't shift it.

The same someone constantly left wet-bottomed saucepans on the electric hob (solid type) and most of the hobs have developed a lovely layer of rust too.

Is there anything that will get those marks off? We're renting, and the oven came with the house so want to clean them up as much as possible. Thanks for any advice.

get a small plastic bottle of Jenolite acid rust remover from Halfords or other motorists shop. no other rust treatment or paste will do.

Put on your rubber gloves, goggles, put a bucket of cold water and a sponge handy to wash away any drips or splashes before they eat holes in your skin, clothes or eyeballs.

Put a couple of layers of kitchen roll on the stains, and drip the Jenolite so the roll becomes wet and clings to the surface (the roll will stop it running off and will keep the surface wet).

Leave it ten minutes, throw the acid roll into the bucket using your rubber gloves and sponge the surface off. The mark should be gone or reduced. You can do it again if necessary. You can use the same method on plates with rust stains.

Put the remaining acid in a place where no-one can touch it, or dilute with lots of water and flush away.

...and if your hob is old type with iron disks that heat up, you can polish off surface rust or grime with a green pan scourer and a drop of cooking oil. It will leave a paste of dirt, rust and oil, which you can polish off with kitchen roll. As long as you polish it away, it does not matter if there is a slight sheen of oil on the iron plate, it will burn away next time the ring is used.
