hoxtonchick · 25/09/2006 09:59

yep.

sorrell · 25/09/2006 09:59

Yes.

JackieNo · 25/09/2006 10:01

Definitely yes if they're just cotton - might not be completely ideal if they're poly/cotton - they would probably survive, but might go a bit bobbly.

Aero · 25/09/2006 10:01

Excellent. Normally just do 40oC, but they just looked grubby when I changed them last night and I want them to 'sparkle' lol

Thank-you.

They will be fine, unless they are silk, nylon or satin

Aero · 25/09/2006 10:06

Well, they're in now, so fingers x'd in a while they'll look a lot better.

They may bobble if they're poly-cotton, as Jackie said - it depends on the quality (I have some very cheap ones and they bobbled at 50 )

How about just using a scoop of Oxyclean in with them?

UrsulatheSeaWitch · 25/09/2006 10:06

Too late

ohbother · 25/09/2006 10:07

you're meant to wash sheets at 60 to kill dust mites

tissy · 25/09/2006 10:11

if you want to kill dust mites, you need to do them at 60 degrees, but if you're not allergic, then no need! Think of the waste of energy!

ohbother · 25/09/2006 10:13

ooh er tissy

I was just saying it's safer to wash a bit higher; dh does have allergies so ner

Aero · 25/09/2006 10:18

Actually - it's not the dust mites - it's sweaty dh!! The sheet looks grubby (his side!) I don't consider it a waste of energy if I'm only doing it the once. I've never washed anything at 90oC before in my life). I have no idea why, but they've never looked grubby and sweaty before. Like I said, I usually wash everything at 40oC, including sheets!

tissy · 25/09/2006 13:02

apologies if I've offended anyone!

I read ob's post as meaning that you should wash sheets at 60 degrees !

I have washed sheets at 90 myself, btw(but felt guilty about the waste of energy), but didn't notice any improvement over the 40 degree wash

NomDePlume · 25/09/2006 13:03

Are they done yet ?

Aero · 25/09/2006 13:11

Sorry tissy - I was a bit short there!

They're done - yes. They look ok, but no big difference over 40oC as far as I can see - they're in the drier now. They're pretty old, so maybe an excuse to buy new sheets methinks??

You could use some of that Glo-White stuff - not tried it myself, but have heard good things about it.

JackieNo · 25/09/2006 13:15

er - that's assuming they're white, obviously.

NomDePlume · 25/09/2006 13:16

GloWhite, that's the stuff I use, not Dylon.

Aero · 25/09/2006 13:19

Well, they're a very light cream (or at least they were!!) I doubt glo-white'd make them any worse than they are now!

OP posts:
Sheila · 25/09/2006 15:06

Never had any luck with glo-white myself - see my thread on grey sheets that used to be white!

Aero · 25/09/2006 16:51

Having dried them, the white sheet looks much better than I first thought. Worth it I think. It's the duvet cover that's cream Somehow the sets have got mixed up. The cream duvet cover has a cream sheet to match and the white sheet goes with a pretty blue and white duvet cover - how they've got mixed up I don't know, but at least they all look clean now.

I did a white wash at 90 degrees last week (son's white school shirts had starte to look grey) and added a tablespoon of that ecover noble safe bleach powder - and everything came out looking wonderful. Again I hardly ever wash that hot - feel too guilty!

cadbury · 25/09/2006 17:41

are yoiu going to do mine tomorrow, oh queen of the bedding laundry?

Aero · 25/09/2006 17:44

lol cadders!

OP posts:
cadbury · 25/09/2006 17:46

I wasn't kiding actually

Our sheets really need changing - I think our dh's must go rolling in something yucky as I have the same problem with my sheets!
