how do you clean your mattresses?

What do you do when wee or sick gets on a mattress? Always wondered. scrubbing the surface with soapy/bleachey water is the best I can come up with but it seems a bit like I'm doing it for show. I mean it can't really have much of an effect can it?

Get a nice £5.00 plastic cover sheet from Ikea, that goes under the covers so you don't have to ......

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 24/09/2006 22:40

what do you put on top of it? sleeping on plastic can be really grim.

what I meant is plastic plus a sheet is grim, didn;t think you made the kids sleep straight on the plastic.

wee should be cleaned off with a solution of white vinegar and water, and you should use a mattress prtector. i don't use a plastic one just a thick wadded cotton one .

we've got a thick wadded cotton one but stuff can soak through. and sometimes it's in the wash.(when you say "should" do you mean it's in The Rules?)

The trick is to pick up the mattress immediately and lean it so the stain is on the underside and doesn't soak through so deeply.

alexsmum · 25/09/2006 09:52

it is actually!!!!!!! there is a book called oh i don't rmemmebr , it is something like the rules! and it reckons you s'should' have mattress proctectors and pillow protectors and duvet protectors and all manner of protection ware!!!
maybe a big protector for the entire bedroom and then you have to go to bed wrapped in clingfilm.!!!
sorry at the way that was written-it was late!

I use our steam cleaner w/the upholstery attachment.

kids beds have a waterproof cover (sort of toweling backed with soft plastic, then a padded mattress cover ( and when they were small I used to use a folded sheet as well, under the padded cover - sort of like a draw sheet)and finally a sheet on top.

If the wet/ were sick I could strip off as many layers as necessary and replace

Tutter · 25/09/2006 09:58

i use mattress protectors - got ours from debenhams

iota · 25/09/2006 10:02

waterproof, but comfortable

hana · 25/09/2006 10:05

have also always used mattress protectors on all beds - and pillow protectors as well - but they are just cheapy pillowcases and I put the nicer ones on top

iota · 25/09/2006 10:07

got mine from john lewis

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 25/09/2006 10:46

god I'm awful. I have failed to adequately protect the mattress. but given that fact, how do I clean it?

I'd do slightly soapy water, then rinse with water and vinegar, dry and leave it to air well
