& they are still going strong; whereas the ones bought about 10 years ago are dying

So are Christy towels still wonderful? and should we buy them as the wedding ones are so great still?

I just noticed tonight that one of the christy towels I got 11 years ago is beginning to unravel.

wingcommandergallic · 13/09/2014 22:32

I got some Christie towels for my 18th birthday. Still going strong.

KatyMac · 13/09/2014 22:35

Maybe the quality has dropped how old are you wing

wingcommandergallic · 13/09/2014 22:37

Almost 40.Shock

KatyMac · 13/09/2014 22:38

So our towels were made at the same time as yours (ish)

Lonecat's are more recent....the company could have started using worse material or processes......hmm we need a bigger sample size

You were given towels for your 18th birthday???

stealthsquiggle · 13/09/2014 22:46

I still have towels which have my fathers school nametapes on, which makes them somewhere between 55 and 60 years old, and still looking good. We have much newer towels which have given up.

Trouble is, any towel which has proved it's durability is going to be old - so how are you going to tell which are the best brands to buy today Confused?

KatyMac · 13/09/2014 22:49

That is what worries me

DP's grandparents ran a hotel that they sold in the late 1960's. Some of the linen came down to us. Easily spotted as it's monogrammed with the hotel's initials.

I finally demoted the last of the towels onto dog duties only two years ago!

I've got some christy towels that are still going strong at least 20 years down the line. I've also got some fenn wright mason ones that I got from TK Maxx about 10 years ago that are still doing really well, even better I suspect that the christy ones were doing at 10 years as the FWM ones were even thicker to start with.

And they are still doing the same style of towel by FWM in TK Maxx these days - although the colours are different, it's a simple plain towel but with three relatively thin lines of webbing rather than towelling as decoration at each end (whereas my christy ones have one much thicker band of the non towelling bit at each end).

zipzap · 13/09/2014 23:05

Oh and I also have some towels that I took away to school with me which also have name tapes on still, and are still going strong. Which makes them well over 30 years old!

I also have my duvet sets from when I was little - which also came away to school and uni with me. One of them was a very vivid pinky purple maroony 70s flowery number - first year at uni not a drop of wine got spilt on it, despite it being the colour of a red wine stain so it wouldn't have been visible, also being old so it wouldn't have mattered either. Roommate had been bought a brand new white and blue striped duvet cover which she adored and wanted to keep nice - had wine stains on it within the first week and many more beyond; by the end of the first year my old duvet cover looked in a much better state than hers did!

wingcommandergallic · 13/09/2014 23:14

I was going away to uni and being the practical type, I asked for useful stuff.

So I need some people with 10yr old Christy Towels to see how they are lasting - as it might just be that Lonecat is hard on them or washes them differently Wink or it might be that 10 yr old Christy towels are not as good quality as 20 yr old ones

Maybe I should try & buy some 20 yr old towels Wink?

I have got 12 year old Christy towels that are still going strong unlike the Debenhams ones we got at around the same time (all wedding presents). We got some more Christy towels to replace the Debenhams ones a couple of years ago and they have so far been fine, although they say to only wash at 40deg and I haven't dared try them at 60deg.

TheFairyCaravan · 14/09/2014 11:40

We've still got some John Lewis ones from when DH joined the RAF almost 28 years ago, and from when we got married 20 years ago.

The ones we have bought since from JL and M&S haven't lasted as well!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/09/2014 12:57

I have a set of John Lewis towels from 20 years ago, used every day and only the bath sheet is just starting to look thread worn, the rest are in perfect condition. I'm going to replace with JL again.

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 14/09/2014 12:59

Do people still give towels for wedding presents?

Jbck · 14/09/2014 13:04

I have a Christy set from July 2000, still look brand new but not used terribly often but I mean look brand spanking new.

DelGirl · 14/09/2014 13:14

I have christy towels that are 14 years old, no difference in them from day 1.

emsyj · 17/09/2014 21:02

I have some Christy towels that I got from the outlet village before DH and I moved in together, so would have been around 2003? They are completely fine and look the same as the day I bought them. I'm contemplating getting some bath mats and a dressing gown from the Christy website as they have quite a good selection in the 'Sale' section with a great discount.

dontmesswithmytutu · 17/09/2014 21:41

Our christy towels are approx 10 years old, daily use, still fab quality. Is this towel crisis covering up you missing your dd katymac?! ??

BeCool · 17/09/2014 22:46

I have 2 large cotton/linen towels I brought in a John Lewis sale in about 1997 - they are still going strong, and I've used them constantly as they are my fav's, although the colour is a bit faded now (put it was pale pink to start with so not massive change).

KatyMac · 18/09/2014 07:39

Not exactly but instead of hanging up 3 towels - we need to hang up just 2.....which got me thinking

OP posts:
evertonmint · 18/09/2014 09:41

My Christy ones from about 12 years ago still look good.

I actually still have some 19yo debenhams ones that faded but are still fluffy so I dyed them and they're still in use looking new.

minkah · 18/09/2014 12:55

Don't they get pulls on them?

Mine get to look tatty after a couple of years.
