Mandolin (the vegetable slicing type) - worth the cupboard space?

That's it, really. I know it's not much cupboard space, but my cupboards are very very full...

If you have one, how often do you use it and what for? So far I am thinking dauphinoise (sp?), raw carrots just for a change from grated, courgettes for grilling. What else?

P.S. I don't have a food processor and definitely don't have room or ££s to get one.

I have one. Almost never use it except for when I make scalloped potatoes as it is the only way I have found to get them thin enough. Not really a "must have" kitchen utensil IMO. Especially if you are short on space.

I have been reassessing my kitchen space. I have one, am a reasonably adventurous cook but have never used it in 20 years. So I'm chucking it Smile

It will have the pads of your fingers off if you don't use the guard! They are evilly sharp. But they do slice very thin, as above for dauphinoise, and since they just go in a drawer probably worth having around. I haven't got one any more, neither do I have fingerprints..

I make dauphinoise with potato and parsnip. The loss of cupboard space is worth it just for that alone!

CecyHall · 12/09/2014 19:53

Yeah I stopped using mine after I sliced my thumb tips off three times- the guard never let me get close enough to do what I want. It was good but so sharp!

I have one.

I slice potatoes, and cucumber normally with it. Nothing else really tbh.

Bloody vicious though.
