can you buy a decent bagless vacuum cleaner for under £50?

I have an upright vax and I hate it. As a result I hardly ever hoover. We bought it for £60 when we moved into our house almost 4 years ago and to be fair to it, its very powerful and works well, its just a b*gger to push/pull and I don't like uprights. I thought at £60 it wouldn't last long and would just get us through 'for now' and so would just wait until it gave up and then buy a decent one.

Anyway, its still going strong but I want a pull-along instead. We are not great for money at the moment but need one that I am inclined to use more often now that we have DS as its so much more necessary!

Any recommendations?

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. After weeks of trawling the Talk boards, talking to parents and researching bestsellers, here are our trusted reviews to help you find the best cheap vacuum cleaner on the market.

Hope this helps! Flowers

No.

Why do you want bagless?

BauerTime · 11/09/2014 10:41

So I dont have to buy bags Grin

No real reason I suppose just seems easier

low-priced vacs are not usually very good. The modern white or silver bags are very good at collecting fine dust rather than blowing it out of the exhaust, and do not clog as easily as paper bags. I get mine online by the dozen.

Opinions differ, but I (and Miele) reckon bags give better performance. Mr Dyson disagrees.

I just had a look at "Which" and starting with the best cleaners, the lowest priced best buy is:

Samsung VC21F60JDDR £79.99 which scores higher than some vacs at three or four times the price, including Henry, Hoover, Vax, some Miele and some Bosch.

the Hoover TCP2011 £64.99 is the next cheapest, and nowhere near as high-scoring.

Then the Russell Hobbs 18376 £49.99 which scores very low.

Thanks piglet. I dont rate the Dyson at all tbh.

I'm not much of a hoover connoisseur and hadn't given much thought to the bag thing apart from that with a bagless you just pop open and tip in bin after every use. I imagine with a bag you have to wait till its full and then replace?

I'm not too fussed though tbh and just want a cylinder one that has good suction. Might just spend the extra and get a Henry. Not everyone's cup of tea I know but remember them fondly from chambermaiding days

the Samsung scored much better (80%) than the Henry (60%), as well as being cheaper.

The top-scoring Mieles (it varied by model) scored 82%

I do use a canister vac myself for dirty jobs, so I see the appeal of a Henry.

Are you saying my house is dirty Piglet? Wink

I think id go with personal experience and pay the extra £20 for a Henry over a Samsung. Only because I know that a Henry could do the job whereas id be taking a risk with a Samsung IYSWIM. Plus my friend had a Samsung that didn't last very long so im kind of put off.

I think ill invest in a Miele in the future when I can afford to spend more but for now I want something cheap-ish.

I bought a reconditioned Vax (directly from the factory I think) from ebay about a year ago. It cost me about 40 quid and works brilliantly! Before this one I had two Miles, both bought from a shop and both of which started to break (hose splitting, wheels falling off, etc.) after about a year.
I bought the ebay one as I decided that if I was going to have to buy a new hoover every year or so there was no way I was going to be spending stupid amounts of money on one.
FWIW we have animals and a combination of wooden floors and rugs and the Vax does a fab job :)
