We have a cupboard full of plastic containers. It's an absolute mess and it's almost impossible to find any lids. What do sensible people do? We don't have any more kitchen space or I'd put lids in a separate drawer. What should I do - short of buying more containers to put these containers in!!!!

keep six and bin the rest.

flashheartscanoe · 10/09/2014 18:17

In our house they dont go in the cupboard until they have a lid on.
You need another place for ones without lids or loose lids. If they dont have a match after a week or so it goes in the bin.
Works well.

AwkwardSquad · 11/09/2014 19:49

I bought a container to put the containers in - the little fiddly ones, anyway. The others are stacked by size and any that are missing a bit or are crappy get chucked.

Oh god, I'm commenting on Tupperware. Kill me now.

NormHonal · 11/09/2014 19:53

Chuck some out, and then find a plastic box/crate that slides into the kitchen cupboard in question and bung them all in there.

May09Bump · 11/09/2014 22:32

Just crated mine in the cupboard - two boxes, one for freezer meals and another for school /camp Tupperware & water bottles. Now for the rest of the house :) Lego sorter next!

calendula · 12/09/2014 10:28

My mum has all the lids in 2 narrow wire basket-thingies screwed to the inside of the cupboard door. Seems to work well.

I have one deep drawer with two baskets inside for Tupperware cr*p. One for bigger boxes and one for small + the lids. What doesn't fit goes in the bin.

LionWings · 12/09/2014 10:43

I've got some of these Rubbermaid ones. They're different depths but the big ones are all the same size and the small ones. So only two stacks of lids and two of containers.

LionWings · 12/09/2014 10:52

More reviews (but for a different set) on the US Amazon site.

starfishmummy · 12/09/2014 13:43

Mine are in a box...I have loads.a similar size so they won't nest. I keep thinking that I will get a nesting set instead.

CheshireSplat · 13/09/2014 08:26

Thanks everyone. Looks like I need to buy some big ones then!!! And Awkward, yes, sorry, but it could be worse you could've started a thread on Tupperware.... And spelt avalanche incorrectly!

Every so often, I have a sort out and make sure that every box has a lid. Then I am ruthless ( unusual for me!) and chuck all the mismatched items. I usual store them with larger ones inside smaller ones, and lids stacked underneath.

I do like buying them, though...

treaclesoda · 13/09/2014 08:36

In ye olde days, real Tupperware used to have a little lip on the edge of the round container lids that allowed you to hang them on a special Tupperware rail. Those were the days.

As for keeping six! I have about 20 or 30 of the things and I still run out sometimes! Grin

cleanmachine · 13/09/2014 08:44

Store them with lids on inside each other. I bloody love tupperware but there's not a week goes by when a lid is not lost. Tupperware lids are the 21st century mystery replacing missing socks. It's totally bizarre.

TheLovelyBoots · 13/09/2014 12:52

I keep 4/5 in the back of a cupboard for sending home leftovers with people - assembled with a lid on top - and stack them up neatly.

I keep my operational tupperware in the front, its nests into itself.

hiimangelafernandez · 13/09/2014 13:56

I stack all my Tupperware inside each other without the lids on a bottom shelf. Then use an old plate rack to hold the lids on the top shelf.
Small lids go in the front section, getting bigger towards the back. Works really well, not had to tidy the cupboard for ages now.
Just select box and lid!

alemci · 13/09/2014 14:07

you can get replacement lids for real tupperware. mine is all over the place too. I need to tidy cupboard out.

BrianButterfield · 13/09/2014 14:08

I've just brought in a "no nesting" rule - it gets stacked with the LID ON. No lid = no home. I have much less but it's all useable. Two big salad boxes with compartments, two medium square ones, three round ones and a load of tiny boxes to go inside lunch boxes. All lock and lock and all with lids.

Littlef00t · 13/09/2014 14:16

I bought two of these (1 waiting in the wings) - 17 piece Tupperware for £3

www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60149673/

I then thew out 95% of the rest! just keeping some proper ones that still had lids.

Weaning dd and they have come into their own for all the picky bits.

snice · 13/09/2014 14:39

I love the idea of 'operational Tupperware'!
