Will bleach eliminate urine smell?

Mattress.

I am going to wash it, we get very hot weather here so I am able to do it thoroughly in the garden. While it's damp and raining I need a quick fix and bircarb isn't working, so I was wondering if spraying dilute bleach would help.

What do you think?

TIA

Personally I wouldn't do that because the bleach might have a detrimental effect on whatever the mattress is made of and it will make it smell pretty unpleasant to sleep on - even though I get it that the smell of urine is horrible. It could also irritate the skin of anyone who sleeps on the mattress in the future as I would imagine it will be very difficult to wash out.

Why not try a solution of biological washing powder or liquid in warm, not hot, water? The enzymes will help get rid of the smell. Or use one of the pet odour products containing enzymes like Mr Muscle or Simple Solution. Any of those three would be much nicer than bleach.

Thank you, I'll try the washing powder, haven't seen the other products where we are (forrin land).

I really wouldn't get a mattress too wet for the mould that can grow in them.

I wonder if a steamer would help?

White vinegar is good at getting rid of cat wee smells, so I assume it would do the same for other wees - it breaks it down very quickly, and the Eau De Chippy smell does fade pretty fast.

Gamer in the UK I wouldn't either but we get temps in the mid to high 40's with really intense sunlight, twice the radiation of the UK, so they do dry all the way through.

It's just that I can't do it now as we are a few weeks away from the intense heat of summer.

Ah you're lucky good luck Grin

Might be worth getting a protector when you've managed it though.. mattresses aren't cheap.

How to use bleach to get rid of urine smell.

Removing urine odors, whether caused by animals or small children, can seem like a difficult task, especially with so many products on the market made for household cleaning and odor removal. However, regular household bleach, when used correctly, is an effective and inexpensive solution for removing urine odors from recent accidents or lingering odors on certain kinds of floors (not carpet or hardwood). While bleach is safe to use in your home, always use it in a well-ventilated area, where pets and family members won't be exposed.

Instructions
1
Put a layer of newspaper on top of urine stains. Cover the newspaper with a layer of paper towels, followed by another single layer of newspaper.

2
Stand on top of the newspaper and paper towels to aid in the urine absorption process. After five minutes, discard the newspaper and paper towels.

3
Cover the area with a heavy layer of baking soda to further dry the area. Baking soda will also begin to remove the initial urine smell. Allow the baking soda to cover the area for 30 minutes. Sweep up the baking soda and discard it after 30 minutes has passed.

4
Make a 1:10 mixture of regular household bleach with distilled water in a clean bottle or container that has never contained any other chemicals. Some chemicals found in cleaning products can react unsafely with bleach.

5
Pour or spray the bleach onto the area affected by the urine. Leave the bleach and distilled water mixture on the area for 30 minutes, allowing as much ventilation as possible. Keep family members and pets out of the room.

6
Wipe up as much of the bleach as possible with paper towels and newspaper. Clean the floor with water, a mop and regular floor cleaner after wiping up the bleach. Allow 30 minutes of ventilation before re-entering the room.

Thanks Abbey will read that later.

I haven't actually bought bleach since DH used súper concentrated bleach with windows and doors closed and knocked his stupid self out. Have left bicarbonatos in situ and gone shopping as ran out of Washing powder.
