It's just a standard Breville one with really stupidly designed non-removable plates. DH broke the last one because he cleaned it under running water idiot . It was lovely and shiny and red but now it's all cheese-encrusted - getting it off the plates is relatively easy, so at least I can use it without worrying about food poisoning, but the cheese is round the edges, in the nooks and crannies, on the bits where the screws are, down the hinge at the back... It's really quite disgusting! Presumably at some stage it'll get so cheesed up it'll stop working.

I have a steam cleaner but I'm assuming I can't use it because the water will just condense and get into the electrics. I've tried scraping it out with a skewer accidentally nearly skewered myself too but this has limited effectiveness and is going to scratch it.

Any ideas?!

A scourer sponge and soapy water (don't make the sponge too wet). We got one with removable plates last time and they are much easier to clean

I get a thick dish cloth and soak it in washing up liquid, ring it out a bit and leave it sandwiched in the machine, it will (should) loosen the dirt enough for it to come off easily.

Thanks, will try both. The problem is I can't get to half of it!
