How to fragrance a house without using candles?

I really want to make the house smell more fragrant but don't want to use candles as I have a toddler and a lack of high shelving/fear of forgetting to put them out and fires.

I bought my Mother a diffuser with oils and a wick because id seen then in a shop and thought they smelt lovely. But if it's on when I go round it actually smells foul lol, really synthetic.

I want the house to smell of freshly laundered sheets and just mowed meadows. Anyone achieved this? (just to add I'm not trying to mask any smells, the house just smells of house, nothing terrible)

Some great ideas, I'll try making my own reed diffuser refill too. I've been using Wax Lyrical ones, I find them not too overpowering.

The most lovely smell is zoflora bouquet ( a concentrated disinfectant ), it's 59p in home bargains or around a pound in most supermarkets.
I use it neat on a cloth or some kitchen roll, wipe around the kitchen/bathroom or even the internal doors, the house smells amazing all day, even if I've been out all day the second I walk in it just smells fresh:)
I also use it to clean my floors, diluted of course.

Marking place as DH is bloody obsessed with the spray ones and various devices, I hate the things. I don't mind having a nice smell in the house but I don't see a particular need for it, but if I'm going to wean him off I need something good!

I am not averse to candles but he likes something that smells good when he walks in, so it doesn't work so well for candles. Plus he buys shitty "Glade" candles etc at £4 a pop instead of nice, expensive but long lasting ones.

Thanks for all these ideas, this thread's going into Watch!

I'm extremely intolerant of all the squirty aerosol artificial fresheners and always on the look out for new ideas... opening windows has seen me through this lovely summer but alas that is not going to be an option much longer Sad

There are some lovely looking diffusers on amazon, by Soto, that have coloured lights and remit fragrant stream. They aren't cheap at all but look like something I'd like for Christmas!

Yup zoflora here too. I'm sure I read here about boiling oranges or lemons on the hob was very effective

Following on from a pp, if you want to use tea tree oil, be careful if you have cats.
Some experts think inhalation as well as direct contact can be harmful.

I have diffusers but none work as well as this thing I got from lakeland - www.lakeland.co.uk/43341/Orange-and-Cinnamon-Scented-Clay-Heart

It's a bit of clay that you put essential oil onto, I've been meaning to try a diy version. I like the orange and cinnamon but it's a bit Christmassy for all year round.

Hollycopter years ago I had a similar clay circle that sat on top of/around a light bulb and you dropped essential oil onto it. That was great.
