Please tell me I'm not mad - egg in dishwasher issue.

Dear wise mumsnetters. Please help me settle an irksome argument and confirm I am not going mad.

Over time it has become obvious to me that whenever anyone puts an item in the dishwasher on which there are traces of runny egg (even if small), all the dishes will have an unpleasant and distinctive smell after they've been washed. This is particularly horrid on glasses and I have to then wash them by hand and or run them through the dishwasher again.

Now DH does not believe that egg is the cause of the smell, and even more annoyingly, my MIL who lives with us refuses to accept this.
Although I have on numerous occasions shown her the cause and effect she does not seem to see the link. She argues that the dishwasher being Miele and therefore very good is perfectly able to deal with traces of runny egg.
Therefore - something which should be very simple - e.g. wash all eggy items by hand becomes a constant annoyance as she refuses to do it.

I'm hoping that lots of you will have had the same experience and I will therefore be able to use this as irrefutable proof that even my unreasonable MIL will bow to.

Thank you!

Interesting......I always on ocasions have a strange smell in which is particularly bad with glasses which I have to hand wash to get rid. I could never figure it out but I do eat eggs a couple of times a week and I think what you are saying makes sense. I never thought of that. I do rinse my dishes before putting in dishwasher but maybe traces of egg are remaining.

I don't think you are going mad:)

I've never had Miele dishwasher but I always roughly rinse my dishes before putting in dishwasher.

Have you tried just putting only a load with egg tainted dishes and showing MIL and DH the result. Hope this makes sense? This would really annoy me to.

Just because a dishwasher is top of the range it doesn't mean it can do everything in my opinion. If it did it would have realised the dishes still smell and taken steps to remedy that. I hope I am making sense!

Cherrypi · 07/09/2014 16:42

I hate egg smelling glasses too. Your definitely not mad.

Rummikub · 07/09/2014 16:44

It's the egg. I've noticed the link before. Only cooked egg though.

rockybalboa · 07/09/2014 16:45

My DH and DC usually have soft boiled eggs for breakfast so our dishwasher is always full of runny egg residue. No eggy smells here.

Tinkerisdead · 07/09/2014 16:48

I know what you mean but i dont think its an eggy smell. More like a wet dog smell!

Tinkerisdead · 07/09/2014 16:48

Altho yes when theres egg in there

marceline · 07/09/2014 16:51

Yes, thank you Cherry and Rummikub! ab90, every time the smell has occurred lately I have checked - and she admitted that she had put eggy dishes in! Angry but she still doesn't believe me.

Now rocky - you are throwing me a bit of a curve ball. I thought my argument was unshakable. I wonder what you're doing differently.

Sorry, nope. I also have a Miele dishwasher, but have not found this to be the case. It doesn't shift cooked-on egg, but has no problems with runny or raw egg, or loose egg-scraps. There is generally no residue or taint whatsoever.

Whenever there is any residue or unpleasant smell, it has always been because the filter is blocked. The smell can come and go a bit, but it's definitely there, and cleaning the filter gets rid of it for another 6-12 months.

Have you tried cleaning the filter?

WineWineWine · 07/09/2014 16:57

Not something I have ever come across. We regularly eat eggs. I can't say I have ever noticed any difference between a wash with eggy dishes and one without. I would give your dishwasher a good clean and top up the salt and rinse aid!

17leftfeet · 07/09/2014 17:03

I put everything in the dishwasher without rinsing

No odd smells

ProfYaffle · 07/09/2014 17:03

We eat a log of eggs and I've never noticed this link.

WhispersOfWickedness · 07/09/2014 17:03

I've not had this problem either Confused
I give the filter an empty and quick rinse after every couple of cycles though, not sure if that makes a difference?

I've never noticed any sort of smell when washing egg stuff.

The problem is easily solved - if you want your dishwasher used in a particular manner and your dishes washed in a particular way, you do them yourself.

PrincessTheresaofLiechtenstein · 07/09/2014 17:17

No, never had this with egg and I am quite sensitive to weird smells. Am sure you are not mad though, there must be something causing it. Hope you solve the problem.

ChunkyPickle · 07/09/2014 17:18

I've never noticed it myself, however DP is a bugger for deciding that the glasses/plates don't smell right and either rinsing before we use them or running the dishwasher again, so I'm willing to believe there's something in it.

Not organised enough to check for egg... but perhaps I will in future.

blueberryboybait · 07/09/2014 17:23

We have a Miele and have never had an egg problem and I bake for a living so there are eggy bowls and dishes daily. I would check filters and sprayer arms for debris and see if a change in rinse aid/tablets works.

Clg199 · 07/09/2014 18:23

I get this too! It's definitely egg. Even if egg things are hand washed, then other things washed in the same water. DH can't smell it at all. It doesn't actually smell eggy, it smells musty to me, a bit like the feeling of when you get dust up your nose. It's v odd.

I have a friend who is the same - some people are far more sensitive than others apparently. They reckoned it was genetic but I'm not convinced by that.

PigletJohn · 07/09/2014 18:29

you could try a different detergent, see if it has a different effect. AIR egg is one of the things that some are better at than others.

The Which Best Buy tablets are Fairy Platinum, Lidl and Aldi. None of the others are as good, so try one/a different one of them.

ab90 · 07/09/2014 19:56

marceline

I use Finish all in one tablets, which ones do you use?
How old is your dishwasher, mine is very old. Must be more then 10 years as it came with the place I live in.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 07/09/2014 20:03

I used to get it happen and had the same arguments about it until the day I vomited in the dishwasher now they listen.

Weirdly the cheap fairy original powder also stops it

pengymum · 07/09/2014 20:40

YES! I have noticed the same! And I have a Miele too but it happened with previous Bosch & Zanussi ones and my sister's AEG.
My husband can't smell it but I can. Sometimes is filter needing a clean but always with eggy dishes. Rinsing with cold water usually works if is uncooked egg but not cooked.
Going to try the Fairy powder now. Grin

marceline · 07/09/2014 22:44

ab90 I use cheap Lidl tablets, perhaps I should invest in Fairy. The dishwasher is about 4-5 years old I think. I will give the filters a clean - still it only happens on certain washes.

Needs - wow, a bit drastic but I am willing to consider it!

Still I am so glad to hear that I am not the only person experiencing this strange phenomenon. I have considered that it may be partly to do with my overly sensitive sense of smell - I often get Hmm looks when I say something smells...
