You need to use washing machine descaler/cleaner as well as do regular 90 ° maintenance washes right?

Thank you.

Just to confirm this is a question. The "right?" was cut off the end of the displated title. Do you need to do 90° service washes as well as use descaler/cleaner? Are both types of clean needed?

Displayed not displated

Sorry maintenance washes not service washes.

I have never done a 90 degree wash in my life.

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2014 19:49

Just wondering how best to prolong the life of my washing machine

I have soft water so have never had to descale anything in my life.

A repair man once told me using powder over liquid would prolong my machine and if I did use liquid to do regular 90 washes as it forms a gunk in the pipes.

ilovepowerhoop · 11/08/2014 19:57

soda crystals can be used on the maintenance wash to help flush out grease/dirt, etc.

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2014 20:14

Thanks. We have hard water. I do use powder rather than liquid detergent most of the time

what does it say in the manual? My old machine said to use some of your usual detergent but my new one says no need to use anything but that if you did to use only 10% of the recommended dose of the cleaner.

I would check what it says for your particular machine

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2014 22:07

Just had a look. It says to descale the appliance according to the descaler manufacturer's instructions but that this should not be necessary if the correct dosage of detergent is used. Nothing about a maintenance wash. It was on mumsnet I read about doing a regular 90 degree wash. Maybe that and descaling is not necessary after all then. Cheers

My plumber told me the exact opposite Lucked! Do 90deg washes or use liquid because powder clogs the pipes! Hmm

NormHonal · 11/08/2014 22:18

OP, have you had a recent visit from a maintenance engineer from a certain German brand of machine?

We had one recently and he advocated the 90 degree maintenance cycles once a month, and then went into sales patter about the own-brand descaler.

I thought the whole thing was a sales trick, but then he dropped the patter and said straight-up "look, selling this stuff isn't my job, but Limescale really does kill machines and it's worth using Calgon or something like it".

crazykat · 11/08/2014 22:30

My washing machine says to do an empty 90 degree wash once a month to clean the machine. I read on here to put a pint of white vinegar in the drum and it definitely cleans it as I have to do an extra rinse to get rid of all the stuff that gets dislodged.

I was also told by a plummer to put the powder in the drum with the clothes instead of the drawer as it stops the powder clogging up the pipe from the drawer to the drum.

HibiscusIsland · 11/08/2014 23:53

No, I've not had a visit from a maintenance engineer. Might carry on with the 90 degree maintenance washes and also descale then having read the other replies. I guess it won't do any harm and might prolong the life of the machine and save on engineer visits.

Didn't know that about putting powder in the drum with the clothes

I occasionally use this if I see it on offer as well as doing maintenance washes at 90c

i don't know if it makes any difference though. Probably not Grin

I use a mixture of liquid and powder and do a regular maintenance wash.
We moved the washing machine recently and had a look at the drain pipe, it was thick with slimy sludge and took while to clean with a long windy drain cleaner brush.
