Stinky shirts

My son is staying with me (between properties......long story).

I've just washed 5 of his work shirts, jolly good ones from Charles Tyrwhitt, the cotton sort that are non iron, bio powder @ 40*...............

...........And now they look lovely but do the underarms STINK? They stink to high heaven of sweat.......probably the same as before I washed them, but I didn't get that close!

What to do?

I know he wears, what they now call a 48 hr anti perspirant, works in air conditioned office............

Ooh, any one got any help out there?

I have to wash DH's shirts at a minimum of 60 degrees to get rid of stinky armpits.

Reluctant Camper, thanks for reply.

Even if instructions say 40?

Try rubbing them with vinegar before you wash them, the acidity kills the stink-causing bacteria as hot washing would.

You need a good bit of vinegar and be vigorous rubbing them, and the smell will be washed away.

if they're 100% cotton they should survive a hot wash - I've done some at 90 before . use lots of bio powder for whites - nothing else shifts bodily fluids properly - and an extra rinse. then line dry in direct sun.

Try some sports wash washing liquid - I use HALO, gets all the sweaty smell out of sports gear. It's about £4 a bottle.

My husband had the same brand of shirts, 60 degree minimum, white vinegar sprayed under the arm pits and a good scoop of washing soda, works like a charm!

Yy to white vinegar sprayed onto the underarms plus a cool rinse before washing to rinse the whiff out without setting. Capful of vinegar in the softener drawer too

You could also try adding a bit of Zoflora to the wash...

Chas Tyrwhitt mail-order shirts are good. If they are marked pure cotton but say 40C wash, they may have synthetic thread or linings in the collar, which may pucker at the seams or go bumpy when hot-washed.

If he is smelly and sweaty he might consider wearing white cotton t-shirts underneath. They absorb sweat and can be hot-washed. They are also much cheaper than a spoiled good shirt.
