Cleaning white UPVC windows.

The out side of my white UPVC window frames are grotty looking, stained almost like tobacco stains, but on the outside.

Don't know what has caused it. House is wooden and painted with wood preserver, so perhaps drips have been wiped off badly but it looks to uniform for that. Its not like the grey dusty muck from the road, quite road anyway.

bleach?

Skribble · 16/09/2006 21:13

I haven't actually tried bleach or anything for that matter, the windows are lucky to get done, never mind the frames. Thought I would get advice on the best way to tackle it before I started climbing ladders and faffing about.

go to b&q in the section where they sell the windows to fit yourself not to the poncey part of the store and ask for acetone. put on a flannel and wipe.

acetone is nail varnish remover too try that? if you don't want to climb ladders get a window cleaner

Skribble · 16/09/2006 21:16

Acetone, OK sounds interesting, I might try a bit with bleach and see if not I will try acetone.

Had a window cleaner who was pretty rubbish and didn't do the frames anyway. I didn't like listening to him shouting and swearing at his bored little girl who had to follow him about, then he came to the door for payment and told me my windows were f**king manky. Durr!!! thats why I got A WINDOW CLEANER TO DO THEM.

Ours had that sort of colouring when there was alot of pollen from the trees down our street and the fact that I never got round to doing them for weeks, dh did it in the end with a sponge and warm water and washing up liquid, very frothy! I wouldn't dare use anything too strong like bleachincase it damaged the surface.

southeastastra · 16/09/2006 21:22

oh dear get a new window cleaner!

Skribble · 16/09/2006 21:22

Might be pollen as it is much worse at the front where there are trees a lot closer.

acetone is what the double glazing fitter used when he fitted our door. it turns out i was his dd's teacher for a year. she was an excellent girl and he seemed a really nice dad.

You can buy UPVC cleaner in Homebase which worked a treat on my filthy windows!

Acetone made no difference, its like its been done on purpose, the stain is so even.
