Here we go again - another month for us to tackle our clutter and get on top of our housework!

If you’re struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun), you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.
  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Yes, it really does, DizzyK Smile. Feel so pleased with myself! I managed a short doze of about 20 minutes, but kept being disturbed by boys, DH and kittens, so gave up. Probably just as well because I've got loads to do.

Bet you feel great toffee ! Such a kick getting rid of stuff! DH wants to spend a few hours sorting out the baby room/current office tomorrow. Today was a bit of a write off as we were out at DN's birthday party from 11 till 2 and exhausted when we got home.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 23/08/2014 19:33

Toffee well done. And here I was just pleased that there was ice cream in the grocery shop delivered today. You are MUCH more motivated than me today. Grin

ToffeeWhirl · 23/08/2014 22:36

Thanks, Alice and Engels. I have more to report - have been on fire today!

ta da

Complete spring clean of DS1's bedroom - took hours and involved decluttering under his bed , decluttering the room, wiping surfaces and a lot of hoovering
Room rescue of DS2's bedroom, which I only tidied up a few days ago and now it's a mess again Angry
Put two bags of rubbish out
Fed kittens
Played with kittens

Was going to make veggie lasagne tonight for our guests tomorrow, but instead I'm going to weigh out the ingredients, then make it in the morning. I need to sleep.

Here are the links before I pass out:

Babystep Number 23: plan your afternoon routine. I realise I posted Babystep 24 (swish and swipe) yesterday (no idea how I did that), but that should have been today's babystep, so I'm posting yesterday's today.

Sunday's focus is here.

Sunday's flight plan is here.

Am going to pass out now. Night all.

What a productive weekend Toffee - well done! Was it a car boot sale? I'd like to do one but DH refuses point blank in case people try and haggle, he's rubbish at that sort of thing and I'd rather not do it by myself, not first time anyway.

Arrived safely late afternoon and all settled in now, lovely sunny evening but chilly. The DCs were really well behaved on our journey (we break the journey at a lovely nature reserve which the DCs love) but went a bit mad when we got here, however all was resolved by the time we'd eaten and we've had a nice evening.

ToffeeWhirl · 24/08/2014 08:00

WhoKnows - DH feels the same way about car boot sales and, having read a bit about them on MN, I'm inclined to agree: tales of sellers buying your goods cheaply, then selling them on at profit; people stealing your stuff whilst you're busy unpacking; haggling over prices; and not making any or much profit at the end of the day. No thanks.

We were selling at a local nature reserve and it was set up to raise money for them, so we paid £10 to them for the pitch. It was all very quiet and polite, mainly families selling unwanted toys and clutter, like us. Perfect! DS2 thinks we've made lots of money, but we haven't really because of the fee. I think we might have made a tenner. But we had a lovely day, DS2 loved every minute and we got rid of loads of stuff and made other people happier into the bargain (it was really nice seeing mums happy to save money on next year's school uniform and children enjoying DS2's bags of unwanted small toys for 20p).

Plus DS2 had to practise giving change, which is one of the things he was stuck on on ConquerMaths, so it was educational too!

Glad to hear you're all settled in in Scotland now. I hope you have a really lovely holiday up there.

Had eight hours' sleep last night, so am feeling better this morning Smile.

WhoKnow glad you've made it there safely. Have a lovely time!!

Toffee yes, just getting rid of the clutter makes it worth it, doesn't it?

Today is "find a place for things" day. I am decluttering the dining room still (emptied out the wooden cabinet and sideboard) and now I'm playing a game of "keep, give away, rubbish" with it all.

coffeeandcream · 24/08/2014 20:11

Sniggering childishly at Toffee polishing knobs Grin

We've had a weekend visiting castles with medieval battle reenactments! Had a great time but DS had a melt down from tiredness and is now refusing to sleep....

We have torrential rain Forecast for tomorrow so lots of decluttering planned. I've also booked a table at our local NCT nearly new sale for a few weeks time so might try to sort and price up stuff tomorrow too.

ToffeeWhirl · 24/08/2014 23:18

Am very particular about polished knobs here at Toffee Towers, coffee Grin.

Alice - well done on your decluttering.

coffee - sounds like a busy and fun weekend. Good to hear you are also planning a sale.

Managed to get through my 'to do' list before our visitors arrived at midday. We had a really enjoyable day with them - lovely meal with wine, followed by a walk through countryside. A friend dropped round unexpectedly after they'd gone, so I haven't had a chance to post the links before now.

Tomorrow's links:

Babystep Number 25: read Flylady's testimonial on how she started developing her routines one habit at a time.

Monday means it's weekly home blessing hour.

This week we are in Zone 5: the living room. Our mission tomorrow is to go sofa and chair diving. Check under the cushions and backs of chairs and get rid of all the rubbish. The sneak peak for the week is here.

Monday's flight plan is here.

Night all.

Yawn. Need coffee..... I can't believe I've been up for this long without it... (I usually am up by 5, coffee before 6)

ta da
ordered prescriptions online
tidied living room
bath for each boy (they had a shower last night as usual, however, they've discovered a few of their toys are okay in the water, so of course insisted they were "grubby" and needed a bath this morning as well Hmm)

to do
put some clothes away
look through knitting patterns, find good "winter hat" pattern
have friend coming over for coffee this afternoon so will do a quick tidy overall
continue to "find a home" for things in the dining room - making good progress!!

GoingGoingGoth · 25/08/2014 10:30

Morning, non-stealth boast alert....

The author talk/book signing on Saturday was brilliant and DD got an extra prize as she was one of the top 10 readers in Glasgow! So she had to go on stage and get her photo taken etc. Very proud of her.

Yesterday was also good as we went to the Country Fair at Pollok Park. If you get 5 minutes YouTube the Drakes of Hazard, it's border collies herding Indian Running Ducks, very funny.

I'm just about to head off and met some MNers at the Burrell for a knit (and cake) but I've been quite productive already

Done
Dd to school (no bank holiday here)
Laundry out
Beds made
Litter tray cleaned
S&S
Vacuum most of flat (DH has volunteered to do lounge)
Washing up
FB, Twitter & MN with Brew

Hope you all have a lovely day, heading off on my Bike now Grin

GoingGoingGoth · 25/08/2014 10:32

thank god for preview I originally put 'DH has volunteered to do lunge'

KiaOraOAotearoa · 25/08/2014 11:24

Hello lovely ladies. Been away but I am ready to jump back on the wagon :)

Sootball · 25/08/2014 12:10

Will be back the 5th September. Utterly given up on flying until the end of the month as we are now in complete chaos.

Have been reading the Thread But can't keep up with posting and firefighting approach is ensuring that we are at least wearing clean clothes and fed. Although my meal plan strategy which has worked for years has also fallen by the wayside so spending a fortune on one off meals

Brb!

ToffeeWhirl · 25/08/2014 12:27

Well done to MiniGoth Smile.

Welcome back, Kia.

Soot - sounds like a good plan. Sorry it's all feeling so chaotic. See you in Sept.

Morning, Alice. Hope coffee did the trick.

ta da

Up and dressed by 8 Shock (thanks to good night's sleep again)
B/fasts
Fed kitties
Didn't need to unload d/w because did it last night
Put laundry on
Massive tidy up and clear out of our bedroom
Binned lots of stuff from our bedroom
Hoovered our floor (could actually see it!)
Collected dirty plates and glasses from various bedrooms and loaded d/w
Put wet clothes on radiators to dry (yes, we have the heating on today - it's chilly here)

Astonishingly, we now have a reasonably tidy house. Am really enjoying decluttering and determined to get DH to drive us to the dump and get rid of loads more asap. And I have my new shredder scissors at the ready for shredding boxes of papers.

to do

make tomato and cheese pastry swirls with DS2 for lunch
make chicken casserole and put in slow cooker for dinner
catch up with open university work

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 25/08/2014 18:44

Toffee me too... I keep a good flyswatter nearby on rainy days Grin

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 25/08/2014 18:46

I was OUT of coffee... traumatised by it, thank you very much!! Shock

But.... thankfully I found some in the back of the cupboard to use in the cafetiere. Bliss!! Grin Literally saved my life!

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 25/08/2014 18:47

I didn't even look at the date on the package. I don't want to know - because I'm still going to drink it. Grin It's coffee... that's all that matters.

ToffeeWhirl · 25/08/2014 23:54

A flyswatter wouldn't have been big enough for this monster, Alice. Have never seen one as big as that in this house. I keep worrying that it will crawl back in again (I would probably hear its enormous feet pounding across the floor Shock).

Glad you found coffee in the end.

Posting the links and going straight to bed in my relatively tidy bedroom (for once). Hope everyone had a good Bank Holiday Monday. I know some of you are on holiday and the rest of you must have been busy - the thread was so quiet today.

Babystep Number 26: Flylady explains why it takes a month to establish a new habit and how important it is not to give up if you fall off the Flylady wagon.

Tuesday is our day to plan and play.

We are in Zone 5: the Living Room this week: tomorrow's mission is to spend just five minutes dusting in that room. Check the sneak peak for the week here.

The flight plan for Tuesday is here.

Night all.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 26/08/2014 07:14

hahahahaahhahaa I had one of those last autumn, if you'll recall. I came on here in the middle of the night moaning that it went under a chair and wouldn't come out. Never did find it - I imagine it found it's way outside again. But that nasty thing should have been paying RENT dammit!

MercuryRising · 26/08/2014 07:33

Hello all. I have fallen off the flylady wagon againSad and with just one week until returning to school I need to climb back on quickly so today will be all about the power of 3.

So first 3:
Make beds
Breakfast/ wash up
Get dressed - no lazing around today!!

MercuryRising · 26/08/2014 08:37

Next power of 3:
Change kitchen bin
Hang out washing and reload wm
Dry up and wipe kitchen sides

MercuryRising · 26/08/2014 09:19

Power of 3 number 3:
Dust living room
Hoover downstairs
Sort laundry

This seems to be really working - I have done more in the last hour than I have for a week!
